Chapter 59: Battle of Crab Bay - Part 1

POV: Soldier Jorik

The shield wall held perfectly.

Jorik stood in the front rank, shield locked with the men beside him, spear braced for the impact that was coming. The pirates who'd survived the arrow storm were scrambling toward the docks—nowhere else to go, ships behind them under attack, death raining from the walls.

"Brace!"

The first pirates hit the wall and bounced off like waves against stone. Jorik's spear found a throat, withdrew, found a belly, withdrew. The training took over—no thought, just action, the endless drilling transformed into deadly efficiency.

[ ⚔️ PHASE 2: DOCK ENGAGEMENT ]

[ SHIELD WALL STATUS: HOLDING ]

[ ENEMY PRESSURE: MODERATE ]

[ FRIENDLY CASUALTIES: MINIMAL ]

[ ENEMY CASUALTIES: ESCALATING ]

The pirates fought desperately, but desperation wasn't discipline. They came in waves, uncoordinated, each man attacking individually while Jorik's formation moved as a single organism. Step forward, thrust, step back, reset. The man on his left covered his exposed side; he covered the man on his right. No gaps, no breaks, just relentless mechanical killing.

"They're breaking!" someone shouted.

True. The pirates at the back were trying to retreat, pushing against those still pressing forward. The formation collapsed into chaos as terror overcame aggression.

"Hold formation! Let them run!"

POV: Corwyn Darke

The battle had become exactly what I'd planned—a systematic destruction of an enemy who'd expected easy victory.

[ 📊 BATTLE ANALYSIS: PHASE 2 ]

[ ENEMY KILLED: 67 ]

[ ENEMY WOUNDED: 40+ ]

[ ENEMY ROUTING: SIGNIFICANT ]

[ FRIENDLY KILLED: 3 ]

[ FRIENDLY WOUNDED: 12 ]

[ BATTLE PROGRESS: FAVORABLE ]

From the tower, I could see the entire engagement. The shield wall held the dock approaches like a cork in a bottle, killing anyone who tried to force through. Archers continued picking off targets at range—anyone who tried to organize resistance died with an arrow through their eye. The pirates were trapped between our wall and the sea, dying in ever-increasing numbers.

"My lord." A runner arrived, breathing hard. "Patrol boats report two enemy ships captured, one disabled. The others are trying to flee."

"Let them flee. I want the pirates on shore, not chasing ships we might not catch." I pointed toward the beach where survivors were clustering. "Signal the cavalry. Time to end this."

POV: Captain Rykker (Cavalry Commander)

The charge was almost anticlimactic.

Rykker led fifty riders around the warehouse district, emerging onto the beach where perhaps a hundred pirates had clustered in confused desperation. They saw the cavalry coming and scattered—some toward the water, some toward the town, most simply standing in shock as mounted warriors thundered toward them.

"Surrender and live!" Rykker bellowed. "Fight and die!"

Some fought. They died quickly, cut down by horsemen who'd trained for exactly this kind of engagement. Most threw down weapons, falling to their knees with hands raised.

[ ⚔️ PHASE 3: CAVALRY ENGAGEMENT ]

[ ENEMY ROUTED: COMPLETE ]

[ SURRENDERS: 70+ ]

[ RESISTANCE: MINIMAL ]

[ PHASE STATUS: CONCLUDING ]

The battle was over. What remained was cleanup—securing prisoners, treating wounded, counting dead. Rykker directed his riders to encircle the surrender zone while infantry moved forward to bind captives.

"That's their commander," one of his men pointed. A large man in better armor than the others, bleeding from a shoulder wound, staring at the ground in obvious shock.

"Secure him separately. Lord Darke will want to speak with him."

POV: Corwyn Darke

I descended from the tower as the fighting ended, walking through a battlefield that had transformed from combat zone to processing area in minutes.

Bodies lay scattered across the beach and dock approaches—mostly pirates, a few of my soldiers who'd fallen in the shield wall engagement. The wounded were being triaged, the dead marked for collection, the prisoners herded into groups based on apparent rank and condition.

"Casualties?" I asked Ser Gareth, who'd emerged from the shield wall with blood on his armor but no visible injuries.

"Twenty-three confirmed dead. Forty-five wounded, none critical so far." Gareth's voice carried satisfaction he didn't try to hide. "Against roughly two hundred fifty enemy killed and ninety captured. Including their commander."

[ 📊 PRELIMINARY BATTLE SUMMARY ]

[ FRIENDLY CASUALTIES: ]

[ - DEAD: 23 ]

[ - WOUNDED: 45 ]

[ - TOTAL: 68 ]

[ ENEMY CASUALTIES: ]

[ - DEAD: 247 ]

[ - WOUNDED: 50+ ]

[ - CAPTURED: 89 ]

[ - ESCAPED (SHIPS): ~60 ]

[ - TOTAL: ~450 ]

[ NAVAL RESULTS: ]

[ - SHIPS CAPTURED: 2 ]

[ - SHIPS SUNK: 3 ]

[ - SHIPS ESCAPED: 3 ]

The numbers confirmed what my eyes had told me—overwhelming victory with minimal friendly losses. The kind of result that came from years of preparation meeting a moment of opportunity.

"Barely a fight," Gareth said. "They thought we were peasants with pitchforks."

"Discipline beats chaos every time." I allowed myself a moment of genuine satisfaction. "Bring me the enemy commander. I want to know everything about remaining Crabfeeder forces before we're done here."
