When the applause finally died down and the students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang had taken their seats, Professor Dumbledore rose once more.
"My dear students and honored guests," he began, "this year, Hogwarts has the great privilege of hosting the Triwizard Tournament."
The Great Hall immediately grew quiet.
"The Triwizard Tournament was first established over seven hundred years ago as a friendly competition between the three largest schools of magic in Europe: Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang."
"Each school will be represented by a single champion. Those champions will face three magical tasks designed to test their magical skill, their courage, their intelligence, and their ability to overcome danger."
The students listened in complete silence.
"The champion who earns the highest score at the end of the Tournament will receive the Triwizard Cup — and with it, the honor of being named Triwizard Champion, bringing everlasting glory to their school."
Excited whispers immediately broke out. Dumbledore raised one hand, and the Hall fell silent again.
"In the past, the Tournament was discontinued because the death toll became unacceptably high." Several students visibly paled.
"However, after lengthy discussions between the Ministry of Magic and the three participating schools, it has been decided that the Tournament may once again take place."
He gestured toward the High Table. "Before I continue, allow me to introduce two Ministry officials who have devoted many months to organizing this event." He turned toward the first wizard.
"Mr. Ludo Bagman, Head of the Department of Magical Games and Sports."
Bagman stood immediately, giving the students a cheerful wave and a broad grin before sitting back down to enthusiastic applause.
"And Mr. Barty Crouch, Head of the Department of International Magical Cooperation."
Crouch rose with his usual stiff posture, inclined his head politely toward the students, and took his seat once more.
Dumbledore walked over to an ancient wooden goblet standing upon a stool, blue-white flames flickering peacefully inside it.
"This," he said, "is the Goblet of Fire. It is an exceptionally powerful magical object and an impartial judge."
He rested one hand lightly on the edge of the stool.
"Tomorrow evening the Goblet will be placed in the Entrance Hall, where it will remain for twenty-four hours."
"Any student who wishes to become their school's champion need only write their name and school upon a piece of parchment and place it into the Goblet."
"The following evening, the Goblet will return the names of three champions — one from Beauxbatons, one from Durmstrang, and one from Hogwarts."
The excitement in the Hall became impossible to contain. Dumbledore waited patiently before speaking again.
"There is, however, one final matter. On the advice of the Ministry of Magic, I have drawn an Age Line around the Goblet. No student under the age of seventeen will be able to cross it."
Groans echoed throughout the Hall. Fred and George looked particularly disappointed.
Dumbledore's expression became serious.
"I also ask every one of you to think very carefully before submitting your name. Once the Goblet of Fire has chosen its champions, there is no turning back."
"The chosen champion enters into a binding magical contract — they are required to compete and cannot withdraw. So I ask you... do not offer your name unless you are fully prepared to face everything the Tournament demands."
Silence lingered for several moments before conversations exploded throughout the Great Hall once more.

The next evening, the Goblet of Fire stood in the Entrance Hall. A thin blue Age Line surrounded the ancient goblet, its blue-white flames dancing steadily as students crowded around to watch.
Only those who were seventeen or older were permitted to cross the line and submit their names.
Naturally, that did little to discourage Fred and George Weasley.
"I still say it'll work," Fred whispered.
"It has to," George replied, pulling a small vial from his pocket.
The twins each swallowed a mouthful of the Aging Potion they had spent weeks perfecting. Ron stared in amazement. "Blimey..."
"Go on!" someone shouted.
The twins grinned at one another before confidently stepping over the Age Line.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened.
Then the fire flashed. An invisible force hurled both brothers backward through the air, and they landed in a heap several feet away as long white beards burst from their chins.
The Hall erupted with laughter. Fred and George scrambled to their feet, glaring at one another.
"It's your fault!"
"My fault? You brewed the potion!"
Hermione snapped her book shut with a satisfied smile. "I told you so."
Victor glanced at the twins before quietly sighing.
'Interesting...'
The magic wasn't checking their physical age. The Aging Potion had changed their bodies, yet the Age Line had still recognized them as underage.
'So it isn't fooled by appearance.'
Victor's eyes lingered on the shimmering golden line.
'I wonder...'
His situation was different. His body had genuinely matured through magic rather than temporary transfiguration or a potion.
Whether the Age Line judged physical age, magical age, or something deeper, he
couldn't tell from watching alone.
'I'll test it later,' he decided. 'When no one else is around.'
