Chapter 3 - Spider-Man Vs The Sinister…Five?

[Would you like to disable all cameras in the vicinity?]

'Yes!'

I hurriedly said. My scoop would be all the more valuable if I was the only one to have proof of the event.

Just as I thought this, Spiderman leapt forward, leaping onto Electro before the latter could let out another blast, tackling him to another building as the other followed.

'Crap, I gotta get as much as possible!'

Without even thinking, I leapt off the building I was on, the camera still on my shoulder and the eyepiece still fixed to my eye.

Despite just having gotten these abilities, the natural human instinct that would come with jumping off a roof didn't come, my mind too preoccupied with the fight I tried to catch every second of.

And it seemed that it didn't matter considering I hit the ground hard, unaffected as I darted toward an alley between the bank and the building they were on, leaping into the air as I jumped off the wall, onto the other, continuing this between the two walls until I scaled the building, using the fire escape to cover the last bit of distance, leaping for the light at the top with a grin, stabilizing my camera for the fight I could hear happening.

But as I did…my grin faded as I witnessed a giant green scaled lizard shooting toward me back first.

'Shit!'

-BOOM

-CRASH

I struggled to breathe, on my ass as I glued myself to the highest stairs to the fire escape, a few inches between my head and the edge of the building.

My camera still capturing what was in front of me, I witnessed the Lizard climb out from the hole he shot into, directly opposite me.

'H-He's right in front of me…'

I stated the obvious, my heart racing as I still hadn't taken a breath, too scared that he might notice me.

In what was a few seconds, I went from ecstatic to fearing for my life. It didn't help as I stared at the Lizard's green scales, long tongue slip in and out of his mouth and sharp teeth beckoning to bite down onto something.

However, what I waited for and thought to be inevitable didn't come. Instead, the Lizard's reptilian eyes didn't even land in my general direction, instead keeping his eyes on his enemy in the distance.

'Wait…that's right…Presence Nullification is active.'

I didn't feel different. I didn't feel invisible.

I understood that I wasn't completely undetectable as my physical body still existed to be seen.

However, my presence was significantly dimmed, not as easily standing out, or at all if you weren't paying attention.

Like how one always could see his nose, but their mind censored it.

Unless there was something to directly yell my presence, maybe touch or me initiating contact with the individual…I was censored.

And especially for this lizard who currently seethed in rage for his nemesis.

With this…

-CRACK

Lizard leapt back into action, directly over me to rejoin the fight as I flinched a little.

And all I could think was…

'What a shot…'

I regained my composure, shooting to my feet as my head and neck was just about able to peek over the edge of the building, giving me a clear view of the fight as I watched in awe through my camera lens.

"Back again, Conners?"

I could hear Spidey say, not worrying about my camera picking up the audio knowing it had the ability to capture far sounds.

Spidey quipped as he swung, leapt and dodged each and every single one of the attacks from the Five.

A sand blast from Sandman was leapt over with a backflip, a web sent to the former's face.

Upon landing, he was charged by multiple Mysterios, each identical, each pulling back a punch.

"Don't you ever try something new?" Spidey spat, leaping into the air as he shot a web at the real levitating Mysterio, swinging him around and hurling him at Electro who wasn't given a chance to blast his electricity.

-DING DING DING

At that moment, I turned to Dr Octopus, as did Spidey, a lull enveloping the battlefield.

It was interrupted as Dr Octopus looked up, giving a simple nod. And with this, the Sinister Five leapt to their feet, scattering.

"What the…" Before Spidey could question anything, Sandman split into millions of sand particles, collecting and enshrouding around Spidey into a sand tornado.

And just as Spidey clicked his teeth, ready to web himself out of there, it stopped, revealing the battlefield scarce, only the Hero remaining.

"What? Where'd they go?" Spidey questioned, looking around.

'Should I go after them? Who do people care more about?' I contemplated it too. But before I could make a decision, Spidey spoke.

"No…they didn't run, they're definitely plotting something. But what? Did it have to do with Chameleon being absent?"

Of course, he was mumbling, but I caught it nonetheless, so did my camera.

He leapt into the air, landing on a tall water tank with a flip.

