Yuuki had a feeling he was standing on the border between the ordinary and the not-ordinary.
He'd survived in this world he'd assumed had no supernatural phenomena for twelve years. If he ran now, he could still live as the Asagami family's heir—enjoy the life a rich second-generation should.
Even if the news occasionally carried stories that seemed to hide something darker, he could treat them as dinner-table entertainment.
But if he stepped into it on purpose…
Everything would change.
And yet, at the moment he still wanted to do something, the system's notification sounded.
[Fate Power acquired. Fate System reactivated.]
[Current Fate Power remaining: 5]
[Skill levels restored to initial state.]
Yuuki's originally dark eyes took on a faint violet sheen. Flecks of golden light appeared around his body, shimmering in and out of sight.
His thoughts became a little clearer.
[Parallel Processing C-]
[Golden Rule C-]
[Faerie Eyes (Pseudo) C+]
These three skills respectively increased intelligence, improved luck related to money, and allowed him to see through lies to a certain extent.
Yuuki recognized them because not long after he transmigrated, after a certain incident, he'd awakened this so-called Fate System.
At the time, he'd been terrified of the coming bubble collapse, and the system gave him the conditions to survive it.
Paying a certain price, he'd obtained those abilities one after another, using them to gradually seize influence over key company decisions.
His ideals clashed with the elders'. Again and again he overturned critical proposals from major figures in the family—even those from his own father, the head of the household.
Yuuki's standing within the family grew increasingly delicate.
At the same time, because Yuuki's decisions kept proving correct, his influence grew. He intervened more and more, creating value while deepening the rift with others.
With Faerie Eyes as a safeguard, he avoided most crises—but as the years went on, Yuuki found himself unable to trust almost anyone, even his father.
Eventually he simply left the main residence. For a long time he lived in a plain property in Soya Ward in Tokyo with only the maid Tama. After leaving Tama in Mifune City, he lived alone.
Three years ago, once the economic turbulence no longer threatened Asagami's business, Yuuki stopped gaining Fate Power. The skills he had slowly dropped in rank, becoming all but useless once they reached E.
Now he realized it was probably because he'd lost his constant sense of crisis.
In truth, the skills fading hadn't affected much. The greatest threat—the 1993 crisis—had already been resolved. After that, Yuuki could've been perfectly happy living as an ordinary rich heir. He didn't need skills anymore.
Perhaps he kept going simply because he'd grown used to it.
Earlier this year, during a negotiation over land rights in a certain area of Fuyuki City—with an old kimono-wearing man whose body odor was so strong it was almost nauseating—his Faerie Eyes (Pseudo) fell to E, becoming something that existed in name only.
It didn't cause a loss. The negotiation still went smoothly.
But it became a trigger—forcing Yuuki to admit a truth: years of accumulated fatigue had made his mind dull.
Yuuki needed rest.
So, even if it wasn't exactly a peaceful handover, the outcome was the same: Yuuki gave up. He pushed everything back onto his father and used "moving to Mifune City for schooling" as an excuse to take a vacation.
He still hadn't reconciled with his father—might even still be viewed as an enemy—yet because of Yuuki's years of reputation and connections, the family couldn't openly do much.
In short: aside from money far beyond any normal student and the title of "eldest son," there wasn't much to brag about.
Yuuki came alone from Tokyo to Mifune City. He carried so little luggage that even flying wouldn't require checked baggage.
It was quiet.
And that was fine.
"I didn't expect to regain Fate Power at a time like this… No—did it reactivate because I once again faced a life-or-death crisis?"
When he first awakened the system twelve years ago, it was also because he'd encountered a deadly situation. He'd survived, though badly injured—spending nearly a month in the hospital. The system had popped up that very night.
So: when his life was threatened, the system strengthened. When he remained safe for long periods, it weakened.
Hardship brings growth, comfort brings decay… is this system a student of Mencius or something?
"But if that's true—if I keep myself in danger every day, deliberately putting myself in an environment where I could die at any moment—my skill levels wouldn't weaken. They'd rise…"
"I'm an idiot."
Even if he'd grasped how the Fate System worked, honestly, Yuuki wished it would never appear again.
And the Fate System itself was stingy—so minimalist it barely deserved the name. Minimal to the point that it didn't even provide explanations.
Through trial and error, Yuuki had learned: to benefit, he needed to spend points called Fate Power.
He could spend Fate Power to draw from three shops—[Combat Skills], [Support Skills], [Items]—or spend 5 points on a mystery gacha screen that didn't even tell him what prizes were inside.
There were very few skills he could directly choose, and even the best only reached around C-. It reeked of "small fry." Prices were mostly 1 to 5, with combat and items generally more expensive.
The gacha seemed to offer higher-tier skills. Yuuki's only [Parallel Processing C+] had come from a pull.
So—cheap, right?
Then how did he gain Fate Power?
He had no idea.
The first time he got the system, he received only 2 additional points total: one on the day Tokyo property prices crashed, and one the first time he saw Fujino. With the initial 7 points, he pulled once, bought two skills, and that was it.
He picked those two skills because the system gave only names, no descriptions.
Compared to "combat skills" like [Bajiquan (In Name Only) C-] or [Fighting Technique C-]—skills that looked weak and would only increase medical and compensation costs—or items like [Queen Connaught's Purple Mood] and [Damaged Ruin Stone Earring] that made zero sense, at least "Golden Rule" and "Parallel Processing" were readable at a glance.
The Faerie Eyes had been something he figured out by testing—though he couldn't use it constantly. It consumed stamina heavily and might even damage his eyesight.
Reviewing the long-lost skill panel, Yuuki felt a trace of reassurance. But these skills drained stamina continuously while active, so he shut them off one by one. The violet hue faded from his eyes, and the faint golden light around his body dissipated.
"Hm? What's this?"
Below the three skills was something he'd never seen before.
[Exorcism Impulse C+]
What is that? Yuuki's Type-Moon knowledge was basically limited to anime. He had no memory of it.
The skill was darkened. He tried activating it like the others—no response.
He scratched his head.
"A passive skill? Some hidden bonus? Whatever. The important thing is how to solve the crisis in front of me."
He took a breath and thought.
His immediate threat was Souren Araya.
That man had targeted him. He might target Shiki and Fujino next.
Araya was a stone-like person; negotiation wouldn't work. So what about defeating him head-on?
Yuuki had 5 points.
He could buy [Bajiquan (In Name Only) C-]—the one he'd thought was too expensive before.
If he used Bajiquan to launch an aggressive assault and smash Araya's body… how many hits could even a trained body withstand?
…
Yuuki would probably die first.
Then what other skills were there…?
[Throwing (Snow) C-]
[Being Ridden C-]
[Blessing of the Beast C-]…
What are these even supposed to be?!
Yuuki sighed deeply at the barren skill pool and his pitiful Fate Power reserves.
"Then there's only one answer."
He poured all five points into the gacha.
It was just one pull.
