Chapter 1 - Day One

Survival Log for this unknown world I have ended up in. For the record my Earth name is Ellery Kingston. My ID number is 888-3 for all Expeditionary Forces of Earth. As of July 18 of 2096 I have successfully entered a new world. When the higher ups promoted me to explorer I never expected to do much. 93% of explorers never return home or even report back. As per the rules of the EFE I am writing daily logs based on my experiences and observations in this new world. With the introduction to my logs done I shall start.

I arrived in this world and immediately noticed I am in a cold region or it is winter. The area is mountainous and heavily forested. In my starting location I cannot identify any known civilization traces. As per explorer rules I have no electronic technology. With a compass I begin navigating and eventually find a river. Studies indicate that many civilizations start near a clean water source.

I followed the river till I found a small wooden cabin with an old overgrown path following the river. I attempted to identify if anyone was inside and upon finding no one I enter. The door wielded a heavy metal lock but my machete fit inside without much force. I lifted the lock and entered to find the place covered in dust and empty spider webs.

I searched the cabin but only found a single dagger like blade and old clothes with animal furs. Unfortunately when I entered this world I was not prepared for a cold climate so I was lucky to find this clothing. I donned some of the lose fur clothing and continued my search. Under the fur bed I found a small cylindrical wooden container with unidentified gold coins. I took the coins and their container with me and continued down the path. My heavy durasteel alloy machete proves unmatched in this world much like on earth.

Eventually I find myself on a small, old cobbled road. I continue down the road and eventually find a sign post. Two signs at a split indicate what are presumably towns. I take the one going left as it goes down hill into a valley and likely follows alongside the river I had left behind on the path. The words on the sign look strange, like a mix of old Norse runes and English.

I write down the words on a separate page and resume traveling. I follow the road down till I get to the river and find another cabin near a bridge crossing the river. This road is obviously much more travelled as it is also in much better condition than the previous roads. I make my way towards the cabin which seems to be run down and raided. The door is ajar and I enter with my blade ready.

Inside is two beds, a dresser, a dining table and chairs, a shelf with rotten food and a barrel with rotten food hanging above it. I don't find much inside except for a wooden longbow and some arrows. Perhaps this place was less a cabin and more a house as it is bigger and its thatched roof was in much better condition than that of the first building I found.

I continued down the road till I spotted humanoids. I find that they are standing at a path up the mountain leading above the house is just been in. I take cover in the woods and watch them. They appear human enough but seem incredibly tribal and a little crazy. As I get closer I observe them more carefully. Two appear to be normal human tribesmen with furs and primitive weapons. The third and largest seems to be the leader and is carrying brutal and ineffective looking hand axes.

He looks incredibly strange and has less furs than his companions. He wears a helmet of a goats skull and has a strange bone structure seemingly attached to his chest above his heart. As I grab an arrow from my quiver and put it on my bow I step out in hopes of communicating with them. However I quickly deem communication with them impossible as they charge me with rage filled yells. I put an arrow into the chest of a normal one and he drops. The second catches one with his leg and is crippled. The leader continues charging and I quickly loose a third arrow and it slams into his chest.

Unlike his fellows he doesn't even flinch. I drop my bow and pull my blade from my hip. His axes carve through the air as I swing my blade to meet them. The blades slam into my but only their momentum and weight hit me as the handles are separated by my blade. I stab forward as I slice through his axes. My blade catches his eye and cuts through his socket straight to his ear. I pull back from my stab as he lunges and I cut sideways. My blade goes into his chest from shoulder to the arrow I'd landed under his pectoral. I feel the visceral blow cut cleanly through bone and muscle like it's simply a cloth dummy. He topples onto me his hands groping for my throat in a last ditch attempt to end me.

I threw him off and shed my furs as my furs absorb his blood. I stand above him with only my basic explorer armorweave suit. I pluck my arrows from him and the others and clean them and my machete in the river. I search them all but only the leader has anything. The first thing I found was a shiny pinkish purple crystalline stone. The second was a weird wavy dagger pitch black in color. The third is his 'heart', a small root knot with glowing green veins. The bone cage thing over his obviously magic heart was diced open by my killing blow so it was easy, if nasty, to pick out.

I left the corpses where they fell and continued down the road. Night fell and I settled just past some rapids I the river, inside a small overhang of stone. I bunched up some bushes and planted sharp stick pointing outward. I removed my issued sleeping bag and go to sleep.

Thus concludes my day one survival log for this world.

Note for future explorers reading this: always bring explorer level climate gear. Conditions of the world you may enter could be vastly different from expected. Explorer armorweave suit is functional and versatile but does not cover everything you could encounter.

PS: recommend EFE to create environmental adaptation for explorer suits. The cold is very annoying.
