Lucius was enjoying himself.
Nine of Killian's guards hung above the villa courtyard in a loose circle, each trapped inside a separate telekinetic field. Their skin still glowed beneath the frost gathering over it. Extremis fought the cold by forcing more heat through their bodies, while Lucius lowered the temperature another degree and watched which system failed first.
The first man had already lost an arm. A fresh one had pushed out of the shoulder in less than a minute, shedding red light through the ice until fingers formed and curled. Lucius removed the replacement at the elbow. The second attempt took longer and produced a hand that shook before it had finished growing.
"Useful, but wasteful. You people burn enough energy to embarrass a blast furnace."
The guard spat at him. The saliva froze before it travelled a foot.
Lucius tilted his head, then drew an invisible edge across the man's neck.
The head remained suspended while the body struck the stone below. Extremis flared through the severed flesh. A spine began to descend from the head, followed by ribs, organs, and a wet framework that forced itself into the shape of a new body. The process consumed the orange glow until the man's face dulled from fury to terror.
"Now that is interesting. Horrible, but interesting."
Lucius waited until the new feet had formed, then separated the head again.
The wound brightened. Flesh crept over the exposed bone, stopped, and split when the temperature inside the field fell below negative two hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Lucius continued to negative two hundred thirty-eight. The orange light vanished from every test subject at once.
He checked their minds and the shrinking reserve Extremis had been spending to keep them alive. The program had not surrendered; biochemical programs lacked the good manners to admit defeat. It had simply become too slow to matter. Regeneration also carried a cost. Given warmth and enough stored energy, one of the infected could replace an obscene amount of tissue. Denied both, the miracle became an unpaid bill.
"Cold suppresses activation, repeated regeneration drains the reserve, and a head can grow one body but not an endless collection." Lucius looked toward the villa as another impact shook dust from a broken balcony. "Tony will pretend he reached the same conclusion three minutes ago. I should get there before he files a patent."
The nine fields contracted. Frozen tissue broke down into dust finer than ash, and Lucius scattered it through the upper atmosphere before floating through the shattered wall.
--
Tony was losing with considerable professionalism.
Killian drove a glowing fist into the Mark 42's breastplate and launched him through a marble partition. The armour struck the floor hard enough to crack it, rolled, and rose with one repulsor flickering. Heat warnings covered the inside of Tony's display. Most of JARVIS had lived in servers beneath the Malibu mansion, and most of those servers were now buried under its wreckage. The surviving fragments, combined with the processors inside the suit, were enough to keep Tony moving but not enough to make the Mark 42 enjoy being cooked from the outside.
The thin telekinetic layer Lucius had wrapped around the armour took the worst of the next blow. It was the only reason the Mark 42 bent instead of collapsing, which left Tony inside a badly ringing helmet rather than a crushed one.
"You designed a terrorist and hired an actor," Tony pushed himself upright, "but stealing my suit is where the plan gets insulting."
Killian's forearm glowed from wrist to elbow. "You should feel honoured, the suit will house the President. The Mandarin takes him, the country panics, and the man who controls the threat controls the response. But do not tire your little genius brain with these. You will be working on making Extremis stable. Unless you want your little readhead to be the centre of an explosion."
Tony fired both palms. Killian crossed the room through a cabinet, came out burning, and kept walking.
"That is your pitch? Work for me, or I'll experiment on your girlfriend? You could have led with it before the glowing-punch demonstration."
Killian caught Tony's wrist, melted two finger housings, and twisted until a joint motor screamed. "You mistake a fact for a pitch, Stark."
"No, I mistake your face for something I can improve."
Tony drove his helmet into Killian's nose. The strike staggered Killian for half a step and damaged one of Tony's neck seals. Killian smiled as the bone repaired.
Lucius floated into the room where they were with a blond soldier spread helplessly behind him. The man had been stripped of his weapons, but orange light still crawled beneath his skin as he strained against the grip around every joint.
"Tony, you would not believe what I have discovered about Extremis."
"I would love to hear it." Killian punched Tony through a table. "Any time before my spine becomes a design problem."
Lucius found Pepper against the far wall, restrained beneath the machinery Killian's people had used to force Extremis into her. Heat pulsed under her skin in uneven waves. The transformation was still underway, and the pattern changed faster whenever fear drove her heart rate higher.
He enclosed her in a clear telekinetic shell. Cold settled through it with careful calculation, drawing off enough heat to slow the reaction without freezing living tissue.
