Chapter 4 - THE FOREST THAT WATCHES

Chapter-4 — The Forest That Watches

The bunker no longer felt foreign.

It breathed with him.

Every corridor pulsed faintly with abyssal veins… reacting to his presence like a living organ recognizing its heart.

Draven stood at the exit corridor leading to the surface door.

Fully equipped now.

Leather armor fitted tight across his torso.

Dagger strapped to his thigh.

Longbow resting across his back.

A predator in early evolution.

He exhaled slowly.

"System… map."

The forest layout unfolded before his vision.

A three-layered domain.

Not random wilderness.

Structured.

Designed.

Isolated Border Forest — Territorial Layout

Zone 1 — SAFE ZONE

Radius: 1,000 meters from bunker exit

Threat Level: None

Authority: Absolute

Zone 2 — GREEN ZONE

Threat Level: Low–Moderate

Contains:

Herb clusters

Fruit trees

Wildlife

Minor beasts

Zone 3 — RED ZONE

Threat Level: Extreme

Contains:

Mutated beasts

Demon beasts

Poison swamps

Corrupted flora

Unknown beings

Future Authority Projection:

Upon Authority Level 3 → Entire forest becomes Manipulator Domain.

Draven stepped outside.

Mist rolled across the ground like crawling spirits.

The Safe Zone greeted him in silence.

No birds chirped.

No insects buzzed.

No wind disturbed the trees.

It wasn't peaceful.

It was submissive.

Every tree leaned slightly inward… as if bowing.

The ground itself felt aware of his footsteps.

He walked forward slowly.

Testing.

Observing.

Learning.

SAFE ZONE — Absolute Control

He extended his hand.

"Manipulation Authority — Pulse."

A ripple of dark energy spread outward through the soil.

The forest responded instantly.

Roots shifted beneath the ground.

Branches bent.

Stones rolled aside to clear his path.

Even the mist parted before him.

Draven's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Full obedience…"

System text appeared.

Safe Zone Functions Unlocked:

Environmental manipulation

Terrain reshaping

Concealment barrier

Intruder rejection field

To test it…

He gave a command.

"Allow entry… crow."

One of his Abyss Crows flew toward the bunker entrance.

The moment it crossed the 1,000-meter threshold…

The barrier parted for it like water.

Then sealed again.

He nodded.

"Good."

No being could enter here without his permission.

Not beasts.

Not humans.

Not even divine followers unless overwhelmingly powerful.

This bunker wasn't just a base.

It was a womb of calamity.

But safety bred weakness.

So he walked beyond it.

Into the Green Zone.

GREEN ZONE — Life That Still Breathes

The atmosphere changed immediately.

Sound returned.

Wind.

Leaves rustling.

Animal footsteps.

The scent of soil and fruit.

Sunlight actually pierced the canopy here — illuminating herb patches and tall fruit trees with glowing mana veins.

Draven crouched beside a plant cluster.

System scan activated.

Herb Identified — Silverleaf Stem

Effects:

Minor wound healing

Poison resistance boost

Alchemy compatible

He harvested it carefully… storing it in his system inventory.

Further ahead he spotted fruit trees.

Dark red fruits hung like lanterns.

One fell naturally.

He picked it up.

Bit into it cautiously.

Sweet… with a faint mana surge.

System confirmed it safe.

"Resource zone…"

He moved deeper.

A deer-like beast emerged from the bushes.

Not mutated.

Just mana-enhanced wildlife.

It froze upon seeing him.

Predator instinct activated automatically.

He could hear its heartbeat.

Fast.

Panicked.

He raised his hand slightly.

"Fear manipulation."

A thin ripple of aura spread.

The beast collapsed instantly — trembling, unable to move.

Draven approached calmly.

Placed his dagger at its throat.

Paused.

Then withdrew.

"Not needed."

He wasn't hunting for food.

He was hunting for growth.

So he released it.

The aura faded.

The deer fled instantly.

He observed silently.

Testing control.

Precision.

Too much fear could kill weaker creatures instantly.

He needed balance.

First Green Zone Hunt

Hours passed as he explored.

Eventually he encountered a minor beast.

A Horned Moss Boar — tusks covered in hardened bark, moss armor plating its back.

It charged the moment it sensed him.

Draven didn't dodge immediately.

He watched its movement.

Learning the world's combat rhythm.

At the last second—

He sidestepped.

Dagger slashed across its eye.

The beast roared.

He jumped back… drawing his bow mid-motion.

Arrow released.

Straight through its skull.

The body collapsed heavily.

System Notification

Beast Slain.

Rewards:

Power Fragment +5

Biomass Absorbed

Minor Authority EXP

He knelt beside the corpse.

Placed his palm on it.

"Sacrificial conversion."

The body dissolved into ash… energy flowing into him.

Muscle density increased slightly.

Reflex latency reduced.

His curse stabilization rose to 47%.

