Chapter 211 - Chapter 207: Polarized

The timeout ended with the score tied and the air inside the arena heavy enough to choke on.

Four minutes.

That was all the clock offered.

Four minutes to decide whether Health Track lived another week with dignity or got dragged back into the mud by whistles, bruises, and paperwork.

Four minutes for a four-versus-four game to turn into a confession.

Not romantic confession.

A confession of what they really were when the world tried to break them.

XH stood at the sideline, hands on his hips, breathing hard. Sweat dripped from his chin. His ribs ached. His jaw was clenched so tight it felt like his teeth might crack. He stared at the court like it was a door he had to kick down.

NS stood beside him, calm face, steady breathing, eyes sharp. He looked composed in a way that made him seem older than the rest of them, like he had learned long ago how to keep emotions folded neatly away.

JP paced a half step behind, muttering under his breath, the kind of muttering that was half prayer and half threat.

TZ rolled his shoulders and flexed his fingers, body preparing for contact like this was a fight disguised as a sport.

The referee stepped back into position, whistle ready.

The commentators were loud again.

"This is the moment," the excited voice boomed. "This is where the series turns!"

The analytical voice cut in, colder. "Watch fatigue. Watch fouls. Watch the mental cracks."

Mental cracks.

XH's chest tightened.

Because he felt his.

He could still hear June's voice cheering NS.

He could still hear Kitty's voice yelling for him.

He could still feel that rope-pull inside his ribs.

The whistle blew.

Play resumed.

VT's cohort attacked immediately, trying to land the first punch in the final stretch. VT drove into the lane with a hard shoulder, forcing contact. TZ stepped up to stop him, arms up, feet planted.

VT tried to twist around.

Bodies collided.

The ball popped loose for a split second.

NS reacted first, scooping it up and pushing the pace fast, faster than they had been running all quarter.

XH sprinted to the wing.

JP cut to the corner.

TZ trailed, ready for the screen.

NS drove straight at the defense like he didn't care if someone hit him. A defender stepped up.

NS didn't slow.

He pulled them in, then snapped a pass to XH.

XH caught the ball.

Defender closing.

Ribs burning.

Mind screaming.

He rose anyway.

Three point shot.

The ball arced.

Swish.

The Health Track section erupted so loud the sound hit the court like wind.

Kitty was on her feet instantly, voice raw and cracked.

"XH!"

She screamed it like it was a lifeline.

Like if she stopped saying it, the universe would take him away.

Students turned their heads again.

Whispers ignited.

Some laughed.

Some cheered with her.

Some stared like they were watching a romance scene in the middle of a war.

June heard it.

June's jaw clenched.

She didn't stand for XH.

Not now.

Not because she didn't feel anything.

Because she was making a point, even if only she understood it.

VT's cohort answered fast with a drive and a kick-out shot.

They hit a three.

The crowd roared again.

The score tightened.

Kitty's hands trembled as she sat down for a second, breath shaking.

June stood up then.

Not for XH.

For NS.

Because NS had just made the rotation that forced the shot to be rushed.

June's voice cut through.

"NS! Good!"

NS looked up, surprised, then nodded slightly like he had accepted the praise as fuel.

XH felt heat flash in his chest.

Not jealousy.

Anger.

A sharp sting that felt like betrayal's cousin.

Because it didn't feel like June supporting the team.

It felt like June supporting NS against XH.

It felt like June saying, I can be loud too, and I can choose someone else's name to say.

XH's jaw clenched harder.

He forced his eyes back to the court.

He refused to let his face betray him.

Another possession.

NS slowed the pace, dribbling at the top. JP set a screen. TZ cut to the lane. XH drifted to the corner again.

NS faked a drive, then swung the ball to JP.

JP hesitated, then shot.

Missed.

Rebound battle.

Bodies collided.

TZ grabbed it and kicked out to NS.

NS pulled up and hit a deep three.

The crowd screamed.

June stood instantly, louder than before.

"NS!"

Her voice wasn't shaky.

It wasn't accidental.

It was deliberate.

The arena heard it.

VT heard it.

Kitty heard it.

XH heard it like someone had slapped his bruise.

NS turned his head slightly again.

His eyes found June.

That faint smile came.

It was small.

But it was real.

XH's stomach twisted.

He didn't look at June.

He couldn't.

If he looked, he might crack.

