Highschool DxD: The Cursed King of Kuoh
S1 Ch 7: Discussion with a Devil
The large Student Council Room was a study in authority. Dark, polished mahogany dominated the room, reflecting the fluorescent overhead lights like still water. The massive desk Sona sat behind seemed less like furniture and more like defensive battlement meant to establish her authority and command. Every book on the shelves was precisely lined up, every pen in its holder, a silent affirmation to the young devil's obsession with control.
Sona's peerage was arrayed around the room: two tense Rooks, a pair of Knights, and a very nervous Bishop. All dressed in their school uniforms, their expressions ranging from mild curiosity to outright suspicion. Sukuna could feel the collective weight of their gaze, but being stared down by a bunch of high school girls was the least intimidating thing he'd dealt with that week.
He leaned back in the plush chair, the leather creaking lightly under his weight. Ura stood like a sentinel behind him, the binder containing his schedule tucked neatly under her arm as she watched the young devils intently.
"So," Sukuna began, his voice laced with mocking fatigue, "are we gonna discuss the discrepancies in my transfer forms? Did I forget to check the box for 'Do you like being harassed by a bunch of supernatural fucking teenagers' or perhaps missed the required essay on 'my clans secrets and abilities'?"
Sona's hands rested flat on the desk. She ignored his sarcasm, her violet eyes steady behind her glasses.
"We can dispense with the formalities, Sukuna-kun," she stated, her voice crisp and professional. "You're not a typical student. The Doumon Clan is one of the oldest and wealthiest in Kyoto, a clan that you were set to take over, and yet you slaughtered an elder without a second thought. So I want you to be honest when I ask you; why did you enroll in Kuoh Academy?"
Sukuna's expression became one that reflected deep wounded concern, while he placed a hand over his heart.
"Why, Miss Shitori, I was invited of course." He exclaimed, his tone purely theatrical. "And after thinking long and hard I became deeply concerned about my academic prospects. I wouldn't want to fall behind in…Modern literature or heaven forbid economics, especially with the way the stock market is looking these days."
A sharp intake of air came from one of the Knights standing near the window. The Rooks both frowned, their shoulders tensing. Clearly they were unaccustomed to being spoken to with such dismissive sarcasm and Sukuna was more than happy to give them a crash course as he flicked his gaze at them confirming their lack of worth in his eyes.
Sona however remained impassive, keeping absolute control over her reactions.
"Your sarcasm is noted. However this is a rather serious matter. Tell me do you intend to cause trouble while attending school?"
Tap Tap Tap
Sukuna tapped his fingers lightly on his chair's armrest.
"Trouble?" He repeated the word as if considering a strange foreign flavor. "Only if someone intends to start trouble with me, or if I become terribly terribly bored." He gave her a wide toothy grin. "Boredom, Miss Shitori, is the true bringer of chaos."
A muscle slightly twitched in Sona's jaw, the only sign of her growing annoyance.
"Tsubaki," Sona commanded, her voice slightly colder. "Give Sukuna his schedule changes and homeroom assignment."
Tsubaki, who had been glaring daggers at Sukuna, stepped forward and placed a single piece of paper on the desk. Sukuna didn't even look at it. He scooped it up with two fingers and handed it off to Ura without breaking eye contact with Sona.
"Handle that, Ura." He ordered without looking as he began to stand up.
"Yes, Master," She responded, tucking it away in her binder.
Sona rose as well mirroring his movement.
"Sukuna-kun let me be clear," Sona said, her voice carrying a subtle, chilling authority. "Kuoh is under the protection of both the Sitri and Gremory clans. I advise you to conduct yourself appropriately during your time here. Chaos and petty violence will not be tolerated."
He just waved his hand dismissively as he turned toward the door.
"Yeah, yeah. Territory, jurisdiction, big words. I heard you the first time."
He took two steps towards the exit, with Ura following close behind him, before he paused and turned his head slightly, locking eyes with the peerage's queen, who was still standing stiffly by Sona's desk.
"Oh by the way," he said, his voice dropping into a murmur. "Lacy blue, nice." He then gave her a slow appreciative thumbs up.
Tsubaki's perfectly controlled expression shattered by his words. She immediately flushed a deep vibrant red while her eyes widened with both shock and embarrassment. She instinctively clamped her knees together.
"W-what?!" was all she could voice as her mind short circuited.
Sukuna just chuckled, a low guttural sound, and exited the room. Ura gave them a small apologetic bow to the red-faced Vice President before following after her master. The heavy wooden door closing behind them.
Silence reigned for a long moment before one of the Rooks could hold it in any longer.
"Hah!" Tsubasa exclaimed but quickly tried to cover her mouth.
Sona pinched the bridge of her nose, as she pushed her glasses up firmly.
