Chapter 18 - Chapter 18: Heart Replacement

Judging from the current strength of her life origin, at most one month remained before she would die from heart failure.

At this point, conventional methods were clearly no longer viable. For congenital heart defects like this, ordinary medicine and surgery were completely useless.

This world also lacked professional equipment such as cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices.

Without equipment, she couldn't even be kept alive artificially. A solution was needed—one that addressed the problem at its root and ended it once and for all.

As Huo Yuhao pondered, his gaze rested on the woman lying on the sickbed: dry, split golden hair, a frail body, and wrinkles carved into her face by time.

In fact, he had one ultimate solution—directly replacing the heart.

Since the problem lay in a congenital defect of the heart, and there was no way to treat it through conventional means…

Then fine—flip the table. If the disease couldn't be cured, couldn't he just deal with the heart itself?

Huo Yuhao quickly constructed a rough plan in his mind.

He would remove her heart at the fastest possible speed, use his extremely precise spiritual power combined with Spirit Power to temporarily replace the heart's function, and at the same time push the Reversal Technique to its limits to regenerate a new heart during that window.

This process could not be completed by Huo Yuhao alone. Such ultra–high-precision control was no easy task even for him, despite possessing the Spirit Eye Mangekyō.

At present, his spiritual power was intangible and formless—it had to rely on Spirit Power as a medium. Yet Huo Yuhao only had Spirit Power at level nine and a half.

Therefore, he needed Jiang Nannan to provide Spirit Power support.

Thus, Huo Yuhao gently opened the door to the back room and looked at Jiang Nannan, who was pacing anxiously in the front hall.

"I have a method," he said, "but I don't know if you can accept it."

Soon, Huo Yuhao explained his treatment plan to Jiang Nannan in detail.

After hearing it, Jiang Nannan froze completely, stunned.

"Heart… heart replacement?"

Even after studying at Shrek Academy for so many years, Jiang Nannan had never heard of humans being able to replace a heart.

Huo Yuhao shook his head helplessly.

"Strictly speaking, it's not a heart replacement—it's destruction followed by rebirth through regeneration."

"This, miss, is the only solution I have at the moment."

Jiang Nannan lowered her head and thought for a while, then raised it. Her watery eyes looked straight at Huo Yuhao with determination.

"Clinic Master, how confident are you?"

Huo Yuhao didn't answer directly.

"A physician does not give percentages of success or failure," he said. "I only give my all."

Jiang Nannan clenched her teeth and nodded.

"In that case," Huo Yuhao said, "I'll have to rely on you to provide Spirit Power support."

The two walked into the back room, one after the other. Theoretically, they should have worn protective gear and performed the surgery in a sterile room.

But when in Rome, do as the Romans do—bacteria and such can talk to my Reversal Technique!

Huo Yuhao stood at the bedside and carefully explained the upcoming procedure to her mother.

The woman turned her head to look at Jiang Nannan, then back at Huo Yuhao.

"Doctor, I leave it to you. No matter what… please grant me relief."

Huo Yuhao administered the anesthetic.

Once it took effect, he lifted the blanket and removed her upper clothing, exposing the left side of her body.

Huo Yuhao drew the White Tiger Dagger, focusing all his spiritual power on the heart's location.

The removal of the heart had to be fast and precise—there could be no mistakes.

The tip of the White Tiger Dagger was shrouded in sharp white light, the sign that this class-five Spirit Tool had been activated.

Huo Yuhao glanced back at Jiang Nannan to make sure nothing would go wrong.

Though frightened, Jiang Nannan forced herself to remain steady. Her hands did not tremble—waiting for the exact moment Huo Yuhao made his move, she would begin supplying Spirit Power.

Huo Yuhao's gaze suddenly sharpened. A streak of white lightning cut through the air as the White Tiger Dagger sliced across the center of the woman's chest.

His spiritual power had long since locked onto her heart. The White Tiger Dagger in his hand danced like a butterfly, encountering not the slightest resistance within the chest cavity.

The entire process took only five seconds—the heart was completely removed without even grazing the lungs or the spine.

After extracting the heart, Huo Yuhao immediately injected spiritual power and Spirit Power into her body. Guided by his spiritual power, the Spirit Power formed a pressure pump to replace the heart's function.

Then the Reversal Technique was activated. Spiritual power continuously converted into bodily energy, regenerating a new heart.

Visibly, Huo Yuhao's previously rosy complexion turned pale.

The consumption of spiritual power and Spirit Power was enormous—greater even than when he had used the Spirit Eye Mangekyō to control the Third Brother.

Indeed, fine-grained control of energy was far more exhausting than large-scale release.

Fortunately, a moment later, an extremely gentle stream of Spirit Power flowed in from behind, replenishing Huo Yuhao's expenditure.

In truth, a Martial Soul's attributes influenced the nature of one's Spirit Power.

Spirit Power from fire-attribute Martial Souls was usually violent and difficult to control.

By contrast, Spirit Power from water-attribute Martial Souls was gentle and easy to manipulate.

Huo Yuhao wasn't sure whether Jiang Nannan's Soft-Bone Rabbit Martial Soul had an attribute, but the Spirit Power it carried was exceptionally mild.

As a supplement, it was excellent—a high-quality "power bank."

If she had possessed a fire- or lightning-attribute Martial Soul, Huo Yuhao would never have dared to use her Spirit Power. One slip could have blown his meridians apart.

Under the Reversal Technique, high-quality spiritual power was inverted into bodily energy of the same tier.

This bodily energy granted regenerative ability comparable to Wolverine's.

With his spiritual power, Huo Yuhao could clearly sense countless crimson threads drawing out within her chest cavity.

These threads converged slightly to the left of the chest, weaving together to form the outline of a heart.

They continued to expand and evolve—the left atrium, right atrium, and aorta appeared one by one.

When the flesh fully solidified and no trace of the thread-like state remained, a brand-new, fully functional heart appeared in the chest cavity.

As the new heart began to connect with the woman's body, Huo Yuhao gradually dispersed his spiritual power and Spirit Power, allowing the regenerated heart to take over blood circulation.

Only when both people in the room heard the powerful, steady beating of the newborn heart within the woman's chest did they finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Tears filled Jiang Nannan's eyes as she looked at the miracle on the sickbed. She felt as though she had fallen in love with the sensation of listening to the pulse of life itself.

Watching Huo Yuhao's exhausted back, she had never felt so clearly that miracles were not as distant as she had once believed.

She opened her mouth, wanting to say words of thanks, but realized that no words could truly express her gratitude.

Huo Yuhao noticed and waved a hand weakly behind him.

"Alright, I'm going to rest for a while. Take good care of your mother."

"For now, your mother will stay here. Whether the new heart can fully support her body still needs to be observed for a week."

"During this time, don't let her eat spicy or stimulating foods, and don't let her engage in intense activity."

"Her body hasn't adapted to the new heart yet."

Jiang Nannan nodded and carefully supported Huo Yuhao as she took the initiative to help him up to the second-floor bedroom to rest.

From her gentle movements, Huo Yuhao could clearly feel that the girl now seemed to hold an additional emotion toward him—something called admiration.