Kitty sat down slowly, fingers curling into her palm. She didn't understand all the layers, but she felt the shift. She felt June's voice becoming a weapon.

Cherry leaned slightly toward NC, murmuring something sharp.

NC didn't respond, but her posture tightened.

Jihye's eyes stayed fixed on the court, expression distant, like she was watching a prophecy play out.

Two minutes left.

Health Track up by three.

Not safe.

Never safe.

VT attacked again, driving hard to draw a foul on XH.

He slammed into XH's chest, shoulder into ribs.

Pain flashed white.

XH stumbled.

The ball rolled loose.

The referee hesitated.

Then blew the whistle.

Foul on XH.

Health Track section erupted in boos.

Kitty stood and shouted so loud her voice broke.

"NO! HE GOT HIT!"

Students turned again, listening to her. Kitty was becoming part of the game's story, louder than the referees.

June didn't shout.

Not about the foul.

She held her breath, eyes tight.

VT stepped to the line and sank the free throws.

Health Track lead shrank to one.

The arena went wild.

The commentators screamed over each other.

"This is chaos!" the excited voice shouted. "This is pressure!"

The analytical voice cut in. "Watch XH's body language. He's holding back something."

Holding back.

Yes.

XH was holding back his ribs from collapsing.

Holding back his anger from turning into a punch.

Holding back the part of him that wanted to scream at June, why are you doing this.

Holding back the part of him that wanted to grab NS by the collar and ask, why are you letting her.

NS brought the ball up again.

His calm was like a mask.

He signaled the play again.

JP moved to set a screen.

TZ positioned low.

XH drifted to the wing.

NS drove, drew two defenders, then kicked the ball out to XH.

XH caught.

A defender rushed hard, arms wide.

XH hesitated a fraction.

Not because he was scared.

Because he could hear Kitty's voice.

He could hear June's voice too.

Names in the air like arrows.

He rose anyway and shot.

The ball hit rim.

Bounced.

The crowd gasped.

Kitty's hands flew to her mouth.

June's heart clenched.

Rebound battle.

TZ grabbed the rebound and got shoved in the back.

No whistle.

TZ stumbled, still got the ball out to NS.

NS drove into the lane and got hit mid-air.

Whistle.

Finally.

The arena erupted.

NS stepped to the line.

June stood again, loud enough to be heard across the court.

"NS, you got it!"

NS's head turned slightly.

That smile again.

The smile was a spark.

XH felt it land in his chest like a match dropped into gasoline.

XH forced himself still.

He stared at the floor for a second.

Then he looked up at the court.

NS sank the first free throw.

Sank the second.

Health Track up by three again.

One minute left.

VT's cohort pushed fast.

They launched a three.

Missed.

JP grabbed the rebound and hugged it like it was oxygen.

The crowd screamed.

Security stood closer at the edges now, watching celebration like it was a crime.

NS called for the ball.

JP passed it reluctantly because JP never liked giving away control.

NS slowed the pace deliberately, dribbling near half-court, forcing VT's team to foul or watch time bleed.

VT rushed him, trying to steal.

NS pivoted away cleanly, then passed to XH.

XH caught.

A defender crashed into him immediately, trying to force a turnover.

XH held steady.

He didn't dribble.

He didn't panic.

He kept his body between the ball and the defender, feet planted, shoulders braced, ribs screaming.

The defender slapped his wrist.

Whistle.

Foul.

Kitty screamed again, this time relief and rage mixed.

"Finally!"

XH stepped to the line.

The arena quieted.

He bounced the ball once.

Twice.

He could feel the eyes on him.

The institution eyes.

The student eyes.

Kitty's eyes.

June's eyes.

NS's eyes.

VT's eyes, sharp and hateful.

XH exhaled slowly.

He shot.

Swish.

Kitty's voice broke into a sob-shout.

"Yes!"

XH shot again.

Swish.

Health Track up by five.

Twenty seconds left.

VT's cohort rushed, launched a three.

Made it.

Two point game again.

The arena exploded.

Kitty's hands trembled.

June's mouth went dry.

NS called for the ball.

Referee tossed it in.

VT's team fouled immediately.

NS stepped to the line.

June stood again, loud.

"NS!"

Kitty sat down hard, chest tight.

Because she felt it now.

June was not just cheering.

June was choosing where her loudness went.

NS sank the first.

Missed the second.

Ball loose.

Scramble.