He exhaled slowly.

"Green Zone… adequate training ground."

But not enough.

His eyes shifted deeper into the forest.

Where the trees grew twisted.

Where mist turned dark.

Where even birds refused to fly.

The Red Zone

RED ZONE — Where Nature Rots

The boundary felt like crossing into another world.

The soil turned black.

Fungus glowed toxic green.

Trees bled sap resembling coagulated blood.

The air itself tasted poisonous.

System warnings flooded instantly.

Environmental Hazards Detected:

Toxic spores

Corruption miasma

Demon beast presence

Recommendation: Caution.

Draven smirked slightly.

"Good."

This is where growth lived.

He released familiars.

Crows took the sky.

Spiders spread across branches.

Centipedes burrowed underground.

Their shared vision painted the Red Zone like a surveillance grid.

That's when he saw it.

A massive silhouette moving through the fog.

First Demon Beast Encounter

Species: Venomhide Lizard

Size: 4 meters long.

Skin: Purple-black scales secreting acid venom.

Eyes: Mutated — triple layered.

Threat Level: High (For Authority Level 1)

The beast hissed… sensing him immediately.

Unlike Green Zone beasts—

This one felt his curse.

And wanted to devour it.

It lunged.

Faster than expected.

Draven rolled aside… acid saliva melting the ground where he stood.

He fired arrows mid-roll.

Two hit.

No penetration.

"Armor too dense…"

The lizard charged again.

He switched tactics.

"Fear amplification."

A dark wave hit the beast.

It hesitated…

But didn't stop.

Demon beasts possessed resistance to mental manipulation.

So he escalated.

"Pain manipulation."

He snapped his fingers.

Invisible pressure crushed its nerves.

The lizard shrieked — body spasming violently.

That opening—

Was enough.

He sprinted forward… sliding beneath its jaw—

Dagger plunged into its eye socket.

Twisted.

Pulled.

Black blood erupted.

The beast thrashed wildly… crashing through corrupted trees before collapsing.

Silence returned slowly.

Draven stood there breathing heavily.

His first real fight.

His first near-death risk.

He looked at the corpse… then laughed softly.

Not from madness.

From exhilaration.

"This world… finally fights back."

Sacrificial Conversion — Demon Beast

Rewards:

Power Fragment +22

Ability Shard: Venom Resistance

Biomass — High Grade

Authority EXP — Significant

Curse Stabilization: 55%

He felt the change immediately.

His veins stopped burning as violently.

His body was adapting faster now.

The evil god's insignia pulsed once… approving.

Domain Foreshadowing

As he stood there absorbing power…

The forest reacted.

Corrupted trees bent slightly toward him.

Demon insects crawled closer… not attacking.

Observing.

Recognizing.

System notification appeared faintly.

Forest Authority Sync — 3%

Future Projection:

Upon reaching Authority Level 3 → Forest becomes Absolute Domain.

All beasts submit or perish.

Terrain obeys host will.

Draven looked around slowly.

"So even nature… can be manipulated."

He liked that.

A lot.

Training Montage — Ability Practice

Over the next several days:

He hunted continuously.

Green Zone for stamina and precision.

Red Zone for lethal combat growth.

He practiced:

Fear pulses (wide vs focused)

Pain nerve targeting

Familiar coordination hunting

Bow accuracy under movement

Stealth assassination

He even experimented with familiars.

Familiar Combat Tests

Crows:

Blinded a beast mid-charge.

Spiders:

Webbed a demon wolf's limbs long enough for execution.

Centipede:

Implanted into a captured bandit who wandered too close to the forest edge.

Now he had a second controlled host inside Virelith.

Information flow doubled.

New Familiar Unlock

After enough hunts—

System notification appeared.

Familiar Evolution Unlocked

New Option:

Shadow Burrow Rats

Functions:

Underground mapping

Trap detection

Corpse consumption → Biomass generation

Limit: Colony type

Draven accepted instantly.

Soon…

The underground beneath the forest belonged to him too.

Chapter Closing — Predator Established

Night fell.

Draven returned to the Safe Zone.

The mist parted to welcome him.

Familiars gathered silently.

His armor stained.

His aura heavier.

His presence sharper.

He stood at the bunker entrance… looking back at the forest.

Green Zone life still moved freely.

Red Zone horrors still roamed.

But now…

They were aware of him.

Learning him.

Preparing.

And slowly…

Submitting.

System text glowed one last time before he entered:

Manipulator Authority — Progress Rising

Next Unlock Approaching:

→ Emotion Erasure

→ Beast Subjugation

→ Domain Expansion (Forest)

Draven stepped back inside the bunker.

The door sealed behind him like a closing maw.

He whispered quietly:

"Soon…"

"This forest won't just watch me…"

"It will belong to me."

And deep in the Red Zone—

Demon beasts howled…

Not in rage.

But in instinctive recognition—

That a new apex predator had entered their world.
