Chapter 1 - The contract that changes everything

Lin Yue stared at the computer screen, frozen. The numbers seemed unreal, impossible. Her family's company, the pride of her parents' lives was on the very edge of collapse. Heart racing, her hands trembling, she pressed her fingers against her temples, trying to think. But every attempt to find a solution hit a wall of panic.

Her parents were beside her, faces pale. "Yue… what do we do?" her mother whispered, voice breaking. Her father remained silent, staring at the same report, jaw tight, eyes filled with fear.

"I… I don't know," Lin Yue admitted, though the words felt hollow even as she said them. She felt like the world had caved in around her. Everything she had worked for, everything her family had built, was slipping through her fingers like water.

Then a shadow fell across the desk. A chill ran down her spine. She looked up and saw Huo Jian standing there, his expression calm, controlled, sharp as a blade. Every instinct told her to run, to yell, to push back... but she couldn't.

"You see this," he said, voice low and dangerous, "because of me, your family's company is hanging by a thread."

The words hit her like a punsh in the face. Rage and disbelief surged through her. She wanted to scream, to accuse him, to demand an explanation. Yet even as anger flared, fear rooted her to the spot. She could not deny the truth... her life and her family's fate rested in his hands.

Huo Jian took a step closer, cold and deliberate. The room seemed smaller, tighter, as if the walls themselves were pressing in. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a document, placing it on the polished mahogany desk with precise care.

"Sign this marriage contract by tomorrow," he said, his dark eyes fixed on hers, unreadable and merciless. "Or watch your family's company shatter like glass. The choice is yours."

Lin Yue's stomach dropped. Marriage? The word echoed in her mind. Her independence, her dreams, her sense of self-everything depended on her response to this one ultimatum. She could refuse, but that meant watching her parents' hard work vanish. She could agree, but that meant surrendering her future, her dignity, her right to choose her own life.

She swallowed hard, trying to steady her trembling lips. "You… you can't be serious," she whispered, though her voice with doubt.

Huo Jian didn't blink. "I am very serious. Tomorrow, you decide. There is no other option."

Her chest tightened. How could one person have so much control over her life? Over her family's life? She wanted to strike him, to yell, to run... but the weight of responsibility pinned her in place.

Huo Jian motioned toward the room. Assistants, colleagues, even her parents watched silently. Lin Yue's cheeks burned with shame. She felt like a prize on display, exposed under the gaze of everyone who knew her.

She clenched her fists so tightly her nails dug into her palms. Huo Jian tilted his head, observing, and slowly flipped the paper toward her. She wanted to resist, to assert herself, but every muscle in her body screamed that she had no power here.

"You are in no position to refuse," Huo Jian continued, voice smooth, commanding. "Every part in this contract is final. Read carefully, Lin Yue. Consider the consequences."

She bent over the paper, scanning the dense legal language. One part after another seemed to slice through her chest: she would live under his roof, appear publicly as his wife, obey his instructions in business matters. Every word screamed control, domination, finality.

She wanted to close the document, to rip it up, but the thought of her family losing everything made her hands freeze. Pride fought with love, anger fought with fear, and Lin Yue felt herself breaking under the weight of impossible choices.

Her fingers hovered over the pen. The polished wood of the desk felt cold beneath her fingertips, the weight of it heavier than she could bear. One signature would change her life forever. One refusal would destroy everything she loved.

Memories of her childhood flashed in her mind: evenings spent helping her parents with the company, their laughter, the way they had always believed in her. She could not let it all vanish. But could she really surrender herself?

She glanced at Huo Jian. His expression was unreadable, but there was a faint glimmer his eyes, almost… eager? Something made her stomach twist. The power he held over her was absolute, but she felt… a spark. A challenge.

She wanted to resist. She wanted to fight. But she was also terrified. The contract was more than words, it was a trap, a cage, and she was already inside it.

The office was silent except for the ticking of the clock. The sunlight streaming through the tall windows cast sharp shadows across the room. Lin Yue could hear her own heartbeat, loud and irregular, and the faint rustle of papers as Huo Jian moved.

Her palms were sweaty, and her mind raced with impossible questions. What would her friends think if they knew she had no choice? What would the world say if she signed? Would she ever see her old life again?

Huo Jian's presence was suffocating, like a shadow that consumed all light. His calm, precise movements, the faint curve of his lips, the piercing focus of his gaze... it all combined into a force she could not resist. Every instinct screamed to fight, but she could not move.

She swallowed, trying to catch her breath. She could almost feel the future narrowing before her, a corridor with no exits. One step forward and everything would change. One step back, and it would be gone.

Lin Yue lifted the pen, hand trembling. Her mind screamed in chaos: I can't… I must… my family… my independence…

Huo Jian's gaze held hers, unwavering, sharp, and chilling. It was as if he could see every thought, every fear, every secret. A shiver ran down her spine.

She wanted to scream, to refuse and just run. But she could not. Every second stretched, each tick of the clock like a drumbeat counting down to her decision.

And then she thought of her parents, tired, exhausted, relying on her. She felt a tight ache in her chest. She could not fail them. Could not let them lose everything.

Her hand touching the pen, heavy with dread. One signature would bind her, change her, trap her... but perhaps it was the only way to survive.

She closed her eyes for second... and a sudden knock on the office door made her jump. Huo Jian's sharp gaze flicked to the door, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. Something told her the next moment could change everything.
