After sitting properly, Lux leaned out slightly and carefully scanned the rear. A dense, black mass of zombies was waving countless arms as they chased after the truck.
Even with his enhanced body, if he fell into that mass, he'd probably be torn apart instantly. Facing a horde of several hundred zombies, it would likely take multiple tanks to suppress them.
It seemed that firing guns inside the city was extremely dangerous.
"Lux, reserve ammo. There's only one spare magazine left."
HK416's clear voice came from the sleeper behind the cab.
A gloved hand stretched out from behind the driver's seat.
Lux opened his backpack, exchanged for a box of ammunition from the system space, and handed it over while pretending he had taken it out of his bag.
When he turned his head, Bob was fully focused on driving the truck forward. With the number of vehicles already blocking the road when the disaster broke out, Bob had no spare attention to look over at Lux.
"Hold on tight. Three cars are blocking the road ahead. We'll have to ram through."
Hearing Bob's warning, Lux quickly fastened his seatbelt and locked himself into the seat.
HK416 and MDR, positioned in the sleeper area behind the driver's seat, also stopped loading intermediate cartridges into the magazines, bracing both legs tightly against the backs of the front seats.
With a loud bang, the Lamborghini directly ahead was smashed forward several meters. Everyone felt a violent jolt as their bodies lurched forward, but since they had prepared in advance, no one was injured.
"Can we just crash our way into the school like this?"
After successfully ramming aside a small car, Bob asked excitedly.
"That'll probably be difficult… The school counts as a densely populated area. If there are too many zombies, a large amount of severed limbs could fill the space under the wheels. Once the wheels get jammed, if we're caught in a horde, we'll basically be waiting to die."
"And a heavy truck has a hard time turning around. During the turn, it won't have enough power or speed. Zombies could easily use that time to stack up, climb onto the cab, smash the windows, and eat us."
Lux shook his head, took out a bottle of soda, carefully released some of the carbonation, then handed it to MDR in the back seat.
"Oh!!! This kind of drink is amazing! Lux, I want instant noodles! This drink would make eating noodles even happier!"
After taking a sip, MDR shouted excitedly.
"You're dreaming. Where am I supposed to get hot water for noodles on this truck? If you're hungry, eat this instead."
Lux pulled out a bag of partially deflated chips from his backpack and handed it over.
Crunch crunch—the sound immediately followed.
"I take back what I said! As long as Miss MDR has these two things, she can stay happy forever! I! Great! Amazing! 416, don't you want to try? These two are a super perfect match!"
MDR yelled enthusiastically. Lux felt that if this were a peaceful daily life, MDR would probably join the stay-at-home crowd without hesitation.
"You eat first. I'll finish refilling the magazines before I eat."
HK416 focused on pressing bullets into the magazine one by one.
"Ah, I need ammo resupply too! After that fire support earlier, I only have two left. Hurry up and give me a box as well."
"How about you teach me how to load bullets? I can help you load the magazines too."
Lux turned to look at HK416 and MDR.
"Although this is our job and we really shouldn't trouble you, if Lux learns how to use firearms, it'll also increase survival chances."
"Loading magazines is pretty simple. But it takes time and effort—are you sure your stamina's okay? Using that blade actually consumes more energy than what we do."
HK416 asked with some concern.
"It's fine. There's nothing else to do while sitting in the truck anyway. Teach me."
Lux said with a smile.
HK416 nodded and demonstrated. Lux quickly learned how to load magazines.
"Since you're not tired, I'll leave mine to you then!"
MDR cheerfully handed over three empty magazines.
"Hey! MDR, your own work should be done by yourself! Don't add unnecessary burden to Lux!"
HK416 drove a knee into MDR's ribs, warning her coldly.
"Ow ow ow, fine, fine! No need to hit me… I'll do it myself."
MDR rubbed her ribs, looking aggrieved.
"It's okay, it's okay. I need practical experience anyway. You already taught me remember? Don't scold MDR."
Lux said gently.
"Hmph, Lux. If you spoil her like this, sooner or later you'll turn her into a useless person."
HK416 said with some dissatisfaction.
"How could that be! My tactical modu—ugh!"
Just as MDR was about to shout that her tactical module wouldn't degrade, she received another elbow strike from HK416 and shut her mouth in pain.
Realizing she'd said something wrong, MDR didn't complain anymore and gloomily ate her chips and cola.
"It's really nice, the way you all are… I originally thought you might be some young master from a wealthy family, but I didn't expect you to be this gentle with them."
Bob said enviously while driving.
"They're my most precious comrades, and also the most important people to me. Of course I have to treat them well."
Lux said with a smile while loading bullets.
Without them, he would probably have died in fear and hunger in the end.
So in this world, the most important people to him were HK416 and MDR.
Hearing Lux's words, HK416 paused in her bullet-loading motion. Her face reddened slightly, and she looked out the window to hide the joy in her heart.
"With the current road conditions, it'll probably take us four hours to reach X High School. By then it'll be dark. What do you think we should do?"
Bob asked. In the rearview mirror, he had also seen that horde capable of tearing everything apart. Without the three of them, he wouldn't even have been able to get this vehicle, let alone save his daughter.
So although he was desperate to rescue her, he still chose to ask Lux what to do.
They had already escaped the museum successfully—he didn't want to die on the way to saving someone.
If he died, his daughter would have no hope at all.
