Chapter 96 - More Backup Options, A Deadly Reward

"Naruto, when are you planning to deal with that Tenzo guy?"

Naruto was just about to select Yagura's icon in the Mirror World interface when Kurama's deep voice boomed across the space. The fox clearly believed this Wood Style ninja would meet a tragic end.

Thinking of Moonlight Hayate, who had just left—whose fiancée Naruto had recently killed—Kurama couldn't imagine Naruto letting someone like Tenzo monitor him without retaliation.

Gyūki (Kokuō) lowered its head and muttered:

"Seriously… Konoha's treatment of Jinchūriki is strange.

In Iwagakure, people may dislike Jinchūriki, but they're not this extreme.

Old Rōshi and Han could argue with Ōnoki whenever they felt like it."

Isobu, however, simply spoke with a calm expression:

"Honestly, this isn't even bad compared to Kirigakure.

Sometimes they are far worse.

Take the Six-Tails' Jinchūriki, Utakata—his situation was miserable.

Before Yagura and I were put under genjutsu, Utakata's teacher worked tirelessly to find a way to free his student from being a Jinchūriki.

He even researched ways to sever the tailed beast while keeping Utakata alive.

But the village twisted his intentions—

They fabricated rumors that the teacher wanted to kill Utakata and seize Saiken's power.

In the end, Utakata, misunderstanding everything, killed his own master with his own hands."

Gyūki tilted its equine head.

"Why would the Mist do that!?"

Isobu's tone turned bitter:

"To keep the Six-Tails, obviously.

If Utakata's teacher failed to save him, they feared he might kill the boy out of despair—

and death is a kind of release for a Jinchūriki, after all.

But if the Jinchūriki dies, the Six-Tails dies with him, and Kirigakure loses a tailed beast."

"…Oh."

Gyūki immediately realized it had asked something unnecessary.

Silence fell over the Mirror World.

A moment later, Naruto finally turned toward Isobu.

"Isobu, I want to know—how far did Utakata's teacher get in his research?"

Isobu was still confused about the sudden mood shift, but answered quickly:

"I heard he traveled to Kusagakure and found a forbidden technique that could keep Utakata alive after extraction.

But I don't know which forbidden jutsu it was."

"Kusagakure?"

Naruto's eyes narrowed sharply.

"Hōzuki Castle… the "Living Corpse Reincarnation" lineage…

Dragon Life Reincarnation (Ryūmyō Tensei)."

He instantly understood which jutsu it had to be.

One of Naruto's long-term plans had been to obtain Chiyo's Reanimation Technique (Self-Reanimation) from Sunagakure, but Isobu's information suddenly opened a new and appealing option.

Kurama, meanwhile, kept a sharp gaze on Naruto.

Seeing him fall silent, Kurama impatiently enlarged the display window with a swipe.

Moments later, Yagura's memories filled the air.

None of them cared about the early parts—Kurama fast-forwarded skillfully until they reached the scene where Obito, Pain, and Konan confronted Yagura.

Surprisingly, although the three arrived together, Pain and Konan immediately withdrew to a distance, showing no intention of fighting.

The moment Obito appeared, Kurama's tails all stood on end—its eyes murderous.

If it could jump through the screen, it would have ripped Obito apart.

Gyūki glanced sideways at Isobu.

"You didn't notice his eyes? They were Rinnegan."

Isobu sounded defeated.

"I had no time to notice… you'll see why in a minute."

And indeed—within moments, both Kurama and Gyūki's expressions hardened.

Yagura, even in partial Tailed Beast Mode, couldn't so much as scratch Obito.

His space-time ninjutsu was simply too hax.

Naruto understood.

In the original timeline, Obito casually toyed with both KCM Naruto and Perfect Jinchūriki Killer Bee using Kamui.

Unless you understood his ability and prepared countermeasures like Konan did, he was virtually invincible—and Konan only failed because Obito used Izanagi as a trump card.

Kurama snarled:

"He even uses Wood Style!?"

Both Sharingan and Mokuton—Obito had inherited the most anti–tailed-beast toolkit imaginable.

On-screen, full Tailed Beast Yagura was instantly bound and crushed as Obito summoned a thicket of enormous, thorny trees—Wood Style: Advent of a World of Flowering Trees (scaled)—forcing Yagura out of transformation and leaving him barely alive.

Obito then warped him into Kamui's dimension.

Inside the pocket dimension, Yagura saw Obito stepping directly into his seal.

Isobu was immediately subdued by Obito's Sharingan.

Above Yagura's head hung a massive phantom Sharingan—the control seal.

From there, the rest was history.

Yagura became the puppet Mizukage who enforced the Bloody Mist era.

And when the genjutsu finally broke, Obito drained his spiritual flame with another illusion—killing him even without physical injury.

Gyūki looked at Isobu with genuine sympathy.

It finally understood just how long Isobu had been enslaved.

Naruto wasn't surprised that Obito had done it—Obito's hatred toward Kirigakure made it predictable.

But there was something he did find puzzling:

Why didn't Obito drag Yagura to the Akatsuki to feed the Ten-Tails?

Naruto had pondered this since the beginning.

He wasn't actually worried Obito would succeed in collecting the beasts—Naruto just needed to prevent the Gedo Statue from obtaining complete chakra sets.

He had wanted to see how much his interference would alter the timeline…

But the result was the same as canon:

Obito still abandoned the Three-Tails.

Which meant—

Obito wasn't in a hurry.

So…

What was Akatsuki's real goal?

Naruto reviewed its members in his mind:

Nagato & Konan: sought peace

Hidan & Kakuzu: one wants bounties, one wants blood

Deidara & Sasori: care only about "art"

Itachi: undercover spy

Kisame: working hard but also secretly spying on Itachi

Obito: wants to recreate a world with Rin

Black Zetsu: literally waiting for Madara to be revived so he can confess he's the true mastermind

Putting them together…

Akatsuki was an organization where almost nobody cared about the Eye of the Moon Plan.

Naruto mentally sighed.

When the playback ended, he opened a new window and selected Tenzo's icon.

"I'm going to test his abilities. Do as you please."

And with that, Naruto vanished.

Kurama's pupils narrowed.

"Isobu—come with us. Gyūki and I will teach you how to fight someone with Sharingan."

Several hours later, Naruto exited the Mirror World and prepared to sleep.

The three beasts didn't need rest—they continued gleefully tormenting puppet opponents.

Naruto had barely lain down when Isobu suddenly shouted from the seal.

"Naruto! Naruto! You won't believe what I just got!!"

Naruto sat up slightly.

"What is it?"

Isobu's voice trembled with excitement.

"Two incredible rewards!

One is Reaper Death Seal…

And the other is…

Eight Gates Released Formation."

Naruto froze.

That was…

actually insane.