TZ grabbed it and got fouled.

TZ stepped to the line, breathing hard.

He sank both.

Four point game again.

Eight seconds left.

VT's cohort rushed and launched a desperate shot.

Missed.

Buzzer.

Game over.

Health Track won Game 4.

The scoreboard updated.

Series tied 2–2.

The arena erupted like a dam breaking.

Students screamed.

Some cried.

Some hugged strangers.

Kitty cried openly now, shoulders shaking. She didn't care who saw. She didn't care who posted.

June exhaled hard, eyes stinging. Her face stayed composed, but her hands trembled in her lap. She stared at the court like she was watching something bigger than a game.

On the court, XH felt relief and exhaustion collide.

He wanted to smile.

He couldn't fully.

Because even in victory, he could feel the cracks.

The staff moved in immediately, as always, trying to choke celebration with procedure.

"Players," the supervisor announced over the microphone, voice calm, "report for post-game review."

Boos erupted.

Security stepped closer.

The institution couldn't let joy breathe.

As the players walked off the court, Kitty shouted XH's name one more time, voice cracking.

XH looked up at her.

Their eyes met.

Kitty's face was wet with tears.

Her gaze was full of faith and hurt at the same time.

XH's chest tightened.

He wanted to say something.

He couldn't.

June watched that eye contact.

She felt the jealousy flare again, sharp and immediate.

So she stood and shouted too.

Not XH's name.

NS's.

"NS!"

The arena heard it again.

NS looked up and met June's gaze.

He nodded.

That faint smile again.

XH felt something twist.

He didn't look at June.

He looked straight ahead.

His jaw clenched.

JP noticed.

TZ noticed.

NS probably noticed too.

But nobody said it out loud.

Because saying it would make it real.

And right now, they had to survive the institution first.

In the review room, the papers came again.

Signatures.

Warnings.

Behavior clauses.

The supervisor spoke calmly.

"We remind all students that any disruptive conduct, including provocative cheering, may be subject to review."

Kitty's loudness.

June's loudness.

They were already framing it.

XH signed again, hand steady.

NS signed, calm.

JP signed with rage disguised as a scribble.

TZ signed without expression.

When they finally stepped outside again, rain was falling.

Not a storm.

But steady.

No forecast.

No warning.

The compound lights reflected off wet pavement.

Students moved in clusters, whispering about the game, about Kitty's shouting, about June shouting for NS, about the way the two girls' voices had turned into opposing banners.

And XH walked back to the dorm with anger sitting heavy in his chest.

He had won the game.

Tied the series.

Bought them time.

But inside him, something else had lost ground.

The trust he used to carry with NS without thinking felt thinner now.

Like a thread being pulled, slowly, deliberately, until one day it would snap.

NS leaned back and watched the room like a guard.

JP tried to study but kept tapping his pencil in frustration.

TZ quietly nudged his pencil away once, a small gesture that said stop, we need focus.

XH stared at his page.

His mind wouldn't settle.

He felt the anger again.

He felt it aimed at June for using cheers like a lever.

He felt it aimed at NS for accepting it, for smiling, for letting his gaze meet June's like it mattered.

He felt it aimed at himself for not choosing anything cleanly, for letting everyone live in ambiguity.

XH's pencil snapped suddenly.

The sound was small, but in a controlled room it rang.

JP froze. TZ looked up. NS turned his head.

XH stared at the broken pencil like it had betrayed him.

A staff member glanced over from across the room.

XH forced his breathing steady and raised his hand slightly, calm voice. "Sorry."

The staff member looked away.

JP leaned in and whispered, "You okay."

XH nodded too fast. "Yeah."

NS's voice came low, calm, but it landed like a needle. "Control your reactions."

XH's jaw tightened.

He hated that NS said it like a command.

He hated that he couldn't argue because it was true.

TZ slid XH a spare pencil quietly.

XH took it without looking at him, then forced himself back into notes.

In the girls' section, Kitty noticed the snapped pencil.

Her chest tightened.

June noticed it too.

June's eyes flicked up once, then down again, like she filed it away.

After study hall, as students filed out, Kitty ended up walking near XH by accident.

Or not accident.

The hallway crowd pushed them into similar pace.

Kitty's voice came quiet. "Your ribs."

XH swallowed. "Still there."

Kitty nodded, eyes down. "They stamped my name."

XH's chest tightened. "I saw."

