Chapter 67 - Chapter 66: Lines in the Forest

Bella's eyes snapped open.

The world was different.

Every detail was impossibly sharp. She could see individual dust particles floating lazily in the beams of sunlight streaming through the window. The texture of the wooden ceiling beams was vivid every grain, every knot, every imperfection crystal clear. She could hear the faint rustle of leaves outside, the distant heartbeat of a bird, the soft breathing of someone nearby. Scents flooded her: pine, rain, Edward's familiar cool scent, and the faint metallic tang of blood somewhere in the house.

She sat up slowly, marveling at how effortless the movement felt. No pain. No weakness. Just power.

Edward was instantly at her side, sitting on the edge of the bed. His golden eyes were filled with a mixture of awe, relief, and love. He reached out, touching her face with the lightest of strokes. His fingers felt warm against her skin now the same temperature.

"We're the same now," he whispered, voice thick with emotion as he stroked her cheek.

Bella looked at him, really looked. His beauty was overwhelming in her new vision every line of his face, every strand of bronze hair, every fleck of gold in his eyes. She reached up and touched his face in return, their skin the same cool temperature.

She stood and walked to the mirror on unsteady but powerful legs. The reflection that stared back was startling. Her skin was pale and flawless, almost glowing. Her eyes were a deep, striking crimson newborn vampire eyes. Her hair seemed richer, her features sharper. She looked like a predator, beautiful and deadly.

She turned and embraced Edward tightly. She didn't realize her new strength until he made a small, uncomfortable sound.

"Careful," he murmured with a strained smile. "You're stronger than you know now."

Bella loosened her grip immediately, laughing softly in wonder. "I love you," she said, voice clear and musical in her new form.

Edward's eyes softened. "I love you."

They kissed passionately, deeply, with centuries of waiting and the new intensity of their shared immortal bodies. The mate bond between them sang, stronger and more vibrant than ever.

When they finally pulled apart, Bella's expression turned serious. "What happened? I remember… the pain. The birth. Mame trying to stop it…"

Edward's face grew somber. He stroked her hair gently. "Mame left right after I turned you. He couldn't watch. We can't find him anywhere. Alice has seen a few visions… In one of them, he kills us all. Except Renesmee. Alice is the last one. He tells her this is what they chose, and if she's seeing this as a vision, to run as far as they can and never come in front of him again."

Bella's crimson eyes widened in horror. "Mame… he wouldn't…"

Edward held her closer. "He's hurting, Bella. He tried to save you as a human. When I turned you… he broke. But we have each other now. And Renesmee. We'll face whatever comes."

Bella nodded slowly, still processing her new reality. She was a vampire. Immortal. Strong. But the cost her brother's rage and the threat he now posed weighed heavily on her even in this new, powerful form.

Outside, the forest was quiet. But somewhere, Mame was out there.

Waiting.

The kiss lingered, full of new immortal passion, but Bella suddenly pulled back, eyes widening with realization.

"Renesmee," she breathed. "Where is she? I need to see her. My baby"

Edward caught her gently by the shoulders, his expression serious. "Bella, wait. You need to control your thirst first. You're a newborn. It's dangerous right now."

Bella paused, feeling the burning hunger rise in her throat for the first time. It was intense a fire that demanded to be fed. She swallowed hard, nodding reluctantly.

"I feel… hungry," she admitted, voice musical and strange to her own ears.

Edward smiled softly. "You need to hunt."

They ran together through the forest at superhuman speed.

Bella marveled at how effortless it felt. The world blurred around her in streaks of green and brown, yet she could see every detail with perfect clarity individual leaves on trees, the veins on a butterfly's wings, the tiny movements of insects on the forest floor. Her new senses were overwhelming and exhilarating.

They leaped over a roaring waterfall in a single bound, landing gracefully on the other side. The mist from the water felt cool against her skin, every droplet distinct.

Edward stopped her near a quiet clearing. "Close your eyes," he said gently. "Listen."

Bella obeyed. At first, there was only the rush of the waterfall. Then, layer by layer, the forest revealed itself to her:

An owl hooting softly in the distance.

A squirrel scurrying across branches, its tiny heartbeat rapid.

Then a deer. Its hooves on the forest floor. The steady rhythm of its heart. The scent of warm blood.

Bella's eyes snapped open, crimson with hunger. She moved toward the sound like a predator, body low and graceful.

But then another scent hit her human. A mountain climber had slipped and hurt himself on a nearby ridge. The smell of his blood was intoxicating, overwhelming. Bella's throat burned. She turned instinctively toward him, fangs bared, a low growl escaping her.