"His arrogance is staggering. He is human there's no doubt, but the energy readings we got earlier confirmed he possesses a formidable, hidden power. Given his confidence I suspect it's a sacred gear, perhaps even a Longinus."
Tsubaki, who was still visibly trembling, managed to speak.
"President, how should we proceed? That boy is…impossible to deal with."
"We proceed as planned," Sona said, her voice regaining its cold steel edge. "First we need to learn the nature of his power. Tsubaki, bring me the magic device from his seat."
The Peerage Queen knelt reaching under the plush cushion where Sona had carefully placed a concealed devil chip prior to the meeting. Her fingers brushed against something, not the smooth hard edge of the chip, but something crinkly. She pulled out a small, balled up piece of yellow paper.
"President," Tsubaki whispered, her confusion deepening. "The device…it's gone."
She handed the crumpled sticky note to Sona. Sona quickly took it, her eyebrows furrowing in confusion, then unballed the paper.
Drawn crudely in black ink was a cartoon stick figure giving her an exaggerated middle finger. Beneath it, written in bold, childish script, were just two words.
*From Sukuna*
Sona's face, usually a mask of cool composure, turned a startling shade of crimson. She gripped the paper so tightly her knuckles went white, the sound of the paper crunching began audible in the otherwise silent room.
A few members of the peerage couldn't help themselves; small, suppressed chuckles rippled through the room. They looked away quickly when Sona or her Queen snapped their heads in their direction, hiding their grins, as they wondered when the last time a boy had managed to get under their king's skin.
o-O-o
The walk back through the academy hallways was a complete contrast to the tension of the Student Council Room. The marble floors gleamed with a polished sheen, and the high ceilings amplified the soft clatter of the bustling students. The red brick exterior, visible through the arched windows cast a warm, institutional glow over the passing students.
Sukuna moved with the same slow, unhurried stride, his hands casually tucked into his tailored suit's pockets. He held a small silver chip, the very chip Sona was currently looking for between his right thumb and index finger. Ura walked beside him, holding the binder and uniform bag, her expression a mix of amusement and pride.
"That was rather naughty, Master," Ura said, though a faint smile lingered on her lips. "Teasing the poor Vice President like that."
"Naughty?" Sukuna scoffed, his voice a low, dry rasp. "I was merely offering an accurate observation. They should be grateful I didn't comment on the Sitri's underwhelming assets."
He brought the stolen chip closer to his face, his blue eyes turning crimson as he activated his mystic eyes. The chip glowed faintly with a complex, interwoven network of low-grade detection magic.
"Look at this," he continued, turning the chip over slowly. "It's so noisy. Designed to detect foreign energy signatures, specifically those that don't belong to the Three Factions. A little devil toy to help them identify Sacred Gears before the Angels or Fallen get a chance." He rolled his eyes. "Always trying to get ahead of the curve, those girls. Thanks again for snagging it, Ura. Much appreciated."
"Of course, Master. They really should pay more attention."
Sukuna dropped the chip to the polished floor before he brought his expensive loafer down on it with a decisive, sharp crunch. The sound was surprisingly loud in the hallway, and the silver fragments scattered slightly, dissolving instantly into black smoke that vanished before any student could notice.
"Problem solved," he announced.
As they neared the main entrance, Sukuna's relaxed expression tightened ever so slightly. His gaze drifted lazily toward a junction where a stairwell met a darkened storage opening. He felt a distinct, albeit subtle, spike of magic energy.
He turned his head slowly, catching the briefest flash of movement, a glimpse of white hair and white blue polka dotted panties before the figure jerked out of sight.
"Ah, the Gremory's cat," he murmured, a crooked smile growing across his face.
"Gremory's cat, Master?" Ura asked, becoming slightly irritated by the unseen observer. "Someone dares to spy on us? Such insolence!"
"Nah, just the classic curiosity and cat scenario, Ura. No need to get your panties in a twist. It's the small silent one. Seems the Devil King's little Rook is already taking notes on the handsome new transfer student for her master." He shrugged unbothered. "Let her watch. It's only polite to let the weaklings think they're being useful."
They passed through the academy's main doors, the warm spring air hitting them instantly. The black Cadillac Escalate was waiting patiently at the curb, its tinted windows reflecting the red brick of the school.
"I'm hungry," Sukuna declared as they reached the main gate.
Ura chuckled, a warm, melodic sound.
"What would you like for dinner, Master? Something to celebrate your successful introduction to the supernatural world?"
"Something succulent and filled with meat," he responded, his eyes gleaming with excitement and anticipation. "Something that would require a bib and lots of napkins."
As they made their way to the driver, who was patiently awaiting their return, the white haired Devil Koneko Toujou emerged from her hidden scouting spot near the stairwell. Her expression, a typical stoic, showed a small wrinkle of confusion and alarm. She watched the black SUV slowly drive away from the academy.
