Miles Xavier's deep-set eyes slowly lost their focus. In truth, his heart had long since wavered.
"Give the car back to her. And have her stay for dinner."
"Yes, sir!" Caleb Adler nodded happily, even more thrilled than if he had received a reward himself.
It was only after he left the monitoring room that he realized he had been a little too happy.
'But why was I so happy? Thinking about it now, my heart aches terribly.'
Shaking his head, Caleb Adler silently reminded himself, 'I can't have any improper thoughts about Miss Shaw. She's the one President Xavier has his eye on.'
"Joan, are you done with your work?"
Joan Shaw was tidying up in the laundry room when she heard Caleb Adler's voice from behind her.
She was overjoyed and smiled. "Caleb, what are you doing here?"
Caleb Adler was a little taken aback, but also pleasantly surprised. The way she addressed him felt incredibly heartwarming.
