A few miles away from the devastated crater that was once Orochimaru's hideout, Team Kakashi finally took a moment to breathe. Hidden deep within the dense foliage of the Land of Sound, the squad rested in a secure clearing, patching up minor scrapes and replenishing their stamina.
Naruto stood at the edge of the clearing, his eyes scanning the tree line. In his pouch, safely sealed away, sat two of the most valuable prisoners in the history of the hidden villages: Kabuto Yakushi and Sasuke Uchiha. Tucked right beside those scrolls was another crucial prize—a heavy silver ring bearing the kanji for "Void," stripped directly from the ashes of Orochimaru. The Akatsuki ring.
"Listen up," Naruto said, his voice cutting through the quiet rustle of the leaves. He turned to face Kakashi, Yamato, Sai, and Sakura. "The half-hour rest is almost up. Once we move out, we are going at absolute full speed back to Konoha. We are not stopping to set up camp, we are not stopping to eat, and we are not stopping to sleep."
He gestured to the storage scrolls clipped securely to his vest. "We are currently carrying two of the most high-profile prisoners on the continent. The moment word gets out that Orochimaru's base fell, every rat in the underground will come looking for the scraps. Worse, if Itachi Uchiha or any other Akatsuki members get wind that we have Sasuke and an Akatsuki ring, they will intercept us. We cannot take a single risk. Are we clear?"
Kakashi and Yamato nodded in unison, recognizing the sheer tactical necessity of the order. Sakura and Sai silently tightened their gear. They had a long, grueling sprint ahead of them, but with the prize they had secured, failure was not an option.
Hokage's Office
While Team Kakashi left for the mission, the atmosphere in the Hokage's office back in Konoha was decidedly more tense.
Tsunade sat behind her massive oak desk, aggressively rubbing her temples. Spread out before her were the official gate logs and the frantic reports from the Chūnin guards detailing the incident that had occurred just before Team Kakashi's departure. The report explicitly outlined how Naruto had publicly hijacked the mission, outright dismissed Yamato's authority, and declared himself Captain.
Shizune stood off to the side, clutching Tonton nervously. "Lady Tsunade... are you sure Naruto won't get hyper-emotional on this mission? Taking command like that... he's acting so drastically different."
Sitting on the windowsill, Jiraiya let out a hearty, booming laugh. He casually swirled a small ceramic cup of sake in his hand before taking a slow, satisfied gulp.
"Don't sweat it, Shizune," Jiraiya chuckled, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "Naruto was going to take command of that squad whether we liked it or not."
"But to bypass the Hokage's direct chain of command—" Shizune started.
"Naruto does not trust them," Jiraiya interrupted gently, his tone sobering slightly. "And honestly? If I were in his shoes, I wouldn't trust Yamato or Sai blindly either. Sai is Root, and Yamato is an Anbu planted to control him. Kakashi and Sakura are a different story, but I can't even blame the kid if he's holding them at arm's length right now. He has a complicated history with them, and he's been burned by his own team before. Just let it be. Naruto knows how to lead, and I'm certain the results will speak for themselves."
Tsunade let out a heavy sigh, leaning back in her chair. "Well, I agree with you on his tactical capability, Jiraiya. But did the brat really have to make such a massive ruckus right in front of the main gates? In front of a Chūnin team and the gate guards?"
She gestured angrily at the paperwork. "I guarantee word has already traveled to everyone in Konoha. The clan heads and the council are going to try and make a wreckage out of this insubordination. Especially those three old fossils. Shikaku will likely come knocking since he's the Jōnin Commander, and we can't forget the Anbu Commander either."
Jiraiya waved his free hand dismissively. "Relax, Tsunade. You can handle them. We both know Shikaku and Yugao don't have the balls—or the desire—to actually cross you over this."
"Yugao might have to file a formal complaint as Anbu Commander on Yamato's behalf," Tsunade muttered.
"Please," Jiraiya scoffed. "Yugao was Kushina's student. Practically speaking, she's going to quietly agree with whatever Kushina's kid does. And Shikaku? That lazy coward won't raise his voice against you. He fears you with a death stare; he knows you'll plaster him right through a wall if he steps out of line."
"It's not Shikaku and Yugao that I'm worried about, Jiraiya!" Tsunade snapped, her eyes narrowing. "I know they won't say a word. It's Danzo, Koharu, and Homura! Those three fossils will try to weaponize this moment and make a political case against Naruto to leash him again."
Jiraiya simply smiled, taking another sip of his sake. "Then just send Naruto in to deal with them."
Both Tsunade and Shizune froze, staring at the Toad Sage as if he had grown a second head.
"What do you mean, 'deal with them'?" Tsunade demanded.
"You know exactly what I mean," Jiraiya smirked, his eyes gleaming with a hint of dark pride. "If they call a council meeting to reprimand him, send the boy in. I'd wager Naruto's current killer intent will be more than enough to scare the wrinkles right off those two elders. And as for Danzo? Naruto can be very creative when he makes a threat. If he handled Yamato the way the report says he did, I'm sure he can make Danzo sweat quite a bit."
Shizune swallowed hard, stepping forward. "Lord Jiraiya... do you know why he switched his personality? Why he turned so cold towards everyone?"
Jiraiya looked down at his sake cup, his smile fading into a look of quiet respect.
"From what I learned from Gamakichi and the toads," Jiraiya explained softly, "during those ten days Naruto spent resting in the village, he was summoning them to train in secret. After a bit of discussion with the toads, he admitted something. He told them that, right now, he cannot afford to blindly trust anybody in this village except for us."
Jiraiya looked back up, meeting Tsunade's eyes. "He said he's going to test everyone. This cold, calculating personality? It's his filter. He's pushing them to see who actually respects him as a shinobi, and who just sees him as the Nine-Tails Jinchūriki they have to manage. He's done playing the fool."
Author's Note
Hey everyone!
I need a little help from you all. Since I'm not much of an artist, I'd really appreciate it if you could share or comment pictures of outfits you think would suit the characters.
I'm especially looking for outfit ideas for:
Naruto
Hinata
Ino
Temari
And any other characters you'd like to see redesigned.
Feel free to post as many references as you want. Casual clothes, mission outfits, formal wear, seasonal outfits, or anything else you think fits their personalities.
Your suggestions will really help me visualize the characters and make the story even better.
Thanks for all the support, and I can't wait to see your ideas!