The moment the car vanished around the corner, Koneko turned, her short skirt swishing slightly and began making her way to the old school building. Her small feet moved with an unusual urgency, knowing she had a very strange report to deliver to her master.
o-O-o
The Occult Research Club Room was a haven of dim light and dusty antiquity, nestled in the forgotten corner of the Old School Building. The air inside was heavy and smelled faintly of old parchment and brewing tea. Velvet curtains, drawn against the late afternoon sun, cast the space in perpetual twilight, illuminated only by a few ornate, low hanging lamps and wall mounted candlesticks. Twin couches with emerald green fabric sat across from each other with a small coffee table dividing them.
Soon Koneko arrived softly, opening the large wooden door and closing it behind her, her movements silent and efficient. She found her king lounging on one of the central couches. Rias of course was completely naked, her long crimson hair flowing over the cushions like a waterfall. Her magnificent, giant breasts were left completely on display, resting usually perky against her chest as she reclined.
Koneko, who had long since grown used to her master's casual shamelessness, didn't bat an eye. She made her way over to her king, who happily greeted her with a warm smile. Akeno Himejima, the queen, dressed in the standard Kuoh Academy uniform though personally tailored much shorter than most, slowly and gracefully poured tea from a steaming kettle into her porcelain cup.
"Welcome back, Koneko." Rias said, her voice both smooth and maternal. "Did the new student prove interesting?"
Koneko took an offered cup from Akeno before answering.
"Yes, Buchou. He and his servant both possess significant magic. It is not that surprising given they are both from the Doumon Clan."
"Indeed," Rias agreed as she thought of the other Five Principal Clans.
At the mention of one of the Five Principal Clans, Akeno's usual serene calm expression cracked ever so slightly. The gentle curve of her smile momentarily tightened as she remembered her own clan, Himejima, that killed her mother and tried to kill her when she was just a child. Rias noticed the brief lapse and gave her peerage's queen an understanding smile, before turning back to Koneko.
"Contiue, Koneko," Rias prompted.
"His aura," Koneko stated, her voice flat, "was the same as the one I smelled alongside the Stray Devil's the other night. It was foul, malevolent, and overwhelmingly oppressive."
Rias's eyes narrowed slightly, her hand pausing mid-sip. The movement caused her giant breasts to jiggle slightly. "Could it be a Scared Gear?"
Koneko shook her head. "I'm not sure, Buchou. But based on the sheer amount of power I picked up, if it is a Sacred Gear, it would definitely be a Longinus."
Akeno was slightly confused and brought her finger to her lip.
"A Longinus? But are any of the known categorized Longinuses known to have a foul, malevolent aura?"
Kiba Yuuto, the Gremory's Knight, who'd been busy cleaning his sword near the fireplace, offered his own thoughts.
"It could be a newly evolved one, Akeno. Sacred Gears sometimes evolve dramatically based upon the power of the host. Perhaps a longinus that has reached a new stage of development or maybe one that's been corrupted?"
Rias took all this in, sipping her tea. She turned her attention back to her Rook.
"Will it be a problem for you Koneko?"
The small girl shook her head again. "No. He just smells wrong. But then again so do most teenage boys."
Everyone in the room laughed at the young girl's words.
"A fair assessment. I will keep it in mind. Thank you for your surveillance, Koneko. Please continue to keep an eye on him when he arrives for classes tomorrow."
Kiba sheathed his sword with a clear sound.
"What about the boy from 2B Buchou? Issei Hyoudou, the local pervert that caught your eye recently."
Rias seemed to ponder her Knight's words. She indeed had been interested in the perverted boy, especially when Koneko mentioned his Sacred Gear smelled draconic. Though this new boy presented a whole new amount of value considering he killed a Stray all on his own which meant he was probably already proficient with his own Scared Gear, while Issei would just be a novice at best. Taking a moment to think on all her options before she finally spoke.
"We will continue to monitor both of them," Rias declared, setting her teacup down on the small coffee table. "After all one can never have too many powerful peerage members."
She shifted on the couch, preparing to discuss a plan to "welcome" the young man into their little family when suddenly, a blue demonic seal flared to life on the polished wooden floor of the ORC room. Out stepped both Sona Sitri and her peerage's queen, Tsubaki Shinra.
Sona was already mid-sentence, likely about to start discussing the rude transfer student, when she noticed Rias's outfit or rather lack thereof. Her expression tightened as she took in the sight of the Gremory heir lounging about naked as the day she was born. Sona, already tired from her ordeal with the new transfer student, became even more exasperated.
Rias greeted her friend and rival politely with a wave of her hand and a wide unapologetic smile.
"Sona! Tsubaki! How wonderful for you to drop by."