Edward was there in an instant, grabbing her firmly. "Bella, no!"

She struggled for a second, the newborn thirst raging, but Edward's voice cut through. "There are people nearby. You can do this. Run."

Bella wrenched herself away and ran faster than she had ever moved. She leaped off a high cliff without hesitation, the wind rushing past her as she sailed through the air. Edward smiled with pride and followed, landing beside her effortlessly.

She caught the scent of the deer again and pursued it. But before she could reach it, a mountain lion attacked the animal first. Bella didn't hesitate. She took down the mountain lion instead, sinking her teeth into its throat with primal efficiency. The hot blood flooded her mouth, easing the burning thirst.

When she finished, she stood, wiping her mouth, eyes still bright red but clearer. Edward watched her with amazement.

"You ran from human blood mid-hunt," he said, voice full of awe. "Most newborns couldn't have done that."

Bella looked at her hands, still slightly trembling with residual hunger. "I didn't want to hurt anyone."

Edward pulled her into his arms. "You're incredible."

They walked back toward the house together, the forest alive around them in ways Bella had never imagined. But in the back of her mind, the question remained:

Where was Mame?

And what would he do when he learned she was now one of them?

The family was gathered in the living room when Bella and Edward returned from the hunt.

Renesmee looked like she had grown several months in the short time Bella had been transforming. She was sitting in Rosalie's arms, bright-eyed and alert, with a small tuft of bronze-tinted curls and Bella's warm brown eyes. The baby no, toddler now reached out curiously as soon as she saw her mother.

Esme stepped forward first, eyes shining with maternal warmth. "Welcome to the family, Bella. Truly. We are so happy you're with us."

Alice bounced over next, clapping her hands. "You look amazing! The red eyes suit you. Very dramatic."

Carlisle smiled gently from the side. "Someone's been waiting very eagerly to meet you."

Rosalie, who had been holding Renesmee protectively the entire time, stood up slowly. She walked over and carefully placed the baby in Bella's arms.

"Here she is," Rosalie said softly, voice full of pride. "Your daughter."

Bella took Renesmee with trembling hands, holding her close. The baby felt warm and alive against her cool vampire skin. Renesmee immediately reached up and placed her tiny palm against Bella's cheek.

A flood of memories and images poured into Bella's mind not words, but vivid, emotional pictures:

The pain of the birth. Edward's desperate face. The sound of her own weakening heartbeat. Mame's blood. The first cry. Love. Overwhelming, protective love.

Bella gasped, eyes wide with amazement. "She… she showed me. Everything."

Edward stood close, one hand on Bella's back. "She's gifted. Like me with thoughts. Like Alice with the future. She can show people what she's thinking through touch."

Bella stared at her daughter in wonder, tears of blood-tinged joy slipping down her cheeks. "She's so beautiful… but she looks so much older already."

Carlisle nodded, stepping closer. "Her growth rate is unprecedented. She's developing at an accelerated pace. We don't know exactly how fast she'll age, but it's clear she won't have a normal human childhood."

Renesmee cooed softly, touching Bella's face again this time showing her a flash of Jacob's face, filled with protective love.

Bella looked up, confused. "Jacob…?"

Before anyone could answer, Jacob stepped into the room from the doorway. His eyes locked onto Renesmee immediately, the imprint bond clear in the way his entire being softened.

Edward and Bella exchanged a knowing look.

Jacob rubbed the back of his neck, a sheepish but genuine smile on his face. "Yeah… about that. I imprinted on her the moment I saw her. She's… mine to protect now. In every way that matters."

Bella's eyes widened, but she didn't pull Renesmee away. The baby reached toward Jacob with a happy gurgle.

The room was filled with a strange, fragile peace the family whole, yet forever changed.

Mame's absence hung over them all like a shadow. No one had seen him since the birth. But for this moment, they let themselves simply be together.

Bella adjusted to her new existence with surprising speed.

She was fully a vampire now strong, fast, immortal. The burning thirst had settled into something manageable, and her control was exceptional for a newborn.

One afternoon in the clearing behind the Cullen house, she challenged Emmett to an arm-wrestle. The family gathered to watch, amusement and curiosity on their faces.

Emmett grinned confidently. "You sure about this, little sis?"

Bella smiled sweetly and took his hand. The moment they locked grips, she slammed his arm down onto the table with effortless power. The wooden surface cracked under the force.

Emmett stared at his defeated arm in shock. "What the?!"

The family burst into laughter. Rosalie smirked. "Told you she was going to be strong."

