Chapter 41: Economic Golden Age Begins

POV: Corwyn Darke

The harbor reached peak efficiency in the spring of 113 AC.

I stood on the main watchtower, watching the orchestrated chaos below. Twenty-two ships at anchor or docked, cargo flowing through warehouses with mechanical precision, merchants conducting business in the expanded market district. Every berth occupied, every worker employed, every system functioning exactly as designed.

[ 📈 HARBOR STATUS: MONTH 6 ]

[ SHIPS SERVICED: 22 (CAPACITY) ]

[ GROSS REVENUE: 3,000 GOLD ]

[ VELARYON SHARE (60%): 1,800 GOLD ]

[ NET REVENUE: 1,200 GOLD ]

[ EFFICIENCY RATING: 98% ]

[ STATUS: OPTIMAL ]

Twelve hundred gold monthly from the harbor alone. Combined with mining operations producing six hundred gold, and the new weapons export trade adding four hundred more, House Darke now commanded over two thousand gold in monthly revenue.

"From forty-three gold annual income to two thousand monthly. In less than three years."

The transformation still amazed me when I allowed myself to consider it. But amazement was luxury—there was always more to build, more to secure, more to prepare.

"The Myrish traders arrived at dawn," Mira Waters reported, joining me on the tower. "They've requested priority docking for their next six voyages. Willing to pay premium rates."

"Evaluate their cargo types. If they're carrying goods that complement our existing traffic, grant the request. If they'd create congestion with current clients, negotiate reduced frequency."

"Yes, my lord." She made notes in the ledger she carried everywhere now. "The warehouse expansion is complete. Capacity increased by forty percent."

"Good. That should handle growth for the next eighteen months. After that, we'll need to consider a second harbor facility entirely."

POV: Maester Harlan

The treasury reports showed wealth that would have seemed fantasy two years prior.

Harlan spread the documents across Lord Corwyn's desk, organizing figures that told the story of unprecedented growth. Total treasury: twelve thousand gold dragons. Monthly income: twenty-two hundred gold after all expenses. Reserve funds: eight thousand gold designated for emergency use.

"We're one of the wealthiest houses in the Crownlands," Harlan said. "Not merely surviving—thriving beyond any reasonable projection."

"Reasonable projections assumed conventional governance." Lord Corwyn reviewed the figures without visible emotion. "Wealth is tool, not goal. Show me the infrastructure allocation."

Harlan produced the relevant documents. "You've designated five thousand gold for major projects. Warehouse expansion—complete. Road improvements connecting all territories—seventy percent complete. Market district renovation—beginning next month. Housing construction for population growth—ongoing."

[ 💰 INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT ]

[ WAREHOUSE EXPANSION: 800 GOLD (COMPLETE) ]

[ ROAD NETWORK: 1,200 GOLD (70% COMPLETE) ]

[ MARKET DISTRICT: 1,500 GOLD (PENDING) ]

[ HOUSING DEVELOPMENT: 1,500 GOLD (ONGOING) ]

[ TOTAL ALLOCATED: 5,000 GOLD ]

[ REMAINING TREASURY: 7,000 GOLD ]

"The housing is most urgent," Lord Corwyn said. "Population is approaching five thousand, and we're running short of quality accommodations. Workers who sleep in crowded conditions work less efficiently and spread disease more easily."

"The construction crews are working at capacity, my lord. We could hire additional workers, but that risks quality control."

"Then pay premium wages to attract experienced builders from other regions. Quality matters more than speed, but we need both."

POV: Captain Thoros (Merchant)

Duskhollow Harbor had become Thoros's favorite port of call.

The Gulltown merchant had been trading for thirty years, visiting harbors across Westeros and beyond. He'd seen the best and worst of maritime facilities—the efficient and the corrupt, the welcoming and the hostile.

Duskhollow was unlike anything else.

"Priority docking confirmed, Captain." The harbor clerk checked his ledger with practiced efficiency. "Berth Seven, as requested. Your regular warehouse space is available. Customs processing will be complete within two hours of cargo offloading."

"Two hours." Thoros shook his head in amazement. "In King's Landing, that takes two days."

"Lord Darke values efficiency." The clerk stamped the relevant documents. "Your account shows credit from previous voyages. Would you like that applied to this visit's fees?"

"Yes. And please convey my regards to Lord Darke. His harbor has made my business considerably more profitable."

Thoros walked the docks afterward, observing systems that seemed designed by someone who understood commerce from the inside. Numbered berths eliminated confusion. Posted rate schedules prevented arbitrary fee extraction. Standardized cargo handling reduced damage and delay.

"Someone built this who actually knows how trade works. That's rare among nobles."

He'd spread word among his merchant contacts—Duskhollow Harbor was worth the slightly longer route. The efficiency savings more than compensated for extra sailing time. Within a year, half his regular clients had started routing through Lord Darke's facilities.

POV: Corwyn Darke

The merchant relationships were proving as valuable as the physical infrastructure.

I spent evenings reviewing reports from the harbor master, tracking which traders used our facilities regularly, which had expanded their business through our services, which might be persuaded to increase their commitment.

[ 📊 MERCHANT NETWORK STATUS ]

[ REGULAR CLIENTS: 47 SHIPS ]

[ OCCASIONAL CLIENTS: 31 SHIPS ]

[ EXCLUSIVE CONTRACTS: 12 HOUSES ]

[ SATISFACTION RATING: 94% ]

[ REFERRAL RATE: HIGH ]

"Lord Massey's trade factor inquired about permanent office space," Mira reported during our evening review. "They're considering relocating their Crownlands operations entirely to Duskhollow."

"Offer favorable terms. Having a noble house's commercial operations based here adds legitimacy and attracts others." I made notes for follow-up. "What about the Pentoshi consortium?"

"Still negotiating. They want exclusive rights to the eastern berths during peak season. I've countered with priority access without exclusivity."

"Good. Never grant exclusivity—it creates resentment among other clients and limits our flexibility."

The wealth continued flowing in, each month's revenue exceeding the last as word spread and efficiency improved. But wealth without purpose was merely numbers on a ledger. Every gold piece needed to serve the larger goal: building strength sufficient to survive what was coming.

"Allocate an additional thousand gold to the military budget," I told Mira. "We're accelerating recruitment. I want three hundred soldiers by year's end."

"That's ambitious, my lord. The Training Grounds can handle the volume?"

"The Training Grounds can handle anything we send them. That's what they were built for."