Kitty's fingers twisted around her notebook. "I didn't mean to cause trouble."

XH shook his head. "You didn't."

Kitty looked up, eyes tired. "It feels like everything I do becomes trouble."

XH wanted to say, it's not you, it's them.

He didn't.

Because that didn't comfort her.

Kitty's voice softened further. "Last night… I'm sorry."

XH's heart clenched. "Don't."

Kitty's eyes shimmered. "I didn't want to make you choose in the rain."

XH swallowed. "You didn't. I made it complicated."

Kitty's mouth trembled. "You always do."

The words weren't cruel.

They were honest.

XH felt them hit deep.

June walked a few steps behind, hearing just enough to sense the intimacy.

Not romance intimacy.

Pain intimacy.

The kind that made jealousy grow roots.

June's jaw tightened.

She didn't interrupt.

Not now.

She waited.

Waiting was June's strength.

And her weapon.

Kitty walked away toward her dorm, shoulders tight.

XH stood for a moment, watching her go.

NS appeared beside him quietly.

"You should talk to June," NS said.

XH's head snapped slightly. "Why."

NS's face stayed calm. "Because she's making moves."

XH's stomach twisted. "Moves."

NS nodded. "She's loud for me. Loud on purpose."

XH's jaw clenched.

NS's calm voice continued, and it landed wrong. "It works."

XH's hands curled into fists.

He kept his voice low. "Stop."

NS blinked once. "Stop what."

XH's throat tightened. "Stop enjoying it."

NS's eyes sharpened slightly, a crack in the calm. "You think I'm enjoying it."

XH's voice stayed quiet, but the edge showed. "You smiled."

NS exhaled slowly. "June cheered. I acknowledged it."

XH's jaw clenched. "That's not nothing."

NS's gaze held steady. "Then decide."

That word again.

Decide.

XH felt the heavy anger rise.

He swallowed it.

He had to.

Because the hallway had eyes.

Because the institution wanted fractures.

Because VT would use any crack to break them.

XH forced his hands open and stepped back slightly.

"Don't talk to me like that," XH said quietly.

NS's voice stayed calm, but colder now. "Then don't act like a victim when you refuse to choose."

The sentence hit like a punch.

XH's vision narrowed.

For a split second he wanted to swing.

He didn't.

Because he was not going to give them a reason.

JP appeared suddenly, stepping between them without looking like he was doing it.

"Hey," JP said loudly, smiling like a comedian. "We're going to propaganda hall, right. Because we love MALT."

TZ joined, expression flat. "Yes. Love."

NS's face smoothed back into calm. He stepped away.

XH's chest felt like it was burning.

JP whispered as they walked, "Not here. Not in the hallways."

XH nodded once, throat tight.

That night, the propaganda hall was packed.

Students sat with blank faces while the screen showed bright images, speeches, smiling soldiers, heroic music. Lies dressed as cinema.

Health Track students ditched as usual, slipping out through side exits, meeting outside in small clusters.

Rain started again.

Light at first.

Then steady.

No forecast.

No warning.

Just the sky tapping the ground like it was counting down.

As XH walked back toward the dorm, he saw Kitty at a distance under the awning, speaking quietly with NC.

Kitty's face looked tired.

June walked behind her group with Cherry and Jihye, posture composed, eyes sharp.

June's eyes met XH's briefly.

Not soft.

Not angry.

Focused.

Like she was planning her next loud move.

XH looked away first.

His chest hurt.

Not only ribs.

The kind of hurt that came from feeling surrounded by people who wanted something from you.

A staff member's voice boomed from a speaker near the dorm compound.

"Reminder. Game 5 will proceed under enhanced oversight. All students are expected to maintain appropriate conduct. Any disruptive behavior will result in immediate review."

Immediate review.

The red board waited.

The institution smiled politely.

XH went inside and lay on his bed staring at the ceiling.

JP muttered in the dark about how none of this was fair.

TZ breathed slowly like he was trying to sleep.

NS stayed quiet at his desk.

XH stared at the ceiling and listened to the rain.

He realized something that scared him more than the institution.

The games were not the only thing being decided.

Something inside him was shifting.

Brotherhood was becoming a battlefield.

Love was becoming a weapon.

And the space before Game 5 felt like the last calm breath before a storm that would not care who it drowned.

Outside, rain kept falling.

Inside, the story tightened.