Bella laughed, the sound bright and musical. She stood up, walked over to a large boulder nearby, and punched it with casual strength. The rock shattered into pieces, dust exploding outward.

Edward watched her with pure adoration. "You're incredible."

Bella stepped into a patch of sunlight that broke through the clouds. Her skin sparkled like diamonds, catching the light in a thousand brilliant facets. She looked at her own arm in wonder, turning it slowly.

In her mind, a soft voice-over echoed her own thoughts, clear and certain:

"My time as a human was over. But I never felt more alive. I was born to be a vampire."

Renesmee grew at an astonishing rate.

In just a few weeks, she had gone from newborn to the appearance of a six- or seven-year-old child. Her bronze curls had lengthened, her eyes sparkled with intelligence far beyond her apparent age, and she moved with graceful, almost supernatural coordination.

Bella's voice-over continued in her thoughts as she watched her daughter play:

"Renesmee was growing too fast. We all worried about how long we would have with her. It just made every moment more precious."

One snowy afternoon, Renesmee played outside in the fresh powder. Bella laughed as she built a snowman with her daughter. Jacob, in his massive russet wolf form, bounded around them playfully, letting Renesmee climb onto his back and ride him through the snow. The child's delighted giggles filled the air.

Later, as the sun began to set, Bella leaned against Edward, watching Renesmee chase Jacob through the trees.

"We might find answers about her in Brazil," Bella said quietly. "Where your kind originated. There could be legends… something that explains how fast she's growing."

Edward nodded, holding her close. "We'll go soon. Together."

Suddenly, Bella's sharp new senses picked up movement at the edge of the forest. She turned and saw Irina standing there, watching them with a mixture of shock and horror.

"Irina!" Bella called out, raising a hand in greeting.

But Irina's expression twisted with pain. She turned and ran, disappearing into the trees before Bella could say anything more.

Edward's face darkened. "She saw Renesmee with Jacob… the wolves. This won't end well."

Bella's hand tightened on Edward's. The fragile peace they had found was already beginning to crack.

And somewhere out in the wilderness, Mame was still missing his absence a dark cloud hanging over everything.

Irina ran without stopping.

The image of the child the impossible hybrid playing with a wolf burned in her mind. She reached the Volturi in Volterra, demanding an audience.

Aro sat on his throne, intrigued as always. He took Irina's hand and read her memories with a delighted smile.

Caius leaned forward, eyes cold. "An immortal child. Forbidden."

Marcus remained silent, but Aro's excitement was clear.

"The Cullens have created an abomination," Aro said smoothly. "We must act. For the safety of our kind."

The Volturi began their preparations. The guard mobilized. Jane, Alec, Felix, and Demetri stood ready. The ancient coven would travel to Forks to pass judgment.

Alice suddenly froze in the middle of the living room, her eyes glazing over in a vision.

"They're coming," she whispered. "The Volturi. Jane and the others. They know about Renesmee."

The family gathered quickly. Carlisle explained the dark history with calm gravity.

"Immortal children were created in the past beautiful but uncontrollable. They nearly exposed us all. The Volturi destroyed them and their creators. The law is absolute. They will see Renesmee as the same threat."

Edward's face was grim. "We need witnesses. Vampires who can see that she is not dangerous that she grows, that she is unique."

They decided to gather allies from around the world.

Alice and Jasper left suddenly that night, leaving only a note for Bella:

"We'll be back when we can. Find the answers. Protect her. A & J"

Jacob warned the wolves. The Quileute pack, despite their ancient enmity with vampires, agreed to stand with the Cullens to protect Renesmee.

The Cullens began traveling the world, seeking witnesses.

They visited the Denali clan first.

Tanya, Kate, Eleazar, and Carmen listened with varying degrees of shock and curiosity. Eleazar was particularly intrigued by Renesmee's gifts.

"We will stand with you," Tanya said finally. "For Carlisle. For Bella."

They recruited others the Amazon coven (Senna and Zafrina), whose gifts of illusion and vision would be invaluable. The Egyptian vampires (Benjamin, Tia, Amun) with Benjamin's elemental control. Garrett, the nomadic American with a love for freedom. Many others with unique gifts joined them, drawn by the Cullens' reputation and the threat of Volturi overreach.

The Quileute wolves prepared as well, Jacob leading his small pack alongside Sam's reluctant alliance.

Following Alice's clue, Bella traveled to Seattle to meet J. Jenks.

The forger was nervous but professional. He provided forged documents and passports for Renesmee and Jacob identities that could help them disappear if needed.