Sona could only stare at her childhood friend and fellow Devil King, her gaze flicking from Rias's smiling face to her impossibly large, exposed breasts and then back up again.
"Really Rias?" Sona asked, gesturing to the Gremory heir's complete state of undress, while repeating the word. "Really?"
Rias simply shrugged in response, the movement causing her breasts to bounce mesmerizing on her chest.
"What can I say Sona, I can't relax unless I'm completely naked."
Sona watched the mesmerizing movement, her eyes flickering down to her own apple-sized breasts hidden beneath her crisp white uniform shirt. A small internal sigh escaped her. Her mother and older sister, Serafall Leviathan, both boasted chests of the watermelon variety. She kept telling herself that she was merely a late bloomer, and soon her chest would start growing too.
Akeno, ever perceptive and slightly sadistic, saw the flicker of self-consciousness in Sona's eyes.
"Ara Ara," She said in her usual low drawn out greeting.
Sona's eyes instantly snapped to the smiling Gremory Queen.
"Shut it, Akeno."
Rias, ignoring the rivalry, gestured to the couch opposite her.
"Sit Sona. Do tell me about this new transfer student. He sounds…entertaining."
Sona sat, maintaining a rigid posture that contrasted sharply with Rias's leisurely sprawl. She recounted her encounter, detailing Sukuna's utterly arrogant and insufferable attitude.
"He mistreated Principal Tanaka, of course, but the worst part is he knows. He recognized instantly that Tanaka is just a figurehead, and that we are the ones actually running the show."
Rias was intrigued, a thoughtful look on her face. Akeno meanwhile was just amused.
"Poor Principal Tanaka," she mused, a faint, dark chuckle escaping her lips. "Perhaps I should have another session with him to ease his tension. A little leather and whip often help with stress, wouldn't you agree, Sona?" The dominatrix persona slipped out, making her purple violet eyes gleam with playful malice.
Sona ignored her rival's queen and continued.
"He was meant to sit on a sensor chip I had planted. He not only detected it, but left this for me instead." She handed the balled-up sticky note to Rias.
Rias unballed the note, taking the crude stick figure and the middle finger. She let out a loud, delightful laugh that echoed slightly in the dim room.
"Oh, what a naughty boy!" she exclaimed, still laughing, wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "Don't worry, Sona, I'll teach him some manners."
"No," Sona interjected, her voice firm. "I will. I would be the better fit to teach him discipline and reign in his chaos."
Rias immediately became defensive, sitting up slightly, causing her chest to jiggle.
"Excuse me? Sona, you know my family is pushing up the timeline for my upcoming battle! I need all the powerful peerage members I can get! Besides, he's in my territory."
Sona simply pointed her finger at Rias.
"Then you should hurry up and recruit Issei Hyoudou, since he's already shown he has potential. Sukuna should be mine. His insolence demands a firmer hand. And it's "our" territory."
"No way!" Rias retorted, sounding exactly like a petulant child. "You already have your eyes on Saji, leave Sukuna for me!" Rias even pulled the best friend card. "Come on, Sona for me? Your best friend?"
The conversation quickly devolved into a petty argument that sounded less like two Devil Kings squabbling over an asset and more like two children fighting over their favorite toy. They eventually ended the squabble with a deal.
"Fine," Rias huffed. "We both try to recruit him. Whoever he chooses, there will be no hard feelings."
"Agreed," Sona nodded stiffly.
Rias, wanting to have the last word, leaned forward slowly.
"But I have a leg up on you, Sona, in this competition. If the boy is truly as perverted as you described that is." She said, as she intentionally made her breasts jiggle violently, while Akeno feeling petty, did the same.
Sona began to grinned her teeth in frustration knowing they had a point. Tsubaki who'd been standing behind her silent, couldn't help but express a small chuckle at her King's plight. Sona looked deeply into Rias's eyes studying her. She knew her friend was many things: loving to her family, her peerage and friends, but shamelessly manipulative if the need ever arose. They moved away from the discussions of Sukuna, and began talking about the Fallen Angels who'd been staying inside the territory uninvited in the town's abandoned church.
"We can't move to expel them without risking starting the next Great War, Rias." Sona reminded her, well aware of her Queen's hatred for the Fallen.
"I know," Rias sighed, the light mood training away. "My brother has forbidden me from moving against them."
Quickly, the conversation evolved into two younger siblings complaining about their overpowered older siblings.
"She keeps trying to make me join her as a guest star in her magic girl show! It's exhausting!"
Rias threw her head back laughing.
"Tell me about it! Sirzechs keeps begging me to do a duet with him for his music. He says our voices blend perfectly. I've told him no more times than I can count!"
Soon, the club room was filled with the warm sound of shared laughter, washing away the earlier tension as the son slowly set over the horizon, casting the entire town in deep, comfortable shadow.
