Nora's POV
The gunshot echoes through the room like thunder, and terror floods my veins as I watch James stagger backward. My scream tears from my throat as I twist desperately in his protective embrace, certain the bullet found its mark in his heart.
James releases a low growl, more irritated than pained, as he examines the wound on his shoulder. Blood seeps through his shirt, but his voice carries deadly authority when he speaks. "You nearly shot her." His words slice through the tension like a blade as he turns toward the trembling officer, fangs gleaming. "You almost killed my pregnant wife."
The officer's hands shake as he keeps his weapon trained on us, his eyes wide with the kind of fear that makes men do stupid things. He fired purely on instinct when James moved, even though my husband had been stepping away from him.