"It's not my business what you need them for," he said, sliding the papers across the table. "Just be careful."

The family spent Christmas together in a quiet, bittersweet celebration.

Bella gave Charlie a fishing trip as a gift a way to get him safely out of town before the Volturi arrived.

Renesmee gave Bella a beautiful bracelet Jacob had made small wooden charms representing their family. Bella hugged her daughter tightly, tears in her crimson eyes.

But through it all, one shadow remained.

Renesmee, sitting on Bella's lap, suddenly looked toward the trees outside and said softly, "He is here. Just doesn't want to meet you yet."

Bella's heart clenched. "Mame?"

Renesmee nodded. "I saw him before. He's near… but far at the same time."

Edward and the others exchanged uneasy glances. Mame was watching. Waiting.

The final confrontation was coming.

The snowy field stretched wide under a pale gray sky. The Cullens and their gathered witnesses stood in formation — vampires from every corner of the world, the Denali coven, the Amazon sisters, Benjamin and Tia, Garrett, and many others. The Quileute wolves waited in the trees, massive and ready.

Garrett stepped forward, his voice ringing clear across the snow.

"We've been called here to witness a crime. A crime against our own kind. The Volturi want to destroy a child who has done nothing wrong. They want to destroy us for standing against tyranny. Today, we fight not just for Renesmee — we fight for our freedom. For the right to live without fear of ancient kings who believe they are gods!"

The witnesses roared in agreement.

Then the Volturi arrived.

A massive army crested the hill — dozens of elite guards in dark cloaks, Jane and Alec at the front, Felix and Demetri flanking Aro. The sheer number was overwhelming.

Aro smiled as he read minds from a distance. "A hybrid child… how fascinating. And yet… dangerous."

Alice suddenly appeared at the edge of the field with Nahuel and his aunt, proof that hybrid children could exist and grow peacefully. She stepped forward.

"Aro," she called. "We have proof. Renesmee is not like the immortal children of the past. She grows. She thinks. She loves."

Aro took Alice's hand and read her vision. For a moment, his smile faltered. Then he laughed softly.

"How poetic. But I have no intention of changing my decision."

He kicked Alice away with brutal force. The fight began.

Two of Aro's elite guards moved to stop Carlisle as he charged forward. The elder vampire threw them aside like ragdolls and leaped toward Aro. Aro met him mid-air. In one swift motion, he ripped Carlisle's head from his shoulders and tossed it aside before setting the body on fire.

Chaos erupted.

Both sides charged across the snow.

Then the world exploded.

BOOM.

A thunderous crack echoed across the mountains — louder than any gunshot the vampires had ever heard. The charge faltered as everyone looked up in confusion.

Three miles away, on a high rocky ridge hidden by trees and snow, Mame lay prone behind a massive Anzio 20mm anti-materiel rifle. A large ammo box sat beside him. His black coat was dusted with snow, his face cold and expressionless. He chambered one of the enormous 20mm rounds with a metallic click.

He fired.

The bullet traveled faster than any vampire could react. It tore through the battlefield like a comet.

It struck the first Volturi guard — the round punched straight through his skull, exploding out the back in a spray of stone-like fragments.

It continued and hit the second guard in the torso, punching a massive hole through his chest.

It finally stopped in the pelvis of a third, shattering bone and dropping him instantly.

The battlefield froze.

Edward's eyes widened in recognition as he stared toward the distant ridge.

"IT'S MAME!"

Mame fired again.

And again.

And again.

Each shot was a cataclysm. Vampires on both sides were torn apart — Volturi guards, witnesses, even Cullens caught in the crossfire. Mame did not discriminate. He fired with cold, mechanical precision, the massive rifle booming across the mountains like artillery.

Edward charged toward the Volturi line, roaring in fury and grief as friends and family fell around him. The slaughter had begun.

Mame kept firing, each round erasing another vampire from existence. His face remained blank, eyes locked on the battlefield through the scope. He was no longer fighting for the Cullens. He was no longer fighting for Bella.

He was punishing them all.

Only when Aro himself was finally in his sights did Mame pause for half a second.

He fired one final, perfect shot.

The massive 20mm round struck Aro center mass and detonated on impact, tearing the ancient king apart in a violent explosion of ancient stone and fire.

The battlefield fell into stunned silence as the last echoes of the rifle faded across the snow.

Mame slowly stood up on the distant ridge, the massive rifle still in his hands. He looked down at the carnage below — the dead and dying on both sides — then turned and disappeared into the trees without a word.

The war was over.(For them)
