A strange dream. A ruined outfit. A city on edge. Cybella didn't expect her final year to begin with something many questions... or danger.

Now, into the story...

It was cold.

The air felt too still, and there was a faint hum everywhere - as if the walls themselves were breathing. Cybella could barely open her eyes, but through the blur, she saw bright lights and strange machines surrounding her. Tall figures in white coats moved between blinking monitors and glass chambers. Their mouths moved like they were speaking, but everything was silent, like she was underwater.

Her fingers twitched.

One of the people turned and looked straight at her.

Her heart kicked in her chest.

Then -

BZZZT! BZZZT!

The alarm on her nightstand blared like it wanted to shake the walls apart. Cybella's eyes shot open, the dream already fading as she smacked the alarm off and let out a groan.

Just a dream... right?

Without missing a beat, she grabbed her music remote and blasted her favourite playlist. The room filled with pounding bass and catchy vocals as she sang loudly - and very badly - hopping around like a maniac.

In front of her glowing mirror - a sleek, glass panel known as the RefleX - clothing suggestions blinked into place. The RefleX was the best part of her room. You didn't tap or scroll - you just swiped left to reject or right to accept.

Swipe left. Ugh.

Swipe left. Too boring.

Swipe left. Ew, what even is that?

Finally, she found the one - a brown and pink outfit she liked. It's not trendy, not loud, just... her.

She swiped right.

Still dancing to the music, she darted into the bathroom. The lavender-scented steam filled the air as she sang off-key in the shower, totally unapologetic.

Just as she stepped out, wrapped in a towel, a loud knock came at her door.

"Cybella!" Emma's voice yelled. "Can you turn it down?! I can hear your music through the walls!"

Cybella shouted back, "Love you too!" and cheekily turned the volume up by one notch.

Dressed and energized, she floated down the stairs. Not literally - but close, with how fast her boots hit the steps.

The living room was chaos.

Lily, the youngest, was zooming around with her tiny hover-drone, shrieking with laughter. At six years old, Lily had short, curly brown hair that bounced as she zipped around, her wide, innocent eyes sparkling with mischief. She was wearing a bright orange hoodie that seemed a little too big for her tiny frame, but she wore it with confidence.

Vanessa, the oldest, was chopping vegetables in the kitchen, trying not to lose her patience. Vanessa was tall, with long, straight black hair and sharp features that made her look older than her 22 years. She had a natural elegance but could easily switch to teasing mode, especially when it came to her little sister.

Emma was lounging on the couch, completely absorbed in her phone, one earbud in. Emma, 16 , had medium-length dark hair, always pulled into a messy bun, and her eyes were a dark hazel that could shift between amusement and annoyance in an instant. Her clothes always matched her relaxed attitude - baggy and comfortable, with an almost sarcastic sense of style.

Their dad, as usual, sat on the couch with a mug of tea, glued to the morning news. He was tall with graying hair and a beard, his eyes a warm brown, reflecting the deep focus he often had on whatever troubled him in the world. His thick glasses rested on his nose, a faint frown creasing his forehead as he stared at the screen.

"I can't believe this!" he snapped, pointing at the screen. "The police can't find one creature?! Property is being destroyed across the city, and they have no leads!"

On the TV, the news anchor's voice continued:

"Due to the failure of local law enforcement, the government has handed the investigation to an elite private agency. Officials say they trust this group completely to capture whatever is responsible. Details remain classified."

Emma finally looked up. "Well, it's not like the thing's killing anyone. It's just some walls and buildings. Doesn't seem that bad."

The whole room went silent.

Their dad gave her a long, cold stare.

Emma looked away. "Sorry," she mumbled.

Cybella laughed and strolled into the kitchen.

Vanessa took one look at her and dramatically dropped her jaw. "That's what you're wearing on your first day of senior year?"

Cybella raised an eyebrow. "Yup. And I like it. Not going to a runway show."

"Pink and brown? Girl, that's like chocolate and bubblegum. No one wants that."

"Can you two just not today?" their mom sighed, wiping her hands on a towel. She was shorter than Cybella, with soft, dark curls and light brown skin. Her smile could light up a room, but right now, her expression was filled with worry as she glanced at the clock. "Cybella, please wear something else. It's your final year in high school - you want to make a good first impression."

Vanessa smirked. "Even Mom agrees. Told you!"

Cybella rolled her eyes, but let Vanessa hand her a new outfit - a sleek navy top with silver-lined jeans and a light jacket that shimmered just a little in the light.

"You better be glad I'm feeling lazy," she said, changing right there while everyone groaned and turned away.

Once ready, she grabbed her ride from the garage: her VoltCruze - a hoverboard-like device shaped like a flattened oval with glowing blue strips around the edges. She tapped her SyncWatch, and the VoltCruze floated gently under her feet, humming softly.

With one strong kick, she soared down the street, her music still in her ears, the wind pulling her hair behind her.

Senior year had officially begun.
