Chapter 215 - Chapter 211: Half a Story

The ball rose like a verdict.

For a split second, time felt clean. No whispers. No stamps. No red board. No accusations. Just a spinning orange ball under bright lights and the sound of a crowd that wanted something to happen.

Then the whistle, the jump, the first collision of bodies, and reality slammed back in.

XH's fingertips grazed the ball but VT's center tipped it first, swatting it back toward his teammate with a sharp, practiced motion. Their cohort moved like they had rehearsed this opening a hundred times. Not just basketball rehearsed. The optics rehearsed.

The crowd roared anyway.

The announcer's voice boomed something about pride and unity, and it sounded like a lie wrapped in music.

Health Track snapped into defense. NS called out rotations with a steady voice. JP shadowed his man tight, jaw clenched. TZ boxed out hard, shoulders squared. XH slid into position, ribs already protesting, but his eyes stayed locked.

First possession for VT's cohort.

They ran a quick set, two screens, a hard drive, and a kick-out to the corner. The shooter rose.

Miss.

The crowd gasped, then surged.

TZ grabbed the rebound like he was yanking oxygen from the air and snapped it to NS.

NS pushed pace immediately, not reckless, just firm. Like he wanted to set the tone before the institution could.

XH sprinted to the wing.

JP cut to the corner.

TZ trailed for the screen.

NS drove to draw contact, stopped on a dime, and kicked out to XH.

The ball hit XH's palms and the world narrowed.

A defender closed hard.

Cameras zoomed.

Somewhere in the stands, a few voices hissed the word stalker like it was a chant they had been waiting to use.

XH didn't flinch.

He rose and shot.

Swish.

The Health Track section erupted.

Not as loud as previous games. People were more careful today, aware of "conduct." But the cheer still hit the air like a wave.

Kitty didn't stand.

She didn't scream.

She just pressed her hands together in front of her mouth for a second, eyes glossy, then lowered them, gaze glued to XH.

Quiet faith.

It felt louder than yelling.

June didn't stand either.

She clapped twice, controlled, face calm. Then she looked away as if she was too disciplined to feed the crowd's story.

Cherry leaned forward with a small smirk like she was watching a chess match rather than basketball.

NC stayed steady beside Anna.

Jihye's fingers tapped her knee once, then stopped.

On the other side, Wink sat with VT's group, chin lifted, expression composed. Not trembling, not crying, not fragile. The kind of composure that made the accusation feel staged to anyone who knew how fear looked.

The game tightened immediately.

VT's cohort answered with a deep three.

Hit.

Their section cheered louder, more confidently. Like they were allowed to.

The score tied.

The commentators grew louder too.

"This is a heavyweight opening," the excited one shouted. "You can feel the pressure in the air."

The analytical voice cut in. "Watch the fouls. Watch who the whistle protects."

That sentence landed in XH's chest like a warning.

Because everyone in Health Track already knew.

Whistle protection was the institution's favorite weapon.

Next possession, NS drove again and took a bump.

No whistle.

He stumbled, kept control, passed out to JP.

JP shot.

Rim.

Rebound fight.

TZ grabbed it and got shoved from behind. His shoulder jerked forward.

No whistle.

TZ's eyes flashed but he kept the ball alive, tipping it to XH.

XH pulled it down, pivoted, and got hacked on the wrist.

Whistle.

Finally.

But not the one he expected.

Foul on XH.

The arena went quiet for half a beat, then erupted into a strange mixed sound. Some booing. Some laughing. Some murmurs that sounded like, of course.

XH froze for a fraction.

His jaw clenched.

His ribs tightened.

He looked at the referee, wanting to speak, wanting to ask how, wanting to demand.

NS stepped in immediately, calm hand raised slightly, voice low.

"Don't," NS said.

Not a command shouted.

A warning.

XH swallowed it.

He backed away.

The referee signaled and handed the ball to VT's cohort.

The crowd's murmur returned, thicker now. Not just basketball talk. Narrative talk.

XH heard the words drifting.

They're watching him.

They're waiting for him to snap.

He's guilty.

No proof but you can tell.

It was disgusting how quickly people turned uncertainty into certainty.

Kitty's hands clenched in her lap, knuckles pale.

June's posture stiffened slightly.

Cherry's eyes narrowed.

NC leaned toward Anna, whispering something soothing.

