Her words crashed down like thunder, making Mary's head throb.
For a brief moment, her anger was replaced by worry. Teresa's health had never been good these past few years. If she had really fainted from anger, then her condition must have been serious. Mary's heart tightened. She had to go back first thing tomorrow to see her. Otherwise, she would never be at ease. Her mother might still be lying in bed, unable to get up.
Mary suppressed her anxiety and looked straight at Vanessa, her voice cold and edged with fury. "Mother-in-law, you really are being unreasonable. Your son is already married to me. He has his own family now. On what grounds do you keep demanding money from us? If it's filial payment you want, then it should be based on what the eldest brother's family gives. Whatever they give, we'll give the same."
She paused, her gaze sharp. "Why can't things be fair when you have two sons? Or does this make me wonder whether Ryan is really your biological son?"
