Chapter 208 - 208. The Fallen Protector

The only case of there being a Nephilim was Dominick and they were glad that he was still around, though it was likely impossible for him to die given what he was.

"Dominick had been one of the Protectors of Faerie and at some point, it was rumoured he had fallen in love, though no one knew who it was he was in love with. Due to his emotions, he had inadvertedly chosen a side and so he was no longer impartial. As a result, he lost his wings, and he fell long before the others fell. He never sought out the one he had loved, and he lives in shame," Daemon explained as they walked through the long grass of Summer in the direction of the palace where the man was likely to be.

They had drawn a lot of attention, and a crowd of followers were trying to sneak along unnoticed, but they were all terrible at it and the group was very aware of the attention.

It had taken some time to explain things fully to Jagum, who had taken the news of the four Courts fairly well, all things considered.

He had simply nodded but he had taken to staring at her when he thought she wasn't watching. She chose to ignore it and let him ask his questions when he was ready.

Approaching the palace, she had been looking up and was anxious to see the occasional glimpse of the Protectors above, dark purple wings and glowing crowns.

"Do you think the Protectors will try and stop us? It will leave them unable to fly again," she asked, fear pulling through her.

"I don't know," Daemon said softly, his hand still tight in hers.

"Will Dominick help us?" she asked, and Daemon avoided her eyes.

"I can only hope so," he replied, their eyes lifting to the roiling clouds that had covered all of Faerie in a mass that was unnatural, even for Faerie.

"We are running out of time," she breathed, and he picked up the pace.

They reached the palace and the guards didn't even try and stop them all from barging in, watching them curiously and the throne room was packed, though Cecelia was absent from the dais.

Nyrellia was present though and her lovely face lit up at the sight of them, trying to shove her way over but Daemon saw her coming and dragged Etani along, Uzo keeping his head bowed and trying to go by unnoticed.

She had wanted him to stay behind but Daemon had said he needed to be there, just in case.

They hurried through the milling, whispering crowd in search of the Nephilim but he didn't seem to be there and Daemon cursed, looking back at her and a terrified Uzo.

"This was a bad idea," she whispered, and Daemon clenched his jaw, knowing she was right.

A massive hand came down on her shoulder, the other on Uzo's and they looked up to see Toro standing over them, his black helmet pulled up to reveal a mass of red hair, a beard and a wicked, gleeful grin.

"Fancy this, a Winter Fae in the Summer palace…" he purred, and she felt panic going through her.

Turning, she drove her clenched fist up into Toro's face, the giant of a man stumbling back.

"Go Uzo! Ayathian!" she cried, and the Fae slipped sideways out of that reality.

Daemon hooked his arm around her waist, and they were running, Jagum slinking easily along beside them as Toro screamed profanity and the guards moved. They were fine so long as there was no aggression, but they had attacked first and now they were all in trouble.

The crowd parted to allow them access as they ran, ducking down empty corridors with the pounding boots of Toro barrelling down on them.

"Where would he be?" she gasped as they skidded down another corridor and Daemon scowled, unsure where to go.

"Dominick!?" he yelled, and the name was repeated, whispered and spread along the halls and the search for the Nephilim was on with half of Summer calling for him while they dodged guards.

Caught up in a crowd, a fist came down on her shoulder and she yelped as she was jerked back from Daemon who spun, teeth bared.

"Stop, demon," Toro snarled, a long blade held against her throat and she looked to Daemon, his eyes locked on hers.

"Let her go and I won't rip you apart, Toro," Daemon snarled, unable to take his eyes off her.

"Leave and I won't cut her pretty head off," Toro countered and finally Daemon looked up from her.

"Why do you care about what happens?" Daemon demanded.

"You brought Winter into the Summer Court, you're a traitor," Toro said angrily the blade firm against her throat but not yet drawing blood.

"I'm neutral, I can't be a traitor," Daemon countered and Toro growled, unsure and angry.

Her eyes slid from Daemon to a figure that was walking towards them, the man looking confused and frustrated. There was no denying who that man was even if his wings had gone. He was wearing a mask similar to that of Galad, only it had been broken apart, the left side missing from the horn to the edge, leaving him around three quarters of it.

He was still a muscular God-like beauty, and his eyes were a shocking shade of violet that she found painfully captivating.

He wore black pants but nothing else aside from the headdress.

"What are you doing, Toro?" Dominick demanded and Daemon spun to the man.

"I've captured the Winter Princess," Toro snarled.

"She's not the Winter Princess, she's not even Fae," Daemon snapped, unsure where to look.

"Let her go, she's not Fae and too old to be a changeling, unless you're looking for a sex toy," Dominick spoke with a dispassionate tone that had her even more horrified by his casual suggestion that Toro keep her for sexual needs. Daemon seemed to have the same thought pattern, his eyes glowing a soft golden yellow in his anger.

The suggestion had Toro looking down at her, his free hand going up under her jaw and jerking her head back to look up at him.

"Good looking enough," he grunted and when his hand started to drop down her chest, she growled. Toro laughed and shoved her away from him, the sword nicking her throat but doing no real harm.

Daemon caught her and she was pulled into his arms, Jagum stepping to protect her back from Dominick.

"What are you doing here?" Dominick demanded and Daemon turned on him.

"We need to talk to you," Daemon snapped back, Dominick's brows lifted in surprise.

Toro didn't look overly impressed to have to let them go, glaring at her as she lifted two fingers in a rude salute to him that made his jaw clench in anger.

Dominick led them away from the giant in black, guiding them into a small sitting room and pulling the door shut behind them.
