Evelyn sat at her desk, staring blankly at the mountain of paperwork in front of her. The Knight Enterprises project had consumed her entire day. She hadn't realized how much pressure had built up over the past few days until now. Every piece of paperwork felt heavier than the last, the mounting responsibility threatening to crush her. But this wasn't just about work, this was about her mother.
The message from the hospital still burned in her mind, "Your mother's condition has worsened. Please come as soon as possible."
Every minute that passed felt like a dagger in her chest, each tick of the clock dragging her further from where she needed to be. Her mother's health, and the ever-present fear of losing her was more than she could bear. Evelyn could barely focus on her work, the weight of the personal drowning out the professional.
It wasn't long before Mr. Montgomery entered her office, his usual stern expression softer than usual.
"Miss Hart," he said, his voice professional but with a hint of urgency. "Damien Knight from Knight Enterprises is here to discuss the project. I need you to meet him and get the final revisions done. He's expecting them soon."
Evelyn nodded, trying her best to mask her unease. She could feel the world closing in on her. Damien Knight. A flutter ran through her at the mention of his name. She had no idea he would be coming here today. The anxiety made it hard to breathe but she forced herself to focus on the task at hand.
Mr. Montgomery led her into the conference room where Damien was already seated. His back was straight, his suit impeccably tailored, and his presence filled the room. Though he didn't speak, his very demeanor demanded attention. Evelyn's stomach twisted as she noticed the way his eyes briefly flicked toward her, cold and calculating.
"Miss Hart, Mr. Knight", Mr. Montgomery introduced them, but Evelyn barely heard his words. She couldn't stop herself from focusing on Damien's eyes, which were cold, assessing, as though he was measuring her. Sizing her up. She did her best to mask her discomfort.
"Thank you for making time," Damien said, his voice low, deliberate. "I'm sure you've been busy with the proposal, but we're expecting things to move quickly. I need those revisions by tomorrow, Miss Hart."
She opened her mouth to speak, but then stopped herself. Damien Knight was a star client, one whose expectations were unrelenting. Complaining about the tight time frame wouldn't do her any good. His business meant everything to the company, and she couldn't afford to let the deadline slip.
Evelyn nodded, feeling a tightness in her chest. "I understand, Mr. Knight. We'll have them ready for you."
Damien barely looked up from the files on the table as Mr. Montgomery finished the introductions. "I appreciate your time," Damien said again, his voice still cold. "But I'll need the revisions by tomorrow. No exceptions."
Her chest tightened at his tone, but she pushed it down, focusing instead on the matter at hand. "We're on track. I'll make sure they're ready," she said, keeping her voice steady. But even she could hear the strain in it. She wasn't sure she could do this.
The meeting wrapped up, and Evelyn's mind was still reeling. Damien Knight's expectations still hung in the air like a shadow. His coldness, the way he measured her every word was too much. She couldn't breathe.
She quickly gathered her things to leave, but before she could exit the room, Damien's voice stopped her.
"Miss Hart", he said, his gaze sharp as he looked at her over his shoulder. "I trust you'll be on top of this. I don't accept anything less than perfection."
Her heart skipped a beat, a knot forming in her stomach. There was something coldly commanding in his tone that made Evelyn pause. She swallowed hard, nodding once, doing her best to mask the anxiety that was now building inside her.
"Of course, Mr. Knight," she said, and with that, she turned and walked out of the conference room, leaving him to continue with his business.
Evelyn walked quickly back to her desk, her thoughts still racing. The Knight Enterprises task was already overwhelming but now, her mother's deteriorating health added a layer of urgency to everything. She couldn't ignore the hospital's calls. She had to go.
At the hospital, things were far worse than she had anticipated. Evelyn rushed to the ICU, her heart pounding in her chest. She could barely breathe. The room was quieter than usual, the beeping of the machines growing slower, more erratic. She was met by the cold gaze of Dr. Carter, his face grim.
"Miss Hart," Dr. Carter said quietly, stepping toward her. "I'm afraid there's nothing more we can do. Your mother… her condition has worsened significantly. We don't expect her to last much longer."
Evelyn's body felt numb as the words hit her like a tidal wave. She couldn't breathe. The thought of losing her mother, the person who had always supported her was unbearable. Her heart ripped apart and she fought to keep her emotions in check. But it was impossible.
"No… no", Evelyn whispered, taking a shaky step back. "There has to be something you can do. Please."
The doctor shook his head, his expression apologetic. "I'm so sorry, Miss Hart. We've done everything we can. The only thing left now is to make her comfortable."
Her knees buckled and she fell into the chair beside her mother's bed. She reached out, taking her mother's fragile hand in both of hers, her tears falling freely now. "Mom, please hold on," she begged, her voice breaking. "Please, stay with me."
But her mother's breathing was becoming more shallow, each inhale slower than the last. The tension in the room was unbearable, the silence between the beeps of the machines almost suffocating. Evelyn could barely think, all she could focus on was her mother's face, the way her skin was pale, almost lifeless.
The minutes dragged on, and Evelyn's tears fell silently, her breath coming in sobs as she clung to her mother's hand. Her chest ached, the reality of it sinking in slowly. Then, her mother's chest rose one final time, before it fell flat, and the machines let out a long, soft beep. Evelyn froze.
She squeezed her mother's hand, but there was no response. The room was still, the silence deafening.
"No… Mom?" Evelyn's voice trembled, but it was too late. She squeezed her eyes shut, her chest tight with grief. The tears came, but there was no escaping the truth.
Evelyn sat in stunned silence for a moment, her heart breaking. Her world fell apart in that instant. She had lost the one person who had always been her anchor, the person who had fought for her, believed in her.
Hours later, when Evelyn returned home, the house was empty, and her father was nowhere to be found. She sank into a chair, the weight of the day crashing down on her. The pain of losing her mother was still so raw. The house felt hollow. Empty. Just like her life.
She quickly sat at her desk, turning on her laptop to finish the Knight Enterprises revisions, but her hands were trembling. She couldn't concentrate. How could she? Her mother was gone, and Damien Knight's demands echoed in her mind.
"Perfection," he had said.
But how could she deliver perfection when her entire world was falling apart? How could she focus on the deadline, on the work that felt so trivial, when the loss of her mother weighed heavier than anything else?
Evelyn sat there for hours, her mind a blur. Damien Knight's words still rang in her head, but everything felt irrelevant now. The reality of her mother's death consumed her and she couldn't escape it.