Jihye's gaze stayed distant, as if she was watching something larger than this arena.

VT's cohort hit two free throws.

Up by two.

NS brought the ball up again, calm, eyes sharp. He called the play, pointed, shifted.

He passed to XH again.

XH caught.

A defender closed with a grin.

"You're on camera," the defender muttered under his breath.

XH's jaw clenched.

The defender leaned closer as if sharing a secret. "Smile."

XH didn't.

He drove instead, hard, shoulder low, taking contact in his ribs that made his vision flash.

He kicked out to TZ under the basket.

TZ laid it in.

Tie game.

For a moment, the crowd sounded like sport again. For a moment, the ball was just a ball.

Then the whistle.

Another foul.

On XH again.

This one was even softer, the kind of foul that exists only when someone wants it to.

XH stopped.

His hands opened and closed once like he was trying to shake anger out of his fingers.

JP turned to the ref with his mouth open.

TZ stepped forward half a step.

NS cut in quickly, voice low but firm.

"Back," NS said to them, eyes sharp.

JP swallowed his words like he was chewing glass.

TZ stepped back.

XH swallowed too.

But this time swallowing hurt.

Because it felt like being punished for existing.

The announcer called XH's fouls loud for the whole arena to hear.

"Captain has two."

The crowd murmured again.

Two fouls early was not just foul trouble.

It was control trouble.

Kitty's eyes widened slightly.

June's jaw tightened.

Wink's expression stayed calm.

VT's smile grew faintly.

VT drove again, drew contact on NS this time.

Whistle.

Foul on NS.

NS didn't react.

He just nodded once like he accepted it.

June's phone lit up in her lap. She glanced down quickly, then turned it face down again.

XH's stomach tightened.

He wasn't sure if he was imagining it now, seeing patterns everywhere, but he felt like June and NS had their own quiet world running parallel to this one.

Kitty noticed June's phone motion too, a small flick of her eyes, then back to the court.

The score kept swinging.

Health Track hit a three through JP.

VT's cohort answered with a drive and one.

TZ got called for a travel that looked like nothing.

JP got bumped in the air and no whistle.

The crowd responded to every moment like it was proof of something bigger.

When XH made a shot, some people cheered and some people went quiet like they didn't want to clap for someone accused.

When XH got called for a foul, some people laughed like they were watching karma.

The institution didn't have to say a word.

The crowd did the work.

Midway through the first quarter, NS set a screen for XH, then rolled.

XH drove and passed back to NS.

NS rose for a three.

Swish.

A clean shot.

A beautiful shot.

The crowd erupted.

June clapped immediately, controlled, then stood slightly and called out, clear enough to be heard but not wild.

"NS, good."

NS turned his head without meaning to.

He saw June.

That faint smile returned.

XH felt his chest tighten.

Not because NS scored.

Because NS smiled at June's voice again.

Kitty didn't react loudly.

But her gaze flicked to June for half a second, then back to the court.

June sat down, calm, like she had done nothing special.

Cherry's mouth twitched, amused by the tension.

Jihye's fingers tapped once again, then stopped.

The first quarter ended with VT's cohort up by four.

Health Track went to the bench.

XH sat down, breathing hard.

His ribs ached.

His jaw was tight.

The assistant coach, a staff member with a neutral face, approached with a clipboard and spoke like he was reading from a manual.

"Keep control," he said.

Keep control.

XH wanted to laugh.

They weren't asking him to keep control. They were asking him to stay quiet so the institution could keep control.

NS leaned in, voice low. "You're in foul trouble. Don't gamble."

XH stared at the floor for a second.

He wanted to say, I'm not gambling. They're hunting.

He didn't.

He nodded once.

JP muttered, "They're cooking us."

TZ wiped sweat from his forehead. "We still got time."

The second quarter began with Health Track trying to shift momentum.

NS ran point, directing traffic. JP and TZ moved like they were trying to build a wall.

XH played more careful now, more conservative, not because he wanted to, because he had to.

Every time XH moved, it felt like the whistle hovered above him.

VT's cohort pressed harder, bumping, talking, grinning.

A defender leaned into XH and whispered, "You're trending."

XH's jaw clenched.

He forced himself to ignore it.

Kitty's gaze stayed locked.

She didn't shout.

But her eyes looked like they were shouting.

