Cara Preston had realized her mother's intentions long ago. She knew that even if she got into a university, Rona Langdon wouldn't pay for her tuition. From Rona's narrow point of view, an educated daughter would be a threat. She'd worry that once Cara's horizons were broadened beyond Crestfall, she would no longer be willing to marry Maxwell Preston.
But with Nathaniel Nathan in the picture, Cara Preston now had the leverage she needed to persuade Rona Langdon. She had always been a schemer and knew better than anyone how crucial getting an education and leaving Crestfall was for her future.
"But it doesn't seem like Nathaniel Nathan has any interest in you," Rona Langdon said with a frown.
Cara Preston smiled. "Mom, you have to trust me. Even if Nathaniel has no interest in me right now, I know I can make him see how wonderful I am. In the end, I'll be the one he marries."
