Chapter 10 - chapter 11

MACHARA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Chapter 11

At Machara Primary, punishments were ranked like exam subjects. Lower classes got "soft life" duties — sweeping or cleaning flowerbeds — but Classes 6 to 8 faced military-grade torture. The most feared was the Walk of Shame, crawling on your knees over rough ground full of stones and hidden thorns. Watching them from a distance, we younger kids thought it was fun… until we grew up and joined the battlefield.

Another horror was the "kneel down, hands up" punishment. It started easy but after 15 minutes, arms shook like old aerials trying to catch KBC signal. Some pupils even began whispering to ancestors for strength. Knees were left wounded, uniforms torn, pride gone.

When parents finally saw the damage, they rioted like villagers in a Nigerian movie. One mother tied her leso around her waist and declared, "Leo hatutoki hapa bila majibu!" The headteacher panicked and vanished—rumor says he started a poultry business elsewhere.

The new headteacher replaced canes with cleaning duties. The pain ended, but the scars on the knees of Class 8 survivors still shine proudly—proof of surviving Machara's punishment era.