"First the bank and now this? What's going on? Either way, I can't let them go…"

But before he could finish, he paused as he looked down, witnessing the entire alleyway and ground being filled with lava.

"Shit…Mysterio. Alright Spidey Sense, don't fail me now!"

'Huh? Spidey Sense?'

I questioned with an eyebrow raised, but now wasn't the time for that.

I focused back and…

'W-Wha…'

I froze, my heart seemingly stopping with me as cold sweat ran down my back.

'H-How…is he looking at me?!'

~Spiderman's POV~

'What is that?'

Spidey looked around…no, that wasn't the right way to describe it.

After all, his eyes were closed.

Upon doing this to solely rely on his Spidey Sense in an attempt to find the Sinister Six and bypass Mysterio's illusions…he found something else.

'At least…I think. I don't know. Something just doesn't feel right. Why did I feel something was off?'

Despite his eyes being closed, his head still moved around toward a certain direction.

'No…I'm doing it all wrong, I'm still inexperienced. The whole point of my spidey sense is to trust it. Rely on just that sense. Let it do all the work.'

With that, his head stopped moving, lowering as he focused.

'Yes…there definitely is something. I just don't know what. Is this them? The villain…'

Before he could finish his thoughts, feeling as though he were searching for a needle in a haystack, he remembered something.

'Yes…this has to be him. Chameleon!'

-THWAP!!!

Spidey shot his web toward the direction his head was in previously.

But he missed. He knew he did.

'How's he doing this? Mysterio's Illusions? A new trick of his to really be untraceable? Whatever it is, it's working. It's like trying to catch a ghost with a flashlight. Whatever, trust the Peter Tingle!'

He leapt forward, eyes closed, all noises damn near muffled out as he even resisted the urge to breathe from nose, knowing even smell could throw him off.

He was practically in complete darkness, but his body moved on its own, jumping off the edge of the building, shooting his web at the ghost, or rather Chameleon once again.

'Miss again!'

He noted, swinging through the alley, seemingly chasing his assailant down as he shot out multiple times but each missing like the last.

'Why's he so fast?'

It really was like chasing a ghost. He couldn't catch up.

He'd been chasing him for close to a minute or two and eventually, Spidey landed on the ground softly as he paused, looking up as he opened his eyes.

In front of him, the long labyrinth of alleys had come to an end, opening up to a bustling street filled with new yorkers.

'H-He's gone.'

Most likely. Either he sped out of the street while using the crowd as a distraction or he blended in, after all, that was Chameleon's whole shtick.

Spidey even tried focusing on his Sense again, but the "Thing" he was chasing really was gone.

'What…? Even the Spidey Sense couldn't sniff him out? Just what…was that?'

Meanwhile…

A boy with green eyes and black hair falling to his eyebrows hid behind a corner of the street, in an alleyway adjacent to the one Spidey had come out from, gripping his camera tightly as he breathed heavily, sweating like a pig.

He could barely even breathe, let alone speak. Yet, a word escaped his lips despite that.

'...Shit.'

He mumbled, looking to the side at the screen that had appeared before him.

A screen that, despite everything, made the corner of his lip curl upward.

[Congratulations…]

"Alright…So, I let the Sinister Six escape for them to potentially enact their grand plan in the future...I'll admit, not my best moment."

Spidey landed on the roof where the battle had occurred. No, rather a roof beside it, walking toward a wall.

"But even if Spidey hasn't had the best day…Parker'll be looking up for what's coming for him tomorrow!"

Spidey grinned so wide it was visible through his mask as he leapt up to grab a camera webbed to a wall.

However, as he started to look through his photos, his grin started to lessen gradually.

"What the hell…is this?"

What he expected to be high resolution photos of the battle he had, something he'd done countless times before, came out either blurred beyond comprehension or completely missing.

He frantically flipped through it all, but the result was the same.

Spidey dropped his arms…looking forward as all he could do was drop to his buttocks, head dropping as his hand pressed against his face.

"Nevermind…this is a sad day for us all."

He remained there for a few seconds, finally looking up.

"Sad, yes. But peculiar. Very peculiar."
