Kifu said a few words to Fukuda Gen before taking his leave.

Asuma was left standing in the corridor. He looked completely bewildered.

It was one thing for the kid to expose his smoking habit. But he actually... swiped the whole pack!

Chapter 5: The Red Corpse

Kifu walked through the village. He took in the prosperity and vitality of Konoha.

By the time he returned to the Mortuary, the sun had already set. Moonlight covered Konoha like a thin veil. It gave the village a hazy, beautiful glow.

A few Medical Ninjas stood at the entrance.

They saw him and handed over several Scrolls containing bodies. After a few brief pleasantries, they left.

Even Medical Ninjas did not like corpses. No one wanted to stay in a place like the Mortuary for long.

Maruyama Kifu preferred the peace and quiet anyway.

It was nice to be alone with a group of silent bodies.

However, he froze as he began placing the bodies onto the wooden beds.

He stopped in front of a male corpse. The man was burly and covered in scars.

The body was not glowing with the white, green, or yellow light he was used to. It was glowing red!

The light was faint.

White represented a Genin. Green represented a Chunin. Yellow represented a Jonin. That meant red...

Maruyama Kifu felt a surge of excitement.

'Kage-level!'

Then he shook his head. He immediately dismissed the thought.

That was impossible.

He knew almost every famous Kage-level powerhouse in the Ninja world. This included those from Konoha and the other four Great Hidden Villages. The man's face was damaged, but it was still recognizable.

Of course, there might be powerful Kage-level Shinobi who remained hidden.

But such people did not care about fame. Why would they show up now? The Third Ninja War was just beginning to stir.

Kifu guessed the red light did not mean a Kage-level powerhouse.

It likely represented the blurry level between Jonin and Kage-level. An Elite Jonin or a Pseudo-Kage.

There were not many Ninjas like this. But there were still far more of them than Kage-level powerhouses.

'This is enough!'

Power levels for Shinobi were a general concept. The standards changed during different eras.

Some Ninjas had the overall strength of a Genin. But they were promoted to Chunin because of one outstanding skill.

Other Ninjas could burst with power rivaling a Jonin or even a Kage-level. Yet they remained a Genin due to regulations or hidden strength. The most famous examples were Might Dai and Naruto.

Konoha was famous for this.

There was even a saying among fans in his past life. "Better to provoke a Konoha Jonin than a Konoha Genin." The terror of a Konoha Genin was beyond imagination.

Technically, he was also just a Genin.

'What a shame.'

He had used up his daily limit. The System did not provide any notifications.

Kifu looked at the body glowing with an enticing red light. He felt like he was suffering from an internet addiction.

He felt like a gamer who just found a legendary weapon but ran out of playtime. He had no money for the internet cafe.

It was painful.

But he had to endure it.

'This is the true meaning of being a Ninja.' Kifu smiled.

He would have to wait until tomorrow to pull the prize.

'This adds some suspense. Maybe I will get something unexpected.'

He comforted himself with these thoughts.

He still had work to do.

He finished treating the wounds and cleaning the blood off the bodies. It was already late at night.

Kifu felt tired. The initial excitement had faded. He cleaned up and prepared to rest.

*Crackle... crackle...*

He perked up his ears. He heard a slight movement coming from outside.

It sounded like someone was moving nearby.

It was the middle of the night. The Mortuary was located in a remote corner of Konoha. It was surrounded by a forest.

No one would be here at this hour for a good reason.

If it were the Anbu, they would come directly. They would not sneak around.

Kifu frowned. He became alert.

He did not know who it was. But if they were just passing by, he did not want to interact with them.

Konoha had plenty of powerhouses. A lowly Genin like him did not need to worry.

He blew out the candle. He stood silently inside the Mortuary.

A moment later.

"Phew..."

Kifu let out a long breath. He listened to the footsteps. The person seemed to have seen the light go out and left.

Then.
