Nora's POV
"Use me?" The words slip from my lips. "For what purpose?"
"I can't say for certain, but I'm determined to uncover the truth."
My pulse quickens and my chest constricts. Panic threatens to overwhelm me once more, and everything feels impossibly heavy. I wish this glass held wine instead of water. Better yet, whiskey. Tonight definitely calls for something stronger.
"What's that?" James gestures toward the feather.
"Just something I picked up." I retrieve it from his grasp, and suddenly hope floods through me. The coven will take me back. I haven't committed any real wrongdoing. We'll track down those vampires and eliminate them, which means dismantling a dangerous criminal organization too.
"Nora?"
I snap back to reality, pulling my gaze from the feather. My mind wandered again. "I discovered it somewhere, and it feels significant."
James moves closer and inhales its scent. "There's something off about it."
"Off doesn't tell me much. Can you be more specific?"
