Chapter 20 - ✨ CHAPTER TWENTY — THE RESCUE

The tower looms larger with every step. Shadows twist unnaturally around the walls, responding to Varek's presence. I clutch the notebook tightly, feeling its pulse like a heartbeat. Every word I write, every creation I make, carries both hope and danger.

"We're almost there," I whisper to Lorean, who squeezes my hand tightly. My parents follow cautiously, trusting me despite the fear etched in their eyes.

The shadow being moves ahead, scouting the halls, neutralizing minor threats and creating small diversions. Its red eyes glint faintly in the crimson light of Varek's world. It is our silent guardian, but I know it cannot face Varek directly.

We reach the chamber where Mom and Dad are held. The chains glow faintly with magic, pulsing with Varek's control. I glance at the notebook, pencil ready, mind racing.

A key of silver light appears in my hand, able to unlock any magical restraint without harming the prisoners.

The words shimmer and form the key, delicate but powerful. I step forward, hands shaking, and unlock the chains. Mom and Dad collapse into my arms, exhausted but alive.

"Wren… Lorean…" Mom whispers, tears streaming down her face. "You found us…"

"I told you we would," I say, hugging them tightly. But my joy is tempered by the awareness of Varek's presence.

A sudden roar echoes through the tower. Varek steps into the chamber, eyes blazing, dark energy twisting around him.

"You think you can take them from me?" he hisses, voice like grinding stone. "This universe bends to my will! And you… you dare defy me?"

The shadow being moves forward, bristling with energy, intercepting his first strike. But Varek is strong, his magic bending reality itself. The ground shakes, the walls ripple, and I feel the notebook pulsing urgently in my hands.

"We have to move," I whisper. "Now!"

I write quickly, deliberately:

Illusions and protective barriers obscure our path, creating a corridor of safe passage out of the tower.

The magic pulses through the chamber. Shadows twist and shimmer, forming walls that block Varek's view and shield us from his attacks. The floor shifts, creating a hidden path that leads to the side exit.

We run, hearts pounding, shadows of the tower twisting around us, Varek's furious roars echoing behind.

As we near the exit, I glance at the notebook. I realize something terrifying: the other book—Varek's creation—is tied to ours in ways I hadn't fully understood. The moment I rescued my parents, the connection between the two books grew stronger.

Varek's power is amplified, his control over reality more unstable—but also more dangerous.

"We have to get out of here," I whisper. "Before he uses the connection to trap us all."

We sprint through the corridor, guided by the glowing markers I've created. The shadow moves silently beside us, neutralizing minor threats, keeping Varek at bay as best it can.

Finally, we reach a portal, shimmering faintly at the edge of the tower.

"Through here!" I shout.

We leap together, the portal swallowing us, and the world shifts around us. Crimson skies and twisted towers vanish, replaced by the familiar glow of the forest.

We collapse to the ground, breathless but alive. Mom and Dad hug us tightly, tears of relief streaming down their faces. Lorean clings to me, her small body shaking with exhaustion.

I clutch the notebook, heart pounding. The battle is not over. Varek knows we've escaped. He knows we are stronger. And now, with the connection between the books, the stakes are higher than ever.

But for the first time, I allow myself a small moment of triumph.

"We did it," I whisper. "We're together. And we're alive."

Mom smiles weakly. "Thanks to you, Wren. You saved us."

I nod, feeling the weight of the notebook in my hands. It is alive, powerful, dangerous—but also our greatest hope.

And I know, with a shiver of anticipation and fear, that the real battle—the final confrontation with Varek and the secrets of the books—still lies ahead.
