Chapter 05: Ignis Draconis

When Harry woke up that morning, the events of the dream were still present in his mind.

He glanced down at his hands and realized that he was clenching them with enough force to make his nails dig into his palms.

It was like it had just happened to him. The feelings of anger and sadness were there, even if he was no longer in the dream world.

Sweat was falling across his face, and he could even hear the beats of his heart.

"Why do I keep dreaming about that place… those people?" Harry didn't understand it.

But he was sure this was not a normal thing that people experienced.

One time, he made the mistake of trying to talk about it with his aunt.

It was a long time ago, and Harry was a much more naïve kid.

During one of the first dreams he ever experienced, he saw someone dying and got very scared, so he went to talk with his aunt, with tears in his eyes, and told her about the strange dreams.

The woman just got extremely upset and hit him in the head with a pan.

Later on, Harry learned that the main reason for this was that he had mentioned the word 'magic'. And apparently, it was one big taboo word in his family.

The person that he saw dying in his dream was some sort of evil sorcerer that Merlin had killed by conjuring a ball of fire.

Harry had no other way to describe that scene than… magic.

He continued to have dreams after that, but he never shared another one with any member of the Dursley family.

Instead, he tried to find some information in the library about the Kingdom of Camelot, Merlin, or any of the people he had seen in that world.

But no matter how much he tried, none of the encyclopedias he read made any mention of them.

This made him conclude that the world of his dream was not real and that it was just something created by his own imagination.

Harry was too afraid to share any of this with a teacher, just in case they decided to speak with his aunt and uncle, so things continued like this for years.

He would sometimes go to sleep and have these strange dreams and never tell anyone about them again.

"Boy! Come out here!"

Harry heard someone banging on his door, making the old hinges shake.

"Uncle Vernon?" Harry sounded confused. He had no idea what could have made his uncle so angry first thing in the morning.

He got off the bed and was moving closer to the door when it burst open, and a large, fat hand reached inside his room, grabbing him by the shirt and pulling him outside.

"Ahh!" Harry was thrown like a rag doll and sent flying into the living room, where he hit his shoulder against one of the couches before reaching the floor.

"What's going on?" Petunia Dursley walked down the stairs in a rush when she heard the commotion and found her husband standing over their nephew.

Vernon's face was completely red with fury, and his eyes looked almost ready to pop out.

"Vernon, what did…" It was when she got a clear view of the living room that she understood why her husband was so enraged.

Their beautiful new television had been destroyed. There was a large hole in the center of the glass screen, so the chances of repairing it were pretty much none.

They had just gotten it a month ago for Vernon's birthday. And it had immediately become Vernon's and Dudley's favorite object in the entire house.

The man grabbed Harry by the neck and lifted him into the air. "What did you do?!" He screamed into the boy's face.

Petunia looked conflicted. As much as she hated her sister's disgusting son, she was aware of how much trouble they could get into if the boy actually died.

Not just with the police, but also with the magical world. Albus Dumbledore had personally left Harry in their care, and if something were to happen to that boy, they would have to give explanations to the old Headmaster of Hogwarts.

That was the last thing Petunia wanted.

"Vernon, dear…" She glanced at Harry's face as it was turning increasingly blue. "Let's calm down and talk about this… we can punish the boy later, yes?"

But Vernon was too infuriated to listen. In fact, right now he couldn't even hear what his wife was telling him or feel her hands pulling at his shirt.

With bloodshot eyes, Vernon increased the grip on his nephew's neck.

Harry was desperately trying to free himself as his body ran out of oxygen.

He started to feel dizzy, and his vision was becoming blurry.

'Am I going to die?' Harry didn't understand why his uncle was so enraged, as he never bothered to give him any explanation.

'Why?… What did I do to deserve this?' Harry had no idea.

He tried to live his life very quietly, without bothering anyone or anything, but apparently, even that was not enough.

To him, the world was nothing but an unfair and cruel place.

That made him so angry… he wished he had the power to do something about it. Harry hated being a weak child that his uncle and cousin could push around as much as they wanted.

He hated being their slave and their punching bag.

He wished he had the power of that person from his dreams. If only he could cast spells like Merlin.

'If only…' His mind was becoming numb and he could no longer see anything clearly.

Just as he felt his life being drained away, images and words began to appear at the front of his mind.

'Ignis Draconis.' Harry didn't know what the words meant, but at the same time, they felt so familiar.

'Ignis Draconis.' They continued to echo inside his mind.

Meanwhile, in the outside world, something was changing.

Vernon was busy choking his nephew in a fit of rage when, all of a sudden, he saw a flash of light and immediately felt an extreme heat forming around his chest.

'Ignis Draconis.' The words resounded inside Harry's mind as the image of the spell became complete.

A fierce ball of fire was conjured on the palm of his hand.

An instant later, a fiery explosion erupted, sending Vernon away from him, engulfed in flames.

Harry could finally feel the sweet air entering his lungs once more, but he no longer had the strength to stay awake.

His body hit the floor and was welcomed by darkness.