Lucius checked Pepper's cellular response before turning back to his captive. "Extremis has astonishing regenerative ability, although it nearly stops under severe cold. Physical enhancement appears to be around three times what my Strengthening Potion provides, but the tendency to explode like an overfilled party favour limits its commercial charm."
Killian drove Tony into a pillar. "Extremis is not a potion. It is the next step in human development."
"Your next step just lost both feet."
Two invisible cuts passed through the blond soldier's ankles. Lucius kept the severed parts suspended beside him and reduced the temperature around the wounds. Extremis produced new bone and muscle, but the growth slowed as frost spread over the man's calves.
Tony caught Killian's elbow and fired a repulsor beneath his jaw. "How cold?"
"At negative two hundred thirty-eight degrees Fahrenheit, regeneration becomes a strongly worded intention. It does not become progress."
"That seems inconvenient for ski trips."
Killian seized Tony by the helmet. "You think either of you understands what I built because you have mutilated a few disposable assets?"
Lucius rotated two fingers. Killian's grip opened against his will, saving Tony's neck from the follow-up strike.
"I understand that you built disposable soldiers." Lucius removed the blond man's regenerated right hand. "That was rather clear."
Tony rolled away from a kick, rose behind Killian, and drove a repulsor into his back. The blast pushed Killian three steps closer to Lucius.
Killian corrected his balance and lunged. His knee should have struck Tony's damaged chest plate. Lucius turned the joint two inches to the side, and the blow missed.
"Are you helping me or collecting data?" Tony backed away as the suit rerouted power from its damaged left arm.
"Yes."
The blond soldier managed to regenerate both feet. Lucius lowered the field another forty degrees and cut one arm above the elbow. The stump sealed, glowed, and produced less than an inch of new tissue before stopping.
"The available energy matters more than the number of injuries alone. Every replacement drains the system, and cold prevents it from restoring the loss efficiently."
Killian's chest burned brighter. "Extremis has no weakness. Every limit you think you see is a failure of the host."
Lucius glanced at him. "Then your masterpiece requires perfect subjects, perfect temperature, unlimited energy, and an enemy too polite to remove the head twice. That is not a lack of weakness. That is a list written by an optimist with brain damage."
Tony's repulsor struck Killian in the face before the answer came. "Put that in the brochure."
Lucius examined the soldier one last time. He tightened his telekinetic hold past tissue, past bone, and down through the bonds that kept the body coherent. The man came apart into a fading cloud of molecules. No orange light returned.
"Molecular destruction also works. The side effects include... complete molecular destruction."
Killian wiped blood from his mouth that had already repaired itself. "You are stupid if you believe that proves anything. Extremis will outlive both of you."
The room became still.
Tony took one look at Lucius and moved three steps away.
"You called me stupid." Lucius's voice remained mild. "I want to be certain I heard you correctly, because your remaining life expectancy now depends on whether I imagined a syllable."
Killian tried to raise his arms. Telekinesis pulled them open instead. His legs slid apart, and his body lifted toward the centre of the ruined room.
"You hide behind tricks because you cannot create anything equal to Extremis."
"There it is again. Thank you for confirming it."
Lucius cooled him until the light under his skin dimmed, then cut through both forearms in sections four inches long. He held every piece in order while Extremis rebuilt the missing tissue. When the arms were whole, he divided them again, this time in pieces closer to eight inches.
Killian screamed through the first six cycles. By the tenth, his voice had become a torn rasp. Lucius kept his heart functioning and increased the signals travelling through the exposed nerves whenever shock threatened to spare him the experience.
"This is not cruelty for its own sake," Lucius explained. "It is cruelty for a carefully documented scientific purpose. The distinction matters to grant committees."
Tony leaned against a damaged pillar while the Mark 42 struggled to cool itself. "You have never applied for a grant."
Killian regenerated through the twelfth dismemberment. The thirteenth produced narrow, malformed hands that Lucius removed before they could close. At sixteen, the legs required almost a minute to reform. At nineteen, one knee failed to return.
Lucius cut the four remaining limbs for the twentieth time and held the torso just above the floor. The wounds glowed weakly, then darkened. Nothing grew.
He snapped his fingers and nodded toward the stumps. "You see, your body has reached its limit. Without the required heat, the regeneration has stopped. This gives me time for more tests, which will help you appreciate why calling the smartest person in the room stupid was poor peer review."
