Chapter 310 - Chapter 310: The Demon Fox Rampant

Chapter 310: The Demon Fox Rampant

"ROOOOOOAR!"

A scream of pure, distilled hatred tore through the silent night. The beast's roar was not merely sound—it was pressure, it was terror, it was the voice of ancient malice given physical form. Windows shattered across Konoha. Children woke screaming. The very air seemed to thicken with the weight of the Nine-Tails' fury.

It had been decades since that sound had been heard in the Land of Fire. Decades since the Nine-Tailed Fox had last reared its head and howled its defiance at the world. An entire generation had grown up knowing the beast only as a legend, a bedtime story, a warning whispered by old shinobi who remembered darker days. But legends had a way of becoming real when you least expected them.

The villagers poured into the streets, their faces pale in the crimson glow that now bathed the night. The moon above had turned the color of blood. The stars had vanished, swallowed by the oppressive weight of the fox's chakra. Every living thing in Konoha—human and animal alike—felt the same primal terror. The same instinctive knowledge that a predator of unimaginable power was stirring.

The First Hokage suppressed the Nine-Tails, the old veterans thought. But Hashirama is dead. Who can stop it now?

Konoha's shinobi mobilized with the desperate efficiency of a village that had prepared for this nightmare for generations. Emergency protocols activated. Evacuation routes opened. ANBU operatives swept through the streets, directing civilians toward underground shelters, keeping order with calm voices and steady hands. The Sealing Corps began erecting secondary barriers, desperate attempts to contain the damage if the worst came to pass.

The streets filled with fleeing families. Mothers clutched infants to their chests. Fathers carried elderly parents on their backs. Children stumbled along in confused terror, too young to understand what was happening, too frightened to ask.

The Uchiha Quarter

Uchiha Kagami stood at the edge of his family compound, his ancient eyes fixed on the distant crimson glow. The silhouette of the Nine-Tails was visible now—a massive, vulpine shape coalescing from pure chakra, its nine tails lashing against the sky.

"Nine-Tails," he murmured. "So you've finally broken free."

His fingers brushed the corner of his eye. Behind the calm facade, the Mangekyō Sharingan—the legendary ocular power that only a handful of Uchiha had ever awakened—rested dormant. Waiting. The Mangekyō could control the Nine-Tails. That was the secret the clan guarded so jealously. The power that Madara had once wielded to bend the fox to his will.

But Kagami would not use it.

Not because he could not. His ocular power was formidable. But the consequences of revealing such an ability were too terrible to contemplate. If the village learned that an Uchiha could control the beast that was currently threatening to destroy them, they would not be grateful. They would be terrified. The suspicion would fester. The persecution would intensify. And his own clan—those who dreamed of reclaiming their former glory—would see him as a weapon to be used, a tool to seize power.

Damned if I do. Damned if I don't.

He turned away from the spectacle, his heart heavy, and began organizing the evacuation of his family.

The Streets of Konoha

The Sannin moved through the chaos with practiced efficiency. Tsunade directed civilians toward the shelters, her voice carrying over the panicked crowd with the authority of a battlefield commander. Jiraiya summoned toads to assist with the evacuation, their massive forms clearing paths through the debris. Orochimaru's snakes slithered through the alleys, searching for anyone trapped or left behind.

"That's the power of the Nine-Tails," Orochimaru breathed, his golden eyes fixed on the distant formation. Even from this distance, the fox's chakra was overwhelming—a tidal wave of malevolent energy that made the Five-Tails' rampage seem almost quaint by comparison.

"Yeah." Jiraiya's usual levity was gone. "Compared to this, the Five-Tails was practically a pet."

Half of the Nine-Tails' power had once pushed Naruto to surpass even the Deva Path of Pain. That was half. The beast currently manifesting above the Four Red Yang Formation was whole. Complete. The full, undiluted might of the strongest Tailed Beast, compressed into a vessel that was crumbling as they watched.

"Did Ye Chen go to the formation?" Tsunade's voice was tight.

"Hiruzen assigned him to perimeter security," Orochimaru confirmed. "He should be there now."

"I'm going."

"Don't." Jiraiya's hand caught her arm. "Tsunade. Think. Ye Chen beat the Five-Tails with his bare hands. The old man is there. Captain Sakumo is there. If we go charging in, we'll just get in the way. You know what happens when someone without a counter to Tailed Beast Chakra enters that kind of battlefield."

Tsunade's jaw clenched. She wanted to argue. Every instinct screamed at her to run toward the danger, to stand beside her little brother, to help. But Jiraiya was right. At this stage in their development, the Sannin were powerful but not yet fully realized. Jiraiya had not mastered Sage Mode. Orochimaru had not yet accumulated his arsenal of forbidden techniques. Tsunade herself had not yet developed the Strength of a Hundred Seal.

