Nothing moved.
The frozen palace held its silence with absolute stillness — no footsteps, no breath, no distant echo of anything living anywhere within the ancient halls. Azraeth crossed the last stretch of cracked marble toward the throne, each step swallowed by a quiet so complete it felt like pressure against his skin, the weight of it heavier than anything the frost-choked forest or the ruined city above had carried.
The throne itself rose at the chamber's far end, ancient and magnificent even buried beneath centuries of frost, and only when he reached the throne itself did the ice begin to crack.
Thin fissures spread outward from the frost-sheeted stone in slow, deliberate lines, the frozen floor fracturing in patterns too precise to be anything but deliberate. A freezing mist poured outward from the throne like living breath, spreading across the chamber in slow, curling waves, and somewhere beyond the palace's shattered windows, the blizzard outside began to intensify, wind rising into a low, mournful howl.
Katabasis opened her eyes, ancient and patient, fixed on him with the unhurried certainty of something that had waited far longer than he had been alive.
She rose from the throne with unnatural grace despite her towering size, pale frost-coated skin visible beneath thick white fur, ancient markings glowing faintly beneath her hide in patterns that pulsed like a heartbeat. Massive antlers of frozen bone and dark ice crowned her head, and the blizzard itself seemed to move with her, a living aura of cold that froze the very air around her presence.

She didn't lunge. She simply vanished.
One instant she stood before the throne; the next, Azraeth felt her claws already closing on his shoulder from behind, though he'd never seen her move at all.
Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Protection
The shield flared an instant before the strike landed, and even through it, the force sent him skidding across cracked marble. Katabasis was already gone again, bouncing off a frozen pillar with impossible momentum, vanishing into the drifting mist before reappearing from an entirely different angle, claws raking for his throat with precision that left no room for a wasted motion.
Azraeth barely turned aside in time, Heat Sense screaming warnings a fraction of a second before each impossible reappearance. She struck again from a frozen statue overhead, using the ancient stone as a launching point, and he rolled clear as her claws shattered the marble where he'd stood, fragments scattering across the throne room floor in a spray of ice and dust. A follow-up strike came from behind an ice-sheeted pillar he hadn't even seen her use, claws grazing his back before he could fully turn, and he answered with a burning counter that caught only empty air — she was already gone again, bouncing off a shattered staircase and vanishing back into the swirling mist.
Indigo Colored Fire — Fire Booster
Flame roared around his feet, and he answered her speed with his own, closing the distance the instant she reappeared rather than waiting for the next vanish. His burning fist connected — barely — grazing her shoulder before she dissolved back into the blizzard's mist, gone before the strike could land clean. She reappeared behind a shattered staircase, using the debris to ricochet directly at him, and he caught the blow on crossed forearms, Heat Thickness dulling what should have shattered bone into something merely bruising.
She fought nothing like the Wendigos above. Every strike targeted precisely — a joint, a gap in his guard, the half-second his weight shifted wrong — and she chained them without hesitation, feinting one direction before vanishing and striking from the opposite side entirely. A third bounce off a broken statue sent her diving low, claws raking for his legs; Azraeth leapt the strike entirely, using her own ricochet-timing against her, and answered from above with a burning heel that caught her across the back before she could recover her footing. She twisted mid-fall, catching herself against a leaning pillar and using it to launch immediately back into the fight, refusing to give him even a heartbeat to press the advantage further.
Azraeth stopped trying to track her movement and started reading the mist itself instead, the faint disturbance it carried a half-second before she used it to vanish. Foresight sharpened against the pattern, and the next time she bounced off a pillar to strike from above, he was already moving before she'd fully committed.
Indigo Colored Fire — Mud Lava
He spread unstable ground beneath the pillar's base an instant before she used it, and the stone shifted just enough to throw off her launch, her strike landing a fraction wide of its mark. Azraeth used the opening, driving a burning knee into her exposed flank — the first clean hit of the fight — and she recoiled with a snarl that cracked ice across the chamber's walls.
She adapted instantly, abandoning the pillars for the ceiling instead, dropping from directly above in an attack that gave no warning at all beyond Heat Sense's desperate flare. Azraeth teleported clear a heartbeat before impact, reappearing across the ruined throne room, and Katabasis was already there again, closing the distance faster than the teleport should have bought him any safety at all. She feinted low, drawing his guard downward, then reversed the strike entirely into a rising claw aimed at his jaw; Foresight caught the reversal a fraction early, and he twisted just enough to take the graze along his cheek rather than the full force of the blow.
Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull
He expanded the ultimate carefully, holding its true scale back and shaping it no larger than the chamber itself could safely contain, a compact blue star blooming above the throne room floor. Gravity bent inward, and even Katabasis's impossible speed faltered against the pull, her next bounce falling short of the pillar she'd aimed for. Azraeth pressed the opening, chaining burning strikes into the half-second her rhythm broke, driving her backward through a wall of ancient ice that shattered entirely under the combined force.
She answered with a full, focused assault the instant the star's pull faded, claws raking in rapid succession from angles that shifted mid-strike, forcing him into pure defense for a long, grinding stretch. Fire Protection absorbed what he couldn't avoid; Heat Thickness dulled the rest into bruises rather than wounds. She bounced off a collapsing pillar to strike from his blind side, and he barely caught the blow on a raised forearm before she'd already vanished again, reappearing behind him with a strike aimed at his spine. He pivoted through it on instinct alone, the claws grazing past close enough to tear his sleeve, and answered with a burning elbow that finally connected against her ribs.
A stray claw finally opened a gash along his ribs, and he pressed a burning palm to it without breaking rhythm.
Indigo Colored Fire — Lava Heal
The wound sealed shut, and he re-engaged immediately, refusing to let her reclaim the fight's rhythm entirely. She met his renewed pressure with a flurry faster than anything before it, precision strikes chaining together with no wasted motion between them, and Azraeth read the pattern through Foresight, meeting redirect with redirect, feint with feint, until the exchange became something closer to a conversation than a battle — each of them speaking in claws and burning fists, neither willing to yield the rhythm to the other.
Indigo Colored Fire — Stellar Pull
A compressed sphere tore from his palm mid-exchange, catching her across the shoulder as she bounced off a shattered staircase, the impact finally staggering her mid-leap. Azraeth used the opening ruthlessly, closing the distance while her momentum still fought to recover, driving a chain of burning strikes into the same wound the compressed sphere had opened. She snarled and answered with a desperate counter, claws catching his forearm hard enough to draw blood even through Heat Thickness's dulling, but the strike came a fraction slower than her earlier precision, the fight finally wearing at her the way it had worn at him.
The palace collapsed further around them with every exchange — pillars cracking, ice walls shattering, ancient statues exploding into frost and stone as strikes meant for each other tore through the throne room's remaining architecture instead, dust and ice mingling in the freezing air above the ruined marble floor. A massive chunk of the ceiling gave way overhead, and both of them used the falling debris without pause, Katabasis ricocheting off a falling slab to strike from an angle the collapse had opened, Azraeth meeting it mid-air with a burning knee that sent them both tumbling through the settling wreckage.
Katabasis fought with everything her impossible speed and precision could offer, but Azraeth had learned her rhythm now, meeting vanish with anticipation, meeting strike with counter, until finally, after one last desperate exchange of claws and burning fists amid the ruined throne room's collapsing architecture, his final blow landed clean through her exposed throat.
Katabasis collapsed.
Azraeth staggered back, chest heaving, staring at her motionless form amid the ruined throne room.
"Huff... huff... ugh... Don't tell me..."
Katabasis's body convulsed, ice cracking audibly across her prone form as something ancient inside her refused to stay still.
Her antlers grew, thickening and lengthening into something far more monstrous than before, dark ice spiraling along the new growth in jagged, threatening ridges. Her white fur thickened into a dense, bristling mane, and layer after layer of hardened black ice began sheathing her frame, plate by plate, sealing over pale skin until the elegant predator Azraeth had fought was gone entirely, replaced by something heavier, darker, and infinitely more oppressive. The blizzard beyond the shattered windows howled louder, ice spreading fresh across walls that had only just begun to crack from the fight before it, the entire throne room groaning under the weight of whatever she was becoming.
Azraeth exhaled, slow and tired, watching the transformation complete itself with grim, exhausted certainty, blood and frost mixing at his feet amid the ruin of a fight he'd genuinely believed was already over.
"Not again..."
