Katherine's gaze shifts between Phoenix, Livia, and me with the precision of a predator sizing up her prey. Most people from my Academy graduating class know fragments of the story about how Charlette rescued me from that science lab prison. Whispers follow me now, wild rumors claiming I escaped from some supernatural detention facility. I've never bothered confirming or denying anything. Part of me doesn't care what people think, and another part refuses to dissect those memories. It's impossible to bury feelings when you're constantly forced to relive them.
But Katherine knows exactly what happened. She knows the Suttons aren't my blood family.
