"What did you just say?" My eyes lock onto the television screen, refusing to blink. Mack weaves between my legs, his warm fur brushing against my ankles as he senses my rising tension.
"See for yourself." Antonia grabs the remote and rewinds the live broadcast, stopping at a point before we entered the room. She hits play just as the news anchor begins speaking.
"In an unprecedented move by the traditionally conservative Senator Soren Sutton, a controversial new bill has emerged. Spearheaded by his son, local politician Phoenix Sutton, this legislation would legally strip insurance coverage—both health and general—from anyone married to or voluntarily employed by a vampire."
The words hit me like a physical blow. "What?" I stammer, my voice barely above a whisper. "This can't be happening. This isn't real."
