Chapter 6 — When Presence Becomes Protection
The morning sun barely touched the walls when the alarms sounded. A Titan had breached the outer patrol. Panic rippled through the barracks like a live wire, but you moved instinctively.
You didn't need orders. You didn't need guidance. You simply acted.
Hange grabbed your arm. "Stay close. Some of them—"
"I know," you said.
Your steps were quick, purposeful. You guided injured soldiers out of harm's way, calming those frozen by fear. One young recruit stumbled, eyes wide with terror. You crouched beside him.
"Look at me," you said softly. "You're safe now. I'm here."
He nodded, barely believing you—but believing enough to move.
Eren was cornered. His panic was palpable, hands shaking as a Titan loomed nearby. You ran beside him, grabbing his arm.
"Focus on me," you commanded quietly. "Breathe."
He inhaled, exhaling shakily. Your presence grounded him, steadied him. Together, you guided him toward a safer path, keeping calm despite the chaos.
Mikasa followed closely, trusting your direction without question. Your quiet assurance had created a ripple: even the strongest, the most battle-hardened, now relied on you.
Levi appeared suddenly, silent as a shadow, his blade cutting through the air with deadly precision. He glanced at you—not with irritation, not with skepticism—but with something rare. Approval. Recognition. Relief.
"…Tch," he muttered, sheathing his weapon. "Not bad," he said quietly.
You didn't respond with words. You simply nodded. Action had spoken louder than any compliment ever could.
By nightfall, the immediate danger had passed. The soldiers were exhausted but alive. You moved quietly through the infirmary, offering water, bandages, and calm words.
Connie found you first. "You… you stayed calm the whole time. Even when I thought I'd lose it."
You shrugged. "Somebody had to."
Sasha smiled, cheeks flushed. "You make things… easier. You make people feel safe."
Your heart skipped. This—these small words—were the first recognition you'd received beyond acknowledgment. They didn't just see you as someone who helps; they saw you as someone they needed.
Later, in the quiet of the barracks, Levi approached again. He stood at the edge of your cot, silent, studying you.
"You saved him," he said, voice low.
"You mean Eren?"
"…Yes," he said. "…Not everyone could've kept him together."
You looked down, quietly. "I just stayed."
A faint pause. Then he said something almost imperceptible: "…Tch. Don't leave."
Your chest tightened. For the first time, Levi didn't just notice you—he depended on you, even if only a little.
That night, you lay on your cot, reflecting on the day.
Soldiers had survived because of your presence.
Eren had regained composure.
Levi had begun to trust you.
You realized the truth: in this world, being human was the most powerful thing of all. Titans could break walls, crush bodies—but despair? Fear? Isolation? That was what killed faster.
And you had changed that.
One person at a time. One moment at a time.
You weren't just surviving this world. You were making it livable.
And the ripple of care you created was growing.
