Chapter 12 - The Breakthrough

Christina looks at the box in Andrew's hands. It's filled with trinkets from the years he spent making her feel small. Then she thinks of Liam, who didn't ask her to change, didn't ask her to stay broken, but simply moved his entire world so she wouldn't have to face hers alone.

"You're right about one thing, Andrew. He did find me when I was broken. But he didn't try to keep me that way. You're the only one here who needs me to stay small so you can feel big." Christina said

His "humbled" expression twitches. The anger flashes in his eyes the familiar, sharp edge that Christina finally recognizes for what it is.

You'll regret this. When he leaves you for the next 'adventure,' don't come crawling back to the only person who actually stood by you." Andrew replied.

"That's the difference, Andrew. I'm not crawling anymore. I'm hiking. And I'm doing it with someone who doesn't need me to be lost to feel like a man." Christina said softly.

Christina laid her back against the bed, the screen of her phone glowing like a weapon in the dark room. A text from Andrew popped up: "I saw your post. Are you alone? Christina, you know you get anxious when you're isolated. You're spiraling. Just come to me tonight, we can fix this."

"I'm not spiraling. I'm landing." Christin Whispering, She hits the 'Call' button. He answers on the first ring.

"Chris? Thank God. I've already started dinner. How fast can you get " Andrew said

"I'm not coming back, Andrew, not to the apartment, and not to this version of us." Christina replied.

"You're being dramatic. Is this about that guy I saw in your tagged photos? Liam? He looks like a distraction, Chris, He doesn't know you. He doesn't know how much work you are doing." Andrew asked annoyingly.

"That's the thing, Andrew. With him, I'm not 'work.' I'm just... me. And for the first time, I actually like the person he's looking at." Christina, A calm smile touches her lips.

"You're making a mistake, You'll be calling me in a week when the loneliness sets in." Andrew said angrily.

"No. I'm not hanging up because I'm angry. I'm hanging up because I'm done. I'm choosing the 'forced presence' of my own life over the noise of yours." Christina replied

"Christina, wait…" Andrew said

"Goodbye, Andrew. I hope you find whatever it is you're looking for in someone else's phone. Because you won't find it in mine anymore." Christina said with full assurance.

She pulls the phone away from her ear. Her thumb hovers over his contact card, She taps Delete Contact. Then, she goes to her settings and hits Block This Caller. There is no lightning bolt, no grand orchestral swell. Just a profound, hollow silence that is immediately filled by the sound of the rain hitting the roof.

She sets the phone face down on the floor. For the first time in three years, she isn't waiting for a vibration or an apology. She stands up, walks to the window, and looks out into the dark, wild trees, ready for whatever the storm brings.

The two men are a study in opposites. Andrew stands in a tailored wool coat, clean-shaven and smelling of expensive cologne the image of urban curated control. Liam is damp, wind-burned, and wearing a faded flannel over a thermal shirt, smelling of pine and the long road from Whistler.

Andrew's eyes lock onto Liam's duffel bag. A sneer curls his lip.

"So, this is the 'mountain man'? You look like you took a wrong turn at a lumber camp. Tell me, do you always move into women's lives this fast, or is Christina just a special project for you?" Andrew asked

Liam stopped, He didn't drop his bag. He doesn't puff out his chest. He stands with the quiet, immovable gravity of the peaks he just left.

"I'm not here to play a game with you, Andrew. I'm just here for her." Liam replied

"See? He's simple. He doesn't understand you, Chris. He thinks life is just a straight line from A to B. He has no idea about our history, the layers, the things we've survived together." Andrew Laughed sharply, turning to Christina

Christina steps forward. For years, she had stood behind Andrew, or beside him as a shadow. Now, she steps directly into the space between them, her back to Liam and her face inches from Andrew's.

"You're right, Andrew. You and I have 'layers.' But they weren't layers of love, they were layers of debt and every 'nice' thing you did was an invoice you expected me to pay later with my silence or my spirit. You didn't stand by me; you stood on me." Christina replied

"Christina, be rational. This guy is a stranger. I'm your foundation." Andrew said

"No. You're an anchor-weight, Andrew. You were designed to keep me from drifting, but all you did was keep me from moving at all." Christina corrected him

She turns slightly, glancing at Liam.

"He isn't a 'project.' And I'm not 'broken.' I'm a woman who finally remembered she can walk. And Liam is the only person who hasn't tried to tell me which direction to go." Christina said.

Andrew looks at Liam, hoping to find a flicker of jealousy or anger he can exploit. But Liam just looks at Christina with a quiet, steady pride. There is no "man-to-man" posturing because Liam knows the battle isn't between him and Andrew it's between Christina and her past.

"You can stay here and talk about the past all night if you want. But the sidewalk is public property, and the future is private. We're going inside now." Liam said to Andrew, his voice calm

"Chris, wait…"Andrew said Desperate, reaching for her arm

"Don't touch me. You said I'd regret this? The only thing I regret is not seeing the view from outside your shadow sooner. Go home, Andrew. There's nothing left for you to manage here." Christina Pulls away with a sharp, final grace.

Christina reaches back and takes Liam's hand. The warmth of his skin is a physical contrast to the cold rain. She leads him toward the door, taking the lead for the first time in her life.

As the glass door of the lobby clicks shut, locking Andrew out in the rain, the sound echoes like a gavel. The silence is thick and sweet. Liam sets his bag down and looks at her, truly seeing her.

 "You okay?" Liam asked Christina

"I've never been better. But you... you moved to the city for this drama?" Christina replied with a breathless laugh escaping her.

"I'd move to a desert for you, Christina. But a bed with a view of a brick wall sounds like a better start." Liam replied

They turn together toward the elevator, leaving the street, the rain, and the ghost of Andrew behind them.
