Chapter 65 - Chapter 65: Regional Outposts Wave

Chapter 65: Regional Outposts Wave

The decision came three weeks later.

I stood in the Kaer Morhen great hall, using the Guild Network Vision ability I'd discovered during the financial crisis. The system allowed me to perceive through Heart Crystals—seeing what they saw, feeling the connections between them. Four points of light in my awareness, spanning the Northern Kingdoms.

"Four isn't enough. When war comes, we need coverage everywhere. Evacuation routes require intermediate positions. Intelligence gathering requires local presence. Four major outposts leave too many gaps."

The solution had been forming since the revenue crisis resolved. Not more major outposts—those required significant investment and full operational teams. Something smaller. Regional positions with minimal staffing, serving as coordination points rather than independent operations.

"You want to establish six more locations," Viktor said, reviewing my proposal via message crystal. "Simultaneously."

"Regional outposts. Smaller properties, one or two members each. Coordinators rather than full teams."

"The cost?"

"Forty crowns per location average. Two hundred forty total." I'd calculated obsessively. "We have one hundred ninety-one crowns. The Kaer Morhen payment isn't due for three months. If we can generate the difference through operations..."

"You're spending money we don't have on expansion we haven't proven we need."

"I'm positioning for a war that's coming whether we're ready or not. Regional coverage means evacuation routes. It means intelligence presence. It means the ability to respond anywhere instead of just four cities."

The silence stretched. Viktor understood war preparation better than most—his military background included strategic positioning that civilians never considered.

"Which cities?"

"Maribor, Ellander, Carreras, Gors Velen, Tretogor, Ard Carraigh." I'd selected them with careful attention to geography. "Each one fills coverage gaps. Each one provides staging point for potential evacuation or response. Together with the four major outposts, they create a web covering eighty percent of the Northern Kingdoms."

"And the staffing?"

"Eight members total. One per location, with Ellander and Gors Velen getting two each due to strategic importance." I'd mapped the assignments already. "They function as coordinators—managing local contractors, gathering intelligence, maintaining guild presence without full operational capability."

"That spreads us thin."

"We're already thin. This makes thin useful."

The property acquisitions happened over four weeks.

Maribor first—a converted stable near the city's merchant district. The building was small but secure, positioned well for trade route access. Cost: thirty-five crowns, below my projections.

[REGIONAL OUTPOST: MARIBOR]

[Property Cost: 35 crowns]

[Heart Crystal: Installed]

[Assigned Member: Jorin (coordinator)]

Ellander second—a cottage near the Temple of Melitele, chosen for its proximity to the healing knowledge concentrated there. Two members assigned due to the temple's potential value during crisis situations.

[REGIONAL OUTPOST: ELLANDER]

[Property Cost: 42 crowns]

[Heart Crystal: Installed]

[Assigned Members: Aldric, Helena (medical/administrative coordination)]

Carreras and Gors Velen followed in rapid succession. Tretogor—Redania's secondary city—required the most expensive property at fifty crowns, but its position made the investment worthwhile. Ard Carraigh completed the expansion, giving coverage in Kaedwen beyond Kaer Morhen itself.

[REGIONAL OUTPOST EXPANSION: COMPLETE]

[Total Properties: 6]

[Total Cost: 240 crowns]

[Heart Crystals Installed: 6]

[Network Total: 10 nodes]

The treasury went negative. One hundred ninety-one crowns minus two hundred forty crowns equaled negative forty-nine crowns—debt that required immediate attention.

But the network was worth the debt.

Ten Heart Crystals. Ten points of light in my awareness when I activated Guild Network Vision.

The connections formed a web across the Northern Kingdoms—major outposts in Oxenfurt, Novigrad, Vizima, and Vengerberg anchoring the corners, regional positions filling the spaces between. I could perceive through any crystal, sense members within two hundred kilometers of any node, teleport between any locations.

[GUILD NETWORK: EXPANDED]

[Total Nodes: 10]

[Coverage: Approximately 80% of Northern Kingdoms]

[Teleportation Grid: Fully operational]

[Member Locator Range: 200km from any crystal]

[Network Vision: Active (all nodes accessible)]

"This is unprecedented," Mira said when I demonstrated the capability. We stood in Oxenfurt's basement, the Heart Crystal pulsing with gentle light. "No organization has ever had this kind of reach."

"Sorceresses have portals."

"Sorceresses have individual transportation. You have a network—systematic, accessible to multiple people, covering territory rather than points." She studied the crystal with fascination she'd developed over years of observing my unexplainable resources. "How is this possible?"

"Resources I can't fully explain." The familiar deflection. "What matters is what we do with it."

"What do we do with it?"

"We survive the war that's coming. When Nilfgaard invades—and they will invade—we have evacuation routes through every regional position. We have intelligence gathering in every major population center. We have the ability to concentrate force anywhere within the network in hours rather than days."

"You're building for war that might not come."

"The intelligence reports were clear. The Northern Kingdoms ignored them, but the evidence exists. Nilfgaard is preparing invasion on a scale nobody wants to acknowledge." I moved toward the stairs leading up from the basement. "We'll be ready when they finally believe it."

That evening, I used teleportation to visit each new regional outpost.

Maribor first—small but functional, Jorin settling into coordinator role with the adaptability that had made him valuable during the convoy ambush years ago. His reports were already generating useful intelligence about trade route activity.

Ellander second—Aldric and Helena establishing relationships with Temple of Melitele's healers. The medical knowledge concentrated there would be invaluable during wartime.

Carreras, Gors Velen, Tretogor, Ard Carraigh—each visit brief but confirming that the investments were paying off. Members adapting to new roles, local contacts forming, guild presence establishing in communities that had never seen organized adventurer operations.

[TELEPORTATION LOG]

[Jumps Completed: 10]

[Energy Expended: 2,000/2,000]

[Recovery Required: Full rest cycle]

The energy depletion was significant—ten jumps in one day exceeded sustainable limits. But the verification was necessary. Each crystal functioned properly. Each coordinator understood their responsibilities. The network worked.

"You look exhausted," Viktor observed when I materialized in Novigrad late that night, having completed the circuit.

"Ten teleportations. The energy cost accumulates."

"Was it worth it?"

"Ask me in eighteen months. When Nilfgaard crosses the borders and we're the only organization prepared to respond."

He didn't argue. The war preparations had convinced him even if he didn't share my certainty about timing.

The debt remained—negative forty-nine crowns that required immediate attention. But the infrastructure was built. The network existed. Whatever came next, the guild could respond.