June stayed composed, clapping occasionally, never too loud, but always precise.

Every time NS did something good, June's support appeared like a small spark.

Not huge.

Not blatant.

Enough.

Enough to be seen.

Enough to be felt.

Enough to make XH's anger stay awake.

Halfway through the second quarter, Health Track made a run.

JP hit a three.

TZ forced a steal.

NS drove and scored through contact.

The crowd roared louder, momentum shifting.

XH got the ball at the top, defender closing.

He hesitated a fraction.

Not fear.

Calculation.

He drove left, pulled back, and shot a mid-range jumper.

Swish.

Kitty's hands flew to her mouth again, silent celebration.

June clapped twice.

The score tightened to one.

The arena sounded like a real game again.

Then the whistle.

A foul on XH.

Third foul.

The arena erupted in that ugly mixed sound again.

Some booing.

Some laughter.

Some murmurs like, he can't control himself.

XH froze.

His vision narrowed.

He felt heat surge into his chest.

He wanted to shout.

He wanted to throw the ball.

He wanted to slam his fist into something.

He didn't.

NS stepped in again, voice low, urgent.

"Walk away," NS said.

XH's hands trembled.

He forced them to stop.

He walked away.

But the walk away felt like swallowing poison.

The coach pulled XH to the bench.

"You sit," the coach said, as if punishing him.

XH sat, breathing hard.

His jaw clenched so tight it hurt.

VT's cohort took advantage immediately.

They hit a three.

They hit a driving layup.

They pushed the lead back up to seven.

Kitty's face tightened.

June's eyes sharpened.

Cherry leaned forward, interested now.

Wink's expression stayed calm.

VT glanced toward XH on the bench and smiled like this was exactly what he wanted.

The commentators fed it.

"Captain in foul trouble," the excited one shouted. "This changes everything."

The analytical voice cut in. "And the crowd is watching him. Every move is magnified."

Magnified.

Yes.

Because a story was being built on his back.

At the two-minute mark before halftime, XH re-entered cautiously with instructions to play safe, not aggressive, not angry.

XH nodded.

He did not trust himself.

The ball moved. The pace slowed.

NS kept the team organized.

JP and TZ fought for rebounds.

XH shot only when it was clean.

They clawed the lead down to five.

Kitty's gaze stayed steady, quiet, anchored.

June's claps were controlled.

When NS hit a deep jumper, June's voice slipped out softly, just enough.

"Good."

NS's head turned slightly again.

That faint smile again.

XH felt his chest tighten.

His anger sat heavy in his throat.

He swallowed it again.

Halftime arrived with VT's cohort up by five.

The buzzer sounded like a sigh of relief and a warning at the same time.

Players filed toward locker rooms under staff supervision.

Cameras followed.

The announcer boomed. "Halftime.

Remember, this game is binding. Winner determines placement."

Binding again.

Always binding.

As XH walked off the court, he heard someone in the crowd shout, loud enough to sting.

"Show the photos!"

The arena murmured.

Someone else laughed.

Someone else yelled, "CCTV!"

Kitty's face went pale.

June's jaw tightened.

Cherry stood slightly, furious, then sat down, forcing herself calm.

NC wrapped an arm around Anna.

Jihye's fingers stopped tapping entirely.

In the tunnel, XH's breathing grew tight.

Not panic.

Anger.

Humiliation.

Fear.

All mixing into one.

JP leaned close, voice harsh. "Ignore it."

TZ nodded. "We win. We leave. That's it."

NS's voice was calm, almost too calm. "Second half is ours."

XH looked at NS for half a beat.

He wanted to trust him.

He wanted to.

But trust was thinning.

In the locker room, the air smelled like sweat and disinfectant.

A staff member stood near the door like a guard.

The coach spoke fast, pointing at a whiteboard.

"We adjust. We protect XH from fouls. We push through NS."

Push through NS.

XH's chest tightened.

He didn't argue.

He couldn't.

Not now.

But the sentence landed like a wedge.

Outside, rain picked up against the arena roof.

No forecast.

No warning.

Just rain, steady, stubborn, like the sky had decided to mirror the pressure.

XH sat on the bench, towel over his head for a second, breathing slowly.

He realized the worst part wasn't being down five.

It was that the game was only half done, and the story against him was already ahead.

The second half would decide the score.

And it would decide whether his name survived the cameras.
