By late July, just as Yangsha Village was in the midst of the busy summer harvest, monumental news swept through the village.
The wealthy Landlord Guo—the man who obsessively took in new concubines year after year—had been hauled away by the Government on charges of intentional murder!
"I heard they dug up over thirty corpses from a dry well in Mr. Guo's backyard, and all of them were women! Just listen to that—what a terrible sin! Everyone thought his concubines had simply run away, but it turns out they were murdered."
"I heard they even tore down the estate. There are dozens more buried underground, and they're still counting them as we speak."
"Just recently, he was still talking about taking another concubine. Thank goodness our girl wasn't pretty enough to meet his standards, or else I'd be crying my eyes out by now!"
