Ji-Ah's company headquarters was louder than usual that morning.
Printers hummed nonstop. Employees moved quickly through the glass corridors carrying stacks of files. Several desks were covered with blueprints and reports. A large 3D model of one of the coastal projects stood in the center of the design room.
Everyone was busy.
Very busy.
Inside her office, Ji-Ah stood beside her desk reviewing another contract. Papers were spread across the table, while a half-finished cup of coffee sat beside her laptop.
Hye-Rin entered with another file.
"Director, the engineering team needs your signature for the updated structure plan."
Ji-Ah glanced at it quickly and signed.
"Send it to them."
Another document replaced it immediately.
Deadlines were everywhere.
Ji-Ah pressed her fingers lightly against her temple for a moment before picking up her phone.
"Connect me to Lee Group's assistant."
Hye-Rin nodded and dialed the number.
After a few seconds, the call connected.
"This is Lee Group office," a calm voice answered.
Ji-Ah spoke clearly.
"This is Director Ji-Ah. I'd like to discuss the new project proposal with Mr. Lee."
The assistant responded politely.
"One moment, Director. I'll inform him."
There was a brief pause.
Across the city, Lee Jae-Hyun sat inside his office reviewing documents when his assistant approached him.
"Sir, Director Ji-Ah from the partner company is requesting a meeting about the project."
Lee Jae-Hyun leaned back slightly in his chair.
"Already?"
His assistant nodded.
"Yes."
A faint smile appeared on Lee Jae-Hyun's face.
"Tell her we won't meet in the office."
The assistant looked surprised.
"Sir?"
Lee Jae-Hyun stood up and adjusted his suit jacket.
"Office meetings are too formal. Ask her if she'd be comfortable meeting at a café."
His tone remained polite and relaxed.
"We can discuss the project there."
The assistant returned to the phone.
"Director Ji-Ah, Mr. Lee suggests meeting outside the office. Perhaps a café or restaurant where the discussion can be more comfortable."
Ji-Ah paused slightly.
A café?
That wasn't the usual business style.
For a second she considered refusing.
But then she reminded herself: this was simply a project discussion.
Nothing more.
"That's fine," Ji-Ah replied calmly. "Please send the location."
"Of course."
"And confirm the name," she added. "I'd like to know who I'll be meeting."
"Lee Jae-Hyun, Director."
Ji-Ah nodded slightly.
"Understood."
A few seconds later, the café location arrived on her phone.
She picked up her tablet and briefcase.
"Hye-Rin," she said.
"Yes?"
"We're going out."
An hour later, Ji-Ah arrived at a quiet café near the Han River.
Morning sunlight reflected softly on the water outside. The café was calm, with only a few customers scattered around the tables.
Hye-Rin walked beside her carrying the project files.
"Everything is ready for the Lee Group discussion," she whispered.
Ji-Ah nodded, keeping her expression calm.
Then she saw him.
A man stood near one of the tables, hands casually folded.
Lee Jae-Hyun.
Mid-thirties. Tall. A perfectly tailored suit, but his posture was relaxed rather than stiff.
He smiled politely the moment he saw her.
"Director Ji-Ah."
He stepped forward and extended his hand.
"It's good to finally meet in person."
Ji-Ah shook it firmly.
"Mr. Lee. Likewise."
"Shall we sit?" he asked.
They sat down and immediately opened the project documents.
Ji-Ah placed her tablet on the table and began explaining the development plans.
Lee Jae-Hyun listened carefully.
His questions were precise but polite.
Never impatient.
Never dismissive.
At one point he leaned slightly forward.
"I know you've been managing several projects at the same time," he said quietly. "That must be exhausting."
Ji-Ah blinked.
"I manage," she replied simply.
He smiled faintly.
"Still… people who work this hard should remember to take care of themselves."
Ji-Ah didn't respond immediately.
She returned her focus to the tablet.
The conversation continued smoothly.
Budget.
Construction phases.
Site inspection schedules.
Yet the atmosphere remained surprisingly relaxed.
Eventually Lee Jae-Hyun reached into his pocket and pulled out a small card.
"You can take my number," he said casually.
Ji-Ah looked up.
"Direct contact will be easier," he continued. "No need to go through assistants every time the project needs discussion."
Ji-Ah hesitated for a moment before accepting it.
"Thank you."
She placed the card inside her folder.
A soft laugh escaped her unexpectedly.
At that exact moment, a shadow appeared near the entrance.
Min-Ho.
He had entered the café quietly.
No announcement.
No interruption.
He simply stood near the doorway.
Watching.
His gaze moved directly to Ji-Ah.
Then to the man sitting across from her.
Lee Jae-Hyun.
Min-Ho's expression didn't change.
Calm.
Controlled.
But something sharp flickered briefly in his eyes.
Lee Jae-Hyun remained unaware, still discussing the project.
Ji-Ah felt a strange shift in the atmosphere and instinctively glanced toward the entrance.
Her heartbeat skipped.
Min-Ho.
He didn't approach.
He didn't speak.
He only watched.
Silently.
The meeting ended a few minutes later.
Lee Jae-Hyun stood and offered his hand again.
"Thank you for taking the time today."
Ji-Ah nodded.
"Our teams will begin the next phase soon."
As they shook hands, Ji-Ah glanced toward the entrance once more.
Min-Ho met her gaze for just a second.
No smile.
No reaction.
Just observation.
And in that quiet moment Ji-Ah understood something she hadn't realized before.
The island may have ended.
But whatever had started there—
was far from over.
