Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: Batman’s Way of Sleeping

Chapter 14: Batman's Way of Sleeping

Miles clearly couldn't understand why they were still pursuing the Bat when he had already explained he'd witnessed everything.

"Can we discuss not going to him?" Miles, following Peter Parker, tried to persuade him to change his mind. Miles truly didn't want to encounter the Bat again. He felt the Bat was actively unfriendly toward him.

"Miles, you have to trust me, he's a very talkative guy," Peter Parker insisted. In his eyes, Wayne's coldness was just a sign of his general reluctance to speak. He doesn't like to talk? I'll just talk a little more for both of us.

"But I always feel like the way he looks at me is full of deep disgust," Miles replied, genuinely unsettled by Wayne's fierce gaze.

Peter Parker stopped, turned, and clapped Miles lightly on the shoulder. "Believe me, he doesn't just look at you that way. He looks at everyone that way, even me."

With that, Peter Parker vaulted away in the direction Wayne had vanished.

"Okay." With his unwilling mentor already gone, Miles could only agree. But the speed Peter was moving at made it impossible for the newly powered kid to keep up.

After running for a while, Wayne realized he had two small tails following him. The ingrained skills of the original Batman instantly told him how to evade their immature pursuit. Peter's tracking was adequate, but Miles's was full of holes.

Wayne fired his grapple gun, but this time, his movement was extremely fast, leaving the area immediately.

The sudden burst of speed caught Miles off guard, and even Peter, who had slowed slightly for his new sidekick, was momentarily unable to react. Peter decided Miles had to wait; he had to catch the Bat first.

Even when Peter reached Wayne's landing spot, the Bat was gone, as if he possessed an invisibility power.

"Whoosh!"

A Batarang flew past Peter's ear and buried itself into the wall nearby. Peter's Spider-Sense hadn't given an early warning, meaning the throw was not intended to harm him.

"There's no need to say hello with a weapon," Peter said, turning to face the Bat, who slowly emerged from the shadows.

"Why follow me?" Wayne's voice was concise and direct.

"We may need your help." The caution Peter displayed was something Wayne hadn't seen in the movie. This meticulousness was perhaps due to Peter's life as a solitary hero, unaccustomed to partners.

"I'm not entirely familiar with these abilities yet. I think you might need to slow down a little," Miles finally gasped, catching up to the two.

"This guy should have explained everything to you already. You two can solve it yourselves. I have my own plan, so it's best not to disturb each other." Wayne immediately threw a smoke bomb down.

Even with Spider-Man's enhanced senses, the smoke was disorienting. When it cleared, Wayne was gone.

"Ahem, cough, cough. It looks like you were right." Miles, choked by the smoke, weakly leaned on Peter Parker's shoulder. He was convinced: the Bat treated everyone exactly the same way.

Wayne ignored Peter Parker and Miles. Following the normal plot, they would be fine and would soon be collected by the other Spider-People. Furthermore, if he intervened, he might cause the plot to deviate, potentially leading to Kingpin's team being absent from the crucial research lab, which would ruin Wayne's own plan.

Thomas, in his head, approved of the decision. Wayne's plan was the absolute priority. Helping others only happened if it didn't affect his own critical path—a philosophy Thomas himself had adopted after the Amazonian-Atlantean war began.

Before returning home, Wayne meticulously checked the entire neighborhood for Kingpin's spies. His actions tonight had clearly served as a warning. There were no more fixed lookouts watching the Parker family, nor were there any suspicious bums acting as mobile watchers.

Wayne landed lightly in the backyard of his new house. His body moved as if weightless.

"Maybe I can get a good night's sleep." Walking into his house, Wayne neatly stored his equipment before entering the bedroom and collapsing onto the bed. His head hit the pillow, and he instantly fell into a deep sleep.

Just two short hours later, Wayne opened his eyes again.

"Motherfucker!"

Wayne finally understood how Batman managed to fight criminals all night and still maintain a demanding social life during the day, even finding time to discuss the philosophy of life with far-eastern ballet dancers.

With a sleep cycle that required only two hours to completely replenish his energy, anyone could do it.

But for Wayne, who enjoyed sleeping until dawn, it was a painful adaptation. The sky outside was still pitch black.
