Chapter 308: The Breaking of the Seal
The Four Red Yang Formation — Center
"Lady Mito. Are you prepared?"
Sarutobi Hiruzen stood at the edge of the formation, his white Hokage robes glowing crimson in the barrier's light. He addressed the frail old woman before him with the deep, genuine respect reserved for only a handful of living souls. This was the wife of the First Hokage. The first Jinchūriki of the Nine-Tails. A living legend whose strength, at its peak, had helped shape the very foundations of the Hidden Village system.
Now she was dying. And her final act would be to pass her burden to the next generation.
"I am ready." Mito's voice was soft but steady. "It is only this child who will suffer."
She gazed at Kushina with eyes that held the weight of decades—love and sorrow and pride all tangled together. So young. So fierce. To be saddled with such a fate, to carry a demon inside her soul, to never live as an ordinary girl...
"I'm not afraid, Grandmother Mito." Kushina's voice did not waver. Her eyes burned with the same fire that had once blazed in Mito's own youth. "This is the fate of the Uzumaki clan. It's my fate too. I will suppress the Nine-Tails. I will keep it trapped inside me so it can never harm this world again."
Mito smiled. A fragile, trembling smile. "I know you will. You are a good child."
She turned to the Hokage. "Little Sarutobi. Stand back. When the Nine-Tails' chakra overflows, it will strike at anything nearby. Leave this to me."
Little Sarutobi. There were perhaps three people in the entire world who could call the Third Hokage by such a name and live. Uzumaki Mito was one of them. She had watched Hiruzen grow from a promising boy into the leader of the most powerful village in the shinobi world. To her, he would always be little Sarutobi—the earnest student of her husband's brother, the young man who had carried the Will of Fire forward into a new era.
Hiruzen did not take offense. He felt only a deep, aching fondness, and beneath it, sorrow. The last remnants of the previous generation were slipping away. With Mito's passing, an entire age of shinobi history would close its final chapter. The grievances of the old era. The dreams of the founders. All of it would fade into memory.
He withdrew to a distance of a hundred meters, close enough to intervene if catastrophe struck, far enough to avoid the initial backlash.
"Kushina. Remember everything I taught you." Mito's hands rose, forming the first seal. "Do not be afraid. Do not be nervous. Your grandmother will not let you come to harm."
Her fingers moved through the intricate patterns of the Uzumaki clan's most sacred technique. The Eight Trigrams Seal. A double-layered binding of the Four Symbols—the ultimate prison for a Tailed Beast. When completed, it would block the Nine-Tails' chakra from leaking, suppress its consciousness, and prevent it from influencing its Jinchūriki. Only the host's death or a deliberate release could weaken the seal.
Mito completed the final hand sign and pressed her palm against her abdomen.
Black seal patterns erupted across her body. They spread like living ink, racing over her skin, and then—in an instant—they flared crimson. The marks burned with the intensity of brands, searing themselves into visibility. The sound of dragging chains echoed through the formation. The grinding of ancient gears. The unmistakable noise of a cage being unlocked.
Uzumaki Mito released the seal.
The Seal Space
In the endless darkness where the Nine-Tails had been imprisoned for decades, something shifted.
This place had no sunlight. No life. No space—only void. Time had long since lost its meaning here. For the Tailed Beasts, immortal and eternal, time was meaningless anyway. A decade was a blink. A century was a nap. But the isolation—the absolute, unrelenting nothingness—had gnawed at even the Nine-Tails' ancient patience.
A pair of scarlet eyes snapped open in the darkness. They blazed like lanterns in a ghost street, twin flames of malevolent fire.
The seal was breaking.
The Nine-Tails rose. Its massive form—orange fur bristling, nine tails lashing, fangs bared in a snarl of pure, undiluted hatred—filled the cage. The cold water that had covered the floor of its prison erupted into a maelstrom. Waves crashed against the bars. The iron groaned. The sealing tags that had held for decades began to smolder and burn.
Free. FREE. I'M GOING TO BE FREE!
The beast's roar was not sound but pure chakra—a shockwave of hatred and fury that shattered the seal space like glass.
Outside, in the physical world, Uzumaki Mito's body transformed.
Scarlet chakra erupted from her frail form, coating her in the shroud of the Nine-Tailed Fox. The Tailed Beast Cloak manifested in its full, terrifying glory. Behind her, nine tails of pure malevolent energy whipped through the air, each one capable of leveling buildings, each one dripping with the fox's unquenchable rage. The ground beneath her cracked. The air itself seemed to burn.
