Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: The Great Con Artist

Mavis's parents were also members of the Red Lizard, but they have since passed away.

It could be said that her situation was exactly the same as Weston's.

However, Weston had awakened magic and was a boy, so he was valued more by the Guild Master and assigned the job of 'Young Miss's Attendant'.

Mavis, on the other hand, knew no magic and was a frail girl, burdened by the debts left by her parents, so she could only do odd jobs in the guild.

The atmosphere in the Red Lizard guild was not good. Mavis had to do various chores every day, had pitifully little time to rest, and often went hungry.

Weston had no choice but to use his daily time outside 'slacking off' to bring her back some rations.

"Thank you, Weston!"

"Hehehe... You're welcome!"

Weston took the broom from Mavis and began sweeping.

Mavis sat on a nearby low wooden stool, heartily eating the lukewarm grilled fish.

Weston had also eaten this grilled fish; it had simply been cooked over a fire without any seasoning, making the taste ridiculously bland.

But Mavis's expression made it look as if she were eating a mountain delicacy, completely satisfied.

"Weston, you're amazing! You're about the same age as me, yet you can catch so many fish. I can't..."

Weston instinctively offered comfort: "Once you learn magic like me, you'll naturally be able to catch fish."

However, as soon as he finished speaking, Weston noticed that although Mavis expressed admiration, there wasn't much disappointment on her face.

"No, not just fish, I can catch even larger beasts!"

Mavis smiled brightly and declared confidently, "Even without magic, as long as I use the beasts' habits and set up traps beforehand, I can still catch large beasts!"

Weston paused slightly, then smiled himself: "That's right."

To think of setting traps to capture beasts at such a young age, and judging by her words, she seems to already have a solid plan... As expected of Mavis!

"It's just that setting traps isn't easy either. At least, I can't do it yet."

"If I could learn magic, it would be much easier to set up traps, and I'd have more options for the types and techniques of traps..."

"Magic truly is a marvelous field of study!"

The small Mavis, in every word, revealed her deep yearning for magic.

Weston stopped sweeping, sat down next to Mavis, and said, "Actually, you don't need to be too envious. Maybe in a few days, I can teach you magic."

"Teach me?"

"But didn't you awaken your magic yourself?"

"I've read about this situation in books; it shouldn't be transmittable, right?"

"Besides, your magic might not even be suitable for me..."

Although she was still young, Mavis had read many books related to magic and knew that magic was not something that could be easily learned or taught.

It wasn't a matter of value, but because the magic suitable for each person is different.

Without professional guidance, rashly teaching magic could, at best, be fruitless, and at worst, lead to a magic power backlash, causing irreversible permanent damage to the body.

"Of course, I'm not talking about teaching you the Super Ancient Text, but magic that is more suitable for you!"

Looking at the bewildered Mavis in front of him, a gentle smile appeared on Weston's face.

Mavis's talent for magic cultivation wasn't bad; the only thing she lacked was magic skills.

In the original story, because the library on Tenrou Island didn't have much magic to study, she only managed to learn Illusion Magic despite living on the island for thirteen years.

But things are different now.

This is because of the variable that is Weston, and because Weston has latched onto Elefseria's support!

The Magic Database Elefseria shared with Weston today not only contains a wealth of magical knowledge but also methods for cultivating many powerful spells.

As long as he asks Elefseria for help, he will definitely be able to find powerful magic suitable for Mavis to practice.

Just as Weston was about to say something more, a tall figure walked out of the tavern and approached the two of them.

"Hey, Weston!"

The person was Guild Master Giselev of the Red Lizard, and also Zera's father.

He looked gloomy, clearly not here with good intentions.

"Guild Master, is something the matter?"

Guild Master Giselev shoved his ugly, fierce old face close to Weston: "My adorable daughter, Zera, just told me she wanted extra pocket money to buy new clothes for some stinky brat!"

"That detestable brat even made her lie to me, saying it was a fee for the Schoolhouse teacher's workbooks!"

"I think you owe me a satisfactory explanation for this matter, shouldn't you?"

Guild Master Giselev clenched his fist, which was the size of a casserole pot, and seemed to be boiling with rage.

"Uh... about that..."

Weston guiltily averted his gaze.

Zera, that idiot!

I told her specifically not to tell her father the truth, yet she was still so careless... "Lord Guild Master, please believe me, I can definitely give you an explanation!"

"Hehehe... Fine, fine, fine..."

Guild Master Giselev laughed out of sheer anger, glared fiercely at Weston, then lifted Mavis off the wooden stool nearby and sat down himself.

"Then I shall... listen... attentively!"

Guild Master Giselev was not the type of elder, like Makarov, who cared for his companions and children.

On the contrary, his personality was quite vile; he often used his power and strength to bully guild members.

If he had any redeeming qualities, it was that he doted heavily on his daughter, Zera.

Weston's actions this time—misleading Zera—had undoubtedly touched his 'reverse scale'.

"Ah... the situation is like this."

Weston put on an act, feigning injustice.

"Today, when I went to pick up the Young Miss from Schoolhouse, her classmates saw me."

"When they saw my appearance, they were all very surprised and said, 'Miss Zera is the most distinguished child on this island, and for me, her attendant, to be dressed so shabbily, it completely disgraces her.'"

As Weston spoke, he spread his arms, openly displaying his worn-out clothes.

"This gossip caused Miss Zera great distress; she couldn't hold her head up in front of her classmates."

Guild Master Giselev seriously scrutinized Weston's attire and nodded silently.

He probably also felt that such a scruffy brat standing next to his precious daughter was indeed inappropriate.

"A bunch of stinky brats! They don't even think about why their parents are able to live safely on this island—it's all thanks to this old man's protection!"