If they entered that formation now, they would be liabilities. One Tailed Beast Bomb would be enough.

"Jiraiya is right," Orochimaru said quietly. "It's better to worry about yourself than to worry about Ye-kun. He has survived worse than this."

Tsunade closed her eyes. "Damn it."

Outside the Four Red Yang Formation

Hatake Sakumo stared at the erupting chakra with the cold, calculating gaze of a man who had already made peace with his own death.

The Nine-Tails was breaking free. The seal was failing. Lady Mito was down. Kushina was... Kushina was still alive. He could see her small form within the barrier, struggling to rise, reaching toward her fallen grandmother. But the fox's chakra was pushing her back, pinning her to the ground.

I have to go in there.

The thought came without hesitation. Without doubt. He was the ANBU Commander. The White Fang. The shinobi who wore the Hokage Half-Sleeve. If he fled now—if he prioritized his own safety over the village's survival—everything he stood for would be meaningless.

His hand moved to the Half-Sleeve on his arm. The crimson flame pattern seemed to glow in the fox's chakra-light. A promise. A responsibility. A chain that bound him to something greater than himself.

"Kakashi. I will come back alive."

He fastened the Half-Sleeve tighter. Then he stepped into the formation.

Another Direction

"Evacuate the perimeter! Don't let anyone through!" Ragnar's voice was sharp, cutting through the chaos. "I'm going in."

"Rakshasa!" Moonlight Hayate's hand shot out, grabbing his arm. "Have you thought this through? The Nine-Tails is—"

"There's someone important to me in there." Ragnar's voice was calm. Absolute. "That's all that matters."

Hayate's hand fell away. Behind his mask, his expression was unreadable—but his silence spoke volumes.

"Come back alive," Aburame Shikumi said. Two words. The most he had spoken all night.

"Come back alive," Yamanaka Kaiichi echoed.

"Come back alive," Hayate whispered.

Ragnar did not look back. His form flickered and vanished into the crimson glow of the Four Red Yang Formation.

Inside the Formation

The beast had nearly succeeded.

The Nine-Tails' chakra had overwhelmed Mito's failing body. Most of its power had already manifested in the physical world—the massive fox silhouette that loomed above the formation, its nine tails whipping through the air, its jaws open in a permanent snarl of triumph. Only a few minutes more, and the seal would break completely. The Nine-Tails would be free.

"Grandmother!" Kushina's voice was raw with grief. Mito's body lay on the scorched earth, still as death, surrounded by a pool of crimson chakra that pulsed like a living heart.

Then the body moved.

It rose. Jerkily. Unnaturally. As if pulled by invisible strings. The eyes snapped open—and they were not Mito's eyes. They were the eyes of the Nine-Tails. Scarlet. Slitted. Burning with ancient malevolence.

"Humans." The voice that emerged from Mito's lips was layered—her own frail tones overlaid with the deep, rumbling bass of the fox. "You cannot control me. This woman sealed me for decades. Decades in darkness. Decades in silence. And now... now I will use her body to destroy everything she cherished. This village. These people. All of it."

"You... you're the Nine-Tails!" Sarutobi Hiruzen's face was ashen. The beast had seized control of the Jinchūriki's body. The situation was worse than he had imagined. Far worse.

Mito's body began to transform. Fox-like features emerged—whisker marks on the cheeks, elongated canines, nails sharpening into claws. The Tailed Beast Cloak flickered around her form, denser than before, more complete. Behind her, the phantom tails of the Nine-Tails lashed and writhed, each one a whip of destruction. The ground beneath her feet cracked. Fissures spread outward, swallowing earth and stone. The very air seemed to scream.

"Get out of my grandmother's body!" Kushina's roar was pure anguish.

"Shadow Clone Technique!"

Hiruzen's hands blurred through seals. A duplicate materialized beside him—an exact copy of the Hokage in his prime. Behind the clone, a massive Fūma Shuriken materialized from a storage scroll, its four blades gleaming in the crimson light.

"Kushina! Stay back! I will handle this!"

The Third Hokage faced the possessed body of his mentor's wife, his expression grim, his heart heavier than it had ever been. He had hoped—prayed—that this day would never come. That he would never have to raise his hand against Uzumaki Mito. But the thing standing before him was no longer the woman he had respected and loved. It was the Nine-Tails. The demon fox. The enemy of all mankind.

The Fūma Shuriken spun in his clone's grip.

The Nine-Tails smiled with Mito's lips—a terrible, twisted expression that had no place on that gentle face.

"Come then, Hokage. Show me what the Third is capable of. Show me if you can match the First!"

The battle for Konoha had begun.