The moon above, already fat and silver, seemed to darken. A blood moon. An omen of calamity.
"Grandmother!"
Kushina was ready. Her hands flew through seals she had practiced ten thousand times. From her back, golden chains erupted—the Adamantine Sealing Chains, the ultimate expression of the Uzumaki bloodline. They shot forward, wrapping around Mito's transformed body, binding the fox's chakra with the unbreakable power of order itself.
The crimson cloak flickered. Diminished. Receded.
The Nine-Tails' chakra retreated like a tide pulling back from the shore. The tails vanished. The burning aura faded. Mito's human form returned—frail, exhausted, but unbroken.
"Well done," Mito whispered. Her voice was barely audible now, each word an effort. "But the next step is the most dangerous. The transfer itself. The Nine-Tails will fight with everything it has. Be careful of its hatred. Do not let the negative energy consume you. Do not lose yourself."
The Seal Space — Renewed
Mito's consciousness materialized in the seal space once more. Kushina stood beside her, linked by the golden chains that bound their chakra together. Before them, the Nine-Tails raged.
"You wretched woman! You foolish humans! Did you think I would submit quietly?! Did you think I would crawl into a new cage without a fight?!"
The fox's voice was thunder and earthquakes. It slammed against the bars of its prison, each impact sending shockwaves through the seal space. Its eyes—those terrible, blazing eyes—were fixed on the two women with a hatred that had fermented for decades.
"I will tear you apart! I will devour your souls! I WILL BE FREE!"
Kushina met its gaze without flinching. The fear she had felt during her first visit to this place was gone. She had seen her grandmother suppress this beast. She had seen the chains bind it. She understood now—the Nine-Tails was powerful, but it was not invincible. It was a prisoner. A bully. A creature of rage and pain that lashed out because it knew nothing else.
"Stupid fox," she muttered under her breath.
"Stop struggling, Nine-Tails." Mito's voice was calm. Implacable. "You know what the sealing techniques of our clan can do. They were created for this purpose—to restrain the Tailed Beasts. My journey ends here. This child will walk with you now. I cannot resolve your hatred. I can only seal it away. Forever."
The Nine-Tails' eyes flickered.
But its consciousness was reaching elsewhere.
Outside the Formation — The Telepathic Link
The Nine-Tails had felt it. During its earlier rampage, when the seal had weakened and its chakra had leaked across the village, it had sensed something unexpected. Another Tailed Beast. Here. In Konoha.
The Five-Tails. Kokuō.
The fox did not know why its sibling was here. It did not care. What mattered was the opportunity. The Nine-Tails was proud—arrogant beyond measure—but it was not stupid. Breaking the seal alone would be difficult. With Kokuō's help, it would be possible. Two Tailed Beasts, working in concert, could shatter any prison.
The tailed beasts were siblings. They shared a common origin. Surely Kokuō would help. They were family.
Nine-Tails: Oi. Five-Tails. If you're there, answer me.
Five-Tails: I'm not here.
Nine-Tails: ...Don't play games with me. If you don't answer, I'll assume you're in league with that tanuki bastard Shukaku.
Five-Tails: Go away, stinky fox.
Nine-Tails: Wait! Brother! Sister! Sibling of mine! This is my one chance. If I don't break free now, I'll be sealed for another century. You have to help me!
Five-Tails: ...You've never called me 'sibling' in your entire existence.
Nine-Tails: I'm calling you now! Please! These humans—they've imprisoned me for decades. You know what that's like. You know the darkness. The silence. The endless, crushing nothing. Help me break this seal. Together we can—
Five-Tails: No.
Nine-Tails: ...What?
Five-Tails: I said no. I'm not helping you destroy this village. I have... reasons to stay here. Good reasons. And even if I didn't—you spent the last thousand years calling me weak. Calling all of us weak. Now you want my help? Earn it.
Nine-Tails: You traitorous—
Five-Tails: Careful. The human I'm contracted to is listening. And he's very protective of the girl you're about to be sealed inside. If I were you, I'd cooperate.
Nine-Tails: ...What human? What are you talking about? Kokuō! KOKUŌ!
The connection went silent.
The Nine-Tails stood alone in its crumbling seal space, its one potential ally having just slammed the door in its face. The golden chains were tightening. The new seal was forming. The window of escape was closing.
And somewhere in the darkness outside the Four Red Yang Formation, Ragnar opened his eyes. The Five-Tails' voice echoed in his mind, carrying a note of grim satisfaction.
The Nine-Tails is... not having a good night.
Good, Ragnar thought. It's about to get worse.