Tony approached the limbless body. His faceplate folded back, revealing blood along his hairline and a fury the jokes had not touched.
"You know, Killian, the first time we met, you were a freak." Tony struck him across the mouth with an armoured fist. Teeth crossed the floor. "Now you are a freak with fewer accessibility options."
The second punch broke Killian's nose. The third crushed part of his jaw before the weakened Extremis could repair the first two injuries.
"Tony, stop."
Pepper stood inside the cooling field with one hand pressed against its invisible surface. The glow beneath her skin had receded, though it had not vanished.
Tony's fist remained raised. His breathing filled the open helmet while he looked from Pepper to the man who had injected her.
"He was going to use you until I fixed his mistake."
"I know." Pepper kept her eyes on Tony. "Do not let him decide what you become, too."
The fist lowered.
Lucius had no comparable concern about moral contamination. He increased Killian's nerve activity until every damaged pathway reported at once, held him conscious through the resulting pain, and drew the heat from his brain. Killian's thoughts stopped before his heart did.
"Good news, Playboy. You did not kill him."
Tony stared at the frozen corpse. "You understand that sentence has a second half."
"I did not think it improved the mood."

In the cellar, Trevor Slattery eased open the door and peered down the narrow stairs. Gunfire and screams had moved through the villa in no pattern he understood, which meant hiding remained the most responsible contribution available to him.
He slipped inside, closed the door, and turned toward a stack of wine crates.
Maya Hansen was already crouched behind them.
Trevor placed a hand over his heart. "You frightened me."
Maya stared at him. "You are wearing terrorist robes in a house under attack."
"They are wardrobe. There is an important distinction for legal purposes."
"Take them off."
Trevor considered the suggestion, the cold cellar, and his lack of alternative clothing. "I feel the legal value may outweigh the tactical risk."
Maya shifted farther behind the crates when another impact travelled through the ceiling. Trevor studied her bloodless face and the way she kept looking toward the stairs. Even hiding like a rat might bring her to an unpleasant end if the people upstairs decided every AIM employee belonged in the same grave.
Trevor crouched beside her. "Do you know who is winning?"
The cellar door tore free of its hinges and floated down the stairs. Both of them raised their hands before the first black-armoured officer appeared.
-
The response arrived in layers. Miami SWAT officers secured the outer buildings first. Federal counterterrorism teams followed them into the villa, while hazmat personnel waited for confirmation that the glowing prisoners would not explode. SHIELD agents came last and behaved as if arriving last had been their idea.
By then, Lucius had searched every computer, private server, laboratory terminal, and storage device on the estate and AIM HQ. He removed each Extremis formula, trial record, tissue model, and manufacturing note, then erased the erased sectors for the benefit of anyone who believed recovery software counted as cleverness. The only complete copy went through a sealed link to the surviving JARVIS architecture and Tony's private storage.
Lucius trusted SHIELD and the other agencies exactly as far as he could throw them. Since he could throw most of them into orbit, he revised the expression downward. Leaving Extremis behind would not produce simple reports. It would produce classified trials, missing prisoners, and a hearing in which everyone denied knowing why the witnesses glowed.
Maya and Trevor emerged from the cellar in restraints. Maya looked once toward Pepper, saw her standing beside Tony, and stopped resisting the officers around her. Trevor attempted to explain that the Mandarin had been a performance role until three separate agents told him to save it for the interrogation.
Pepper's condition remained unstable, but the cold had bought time. Tony transferred the Mark 42's surviving medical readings to JARVIS while Lucius maintained the field around her. Between Tony's engineering and the stolen Extremis data, they had a path toward stabilising her that did not involve trusting Killian's corpse.
Dawn reached the broken villa by the time the last prisoner left in an armoured transport. Tony and Pepper walked toward a waiting car. He paused before getting in and looked back at Lucius.
The thankful nod was small, stripped of performance, and therefore worth noticing.
Lucius pointed a warning finger at him. "I will not agree to any deduction from my dividends, Playboy. Mark my words. If you want to throw away money repairing New York, do it from your shares. You will not steal from mine in broad daylight."
Tony's mouth pulled into a tired smile. "You have nearly forty per cent of the company and enough unreported cash to buy a small country."
"Then the theft would be nearly forty per cent more offensive."
Pepper looked between them. "What is he talking about?"
Tony opened the car door for her. "Lucius discovered civic responsibility and is trying to return it before the warranty expires."
"Slander," Lucius called after them. "Check the bylaws."
