Tom watched Ariana shift back into her human form and slowly raised a sign with a giant question mark on it.
Wait, this couldn't be right. A controllable Obscurus? Was that even possible?
If he'd had any hand in creating the thing, he could've understood the change. But this Obscurus had appeared completely on its own.
The only possible link was that Ariana had lost it when she thought he'd died. But did that actually make sense?
He had no idea. None of it added up.
Ron, who knew exactly how terrifying an Obscurus could be, stared in open disbelief.
A full Obscurial who could control her Obscurus completely? That wasn't—
Then he glanced at Tom and suddenly relaxed. When Tom was involved, the impossible always started to feel perfectly normal.
"Oh, kids! You all right? I followed the unicorn's blood trail and saw it looped right back around—you should—wait, is that the unicorn? Why does it look like that now?!
And what the heck is that green thing stuck in the ground over there? Why does it feel so dangerous?"
Hagrid had finally caught up. He stared at the unicorn lying on the ground, wrapped tight like a mummy, and the glowing green Killing Curse planted on top of Tom's little grave. His face went blank with confusion.
The group traded quick glances. They left out Ariana's Obscurus episode for now and told Hagrid everything else that had just happened.
"Wait—you're saying the one behind all this is Professor Quirrell? No, the face on the back of Quirrell's head? How is that possible?"
Hagrid's eyes bulged. That was Professor Quirrell—the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher Dumbledore himself had chosen! How could he possibly—
Just like how he'd trusted Snape in the original story, Hagrid refused to believe the man Dumbledore picked could be a dark wizard.
But Tom's group's story, plus the unicorn—who had wriggled free of its bandages and was now nodding tearfully—proved it was all true.
The one hunting unicorns was Quirrell. The one who'd tried to kill Harry and the rest was him too. And even though he was supposed to be helping protect the Sorcerer's Stone, he had betrayed Dumbledore and was trying to steal it.
Remembering he'd seen Quirrell at the Leaky Cauldron before term started, Hagrid couldn't help wondering if the Gringotts break-in had been his doing as well.
"Oh, well… Quirrell, or rather the master on the back of his head. Merlin's beard, why would anyone take orders from a face growing out of the back of someone's skull!"
Hagrid scratched his already messy hair in frustration. "They wanted to use unicorn blood—your blood—to heal their injuries, right?"
The unicorn nodded hard.
"But I still don't get it. When I saw Quirrell with Dumbledore earlier, he seemed perfectly normal. How did he end up so badly hurt inside the school?"
"Maybe Fluffy?"
"No way. Even though I told Fluffy to guard the place, he could only stop one professor at most. If that professor could break into Gringotts, there's no chance Fluffy could've stopped him either."
Hagrid looked puzzled. If Quirrell had the power to break into Gringotts, why would Fluffy be able to injure him?
[Maybe because of this?]
Tom held up his sign. He'd drawn a vivid picture of the face on the back of Quirrell's head.
[This is the face on the back of Quirrell's head. Maybe the reason he needs the unicorn has something to do with this guy?]
Tom didn't remember every detail, but he vaguely recalled that pretty much every major event during Harry's school years had been connected to Voldemort.
He only remembered Voldemort as that noseless freak, though. He couldn't recall the exact face, and since the one on Quirrell had a nose, he hadn't made the connection.
But the second Hagrid saw the drawing, his eyes bulged and the lantern slipped from his fingers. "Merlin's beard—You-Know-Who?! How is that possible? No, you must be mistaken! He's dead—he can't come back!"
"You-Know-Who?!"
Ron froze solid. He thought they'd been dealing with a professor. Now they were telling him it was You-Know-Who—the Dark Lord himself?!
His vision swam. He nearly passed out.
Hannah didn't look much better. They'd all grown up hearing stories about Voldemort, but seeing his face up close was something else entirely.
"No, Hagrid. That's him. He looks exactly like that."
Harry was shaken too, but unlike the others, he stayed relatively calm. He hadn't grown up being scared with You-Know-Who's name.
"No—this is bad. We have to tell Dumbledore right now! I'm going— Wait, where are Draco and Hermione?"
Only then did Hagrid notice two people were missing.
"They went back to the castle. Oh right—the signal!"
Ron pulled himself together enough to raise his wand and fire a bright red spark into the sky.
"That should do it. They'll tell the headmaster soon. He'll be here any minute."
He forced his shaky legs to stay steady. "Once Dumbledore knows You-Know-Who's back, Quirrell's plan is finished—"
"No!"
Before Ron could finish, Harry suddenly realized something and cut him off. "We thought to tell the headmaster—so did Quirrell! He knows his time is running out. Once we alert Dumbledore, none of his plans will work!"
"What do you mean?"
Ron still wasn't following, so Ariana explained, "It means Quirrell—or rather, Voldemort on him—knows we'll report everything that happened tonight to the headmaster.
No matter how strong he used to be, right now he's just a fragment of a soul clinging to Quirrell. Dumbledore can definitely stop him.
So he'll take this chance. While Hermione and Malfoy are telling Dumbledore—before he finds out—he'll rush straight for the Sorcerer's Stone and get out of Hogwarts.
In other words, right now he's probably—no, he's definitely in that corridor on the fourth floor."
"But Fluffy stopped him last time. He shouldn't be able to get past—"
"No,"
Even Hagrid finally understood everything. His face fell. "I told someone about Fluffy's weakness—the person who gave me the dragon egg."
