Chapter 149: Gaara, Now Is Not the Time for Your Exit

The world before his eyes seemed to suddenly broaden.

The dense trees receded to both sides, revealing a relatively open forest clearing.

Sunlight was able to spill down more freely, illuminating the scene in the center of the clearing.

The three members of Gaara's squad seemed to have just finished a brief battle.

Kankuro was looting the enemies' corpses, while Temari sat on a tree branch observing the surroundings.

Beneath Gaara's feet, the sand writhed slightly, silently burying and swallowing the traces of battle.

A faint scent of blood and the residue of agitated Chakra still lingered in the air.

Just then, a flurry of panicked, hurried footsteps and cries mixed with terror approached from afar, breaking the silence of the clearing.

Several Ninja wearing Hidden Sand Village headbands, looking wretched and covered in wounds and dirt, rushed out from the depths of the forest like stray dogs, scrambling toward the clearing.

The leading Sand Ninja's face was written with the ecstasy of surviving a desperate situation and a plea for help. He spotted the three "important figures" in the clearing and, as if seeing saviors, shouted with all his might, his voice hoarse and strained:

"Lady Temari! Lord Kankuro! Lord Gaara! Save us! There are Hidden Leaf Village pursuers behind us, they've gone mad! They've killed so many of our people!"

Temari on the branch and Kankuro looting the corpses on the ground both felt their hearts sink, thinking: This is bad!

This idiot!

Temari's expression instantly turned somewhat ugly.

Kankuro also stopped his movements, his brow furrowed deeply.

They knew Gaara all too well.

For this younger brother, who was regarded as a "failed product" by their father, had the One tail Shukaku sealed within him, and possessed an extremely twisted personality, any action or word that might "slight" or "ignore" him could touch his sensitive and dangerous nerves.

Placing the names of "Lady Temari" and "Lord Kankuro" before "Lord Gaara"... to Gaara's ears, this might be an invisible belittlement and neglect.

As if in the seeker's heart, Temari and Kankuro were more important and more worthy of being asked for help first than him!

This was practically dancing wildly in a minefield!

Sure enough, Gaara, who had been standing in the center of the clearing with an expressionless face and arms crossed, reacted the moment he heard the cry for help and the order of the names.

Beneath those deep dark circles, his pale green eyes shifted slightly.

He slowly lowered his crossed arms. The movement seemed ordinary, but it made Temari and Kankuro's hearts leap into their throats.

Gaara didn't look at the wretched, tearful Ninja from his own Village. Instead, he calmly cast his gaze toward the path they had come from, as if waiting for something, or perhaps confirming the position of the pursuers.

Then, he spoke. His voice was low and devoid of ripples, yet it carried a chill that could freeze one's marrow:

"Sand Binding Coffin."

As his words fell.

The mouth of the giant Sand Gourd on Gaara's back suddenly snapped open.

A large amount of dark-colored, fine yellow sand, like a black tide with a life of its own, surged out silently and swiftly.

The yellow sand did not attack the direction of the potential pursuers. Instead, like a tiger smelling blood, it pounced directly toward those several Sunagakure Ninja who had just escaped death and thought they were saved, carrying a violent and suppressed killing intent.

"Wha—What?"

"Lord Gaara?"

"No!"

The ecstasy on the faces of the several Sand Ninja instantly froze, turning into extreme terror and disbelief!

They never imagined that after struggling so hard to escape here and praying for the protection of their Village's powerhouses, what awaited them was not a helping hand, but a lethal attack from their own "important figure"!

They wanted to resist, they wanted to run, but the exhaustion and injuries from being pursued by Hidden Leaf Village, coupled with facing Gaara's sudden, oppressive killing intent, made their bodies stiffen and their reactions slow by half a beat.

Whoosh—!

The speed of the yellow sand was beyond imagination. In an instant, it completely wrapped, entwined, and imprisoned the Sand Ninja, forming several sand spheres that constantly writhed and contracted.

Muffled struggles and desperate whimpers came from inside the sand spheres.

Gaara looked expressionlessly at the spheres that were bulging and trying to break free. He slowly raised his right hand, and then, suddenly clenched his five fingers!

"Sand Waterfall Funeral."

Puff, puff, puff!

Several muffled and tooth-grating sounds of crushing and bursting rang out almost simultaneously.

The Sand Binding Coffins enveloping the Sand Ninja were like tomatoes instantly squeezed by an invisible giant force, extremely compressing and collapsing inward.

Dazzling blood, like burst water bags, suddenly shot and sprayed out from the gaps and bottoms of the sand spheres, staining the surrounding sand and ground red.

The sand spheres stopped writhing and quickly shriveled up. The life force within them vanished without a trace in an instant.

Those Sand Ninja couldn't even leave behind a complete last word. Just like that, with a casual lift of Gaara's hand, they were slaughtered on the spot by their own Village "companion" in the most cruel and bloody manner!

A dead silence fell over the clearing.

There was only the slight rustling sound of the yellow sand slowly flowing back into the Sand Gourd, and the scent of blood in the air that had suddenly intensified several times.

Temari and Kankuro looked at the pools of blood quickly soaking into the sand and the shriveled sand shells on the ground. Their expressions were exceptionally grim, but no one spoke.

They couldn't, and even more so, they didn't dare.

Never mind that they were Gaara's sister and brother; Gaara would not distinguish them from insects.

As if he had only done a trivial little thing, Gaara withdrew his right hand and looked back toward the depths of the forest, the direction from which the Sand Ninja had fled.

The mouth of the Sand Gourd on his back remained open.

Slaughter, to him, was as natural as breathing.

The Hidden Leaf Village pursuers, however, stopped under the large trees and did not enter this field.

They had also seen the scene just now.

Originally, the cat-and-mouse game was meant to draw out other squads from the Hidden Sand Village. They didn't expect to run straight into the big boss.

Naruto stood at the front of the group, locking eyes with Gaara.

"There's no mistake. This kid is the Jinchuriki of that stinking tanuki."

The Nine-Tailed's voice rang out in Naruto's consciousness.

'Yeah, I know.'

No, now is not the time.

Gaara... you still have your "part" to play.

Thinking of this, Naruto already had a decision in his heart.

Slowly but very clearly, he raised his right hand and then waved it toward his companions behind him.

The gesture was clear: Retreat!

This action caused Shikamaru, Sasuke, Neji, and the others in the back to be stunned.

Retreat?

Were twelve of them supposed to retreat without a fight against three people?

But they saw Naruto's unquestionable back and determined gesture, and they also saw Gaara's increasingly dangerous gaze opposite them, as if he would violently attack at any moment.

Shikamaru was the first to react. He immediately barked in a low voice: "Listen to Naruto! Everyone, retreat slowly, stay alert, and don't turn your backs!"

Although the Hidden Leaf Village group felt unwilling or confused, they quickly executed the order and began to retreat silently, increasing the distance from the clearing.

Naruto remained where he was, staring at Gaara until his companions had retreated to a safe enough distance. Only then did he cast one last deep look at Gaara before turning around, his figure merging into the shadows of the forest and disappearing.

Gaara, now is not the time for your exit. Go and turn Hidden Leaf Village upside down!

Only when you've muddied the waters will I have the chance to act!
