Chapter 140 - [180] : Variation

When [I Am Not God] strode alone into the center of the ancient arena, guardian spear in hand and its energy field shimmering, the entire stadium seemed to fall still.

His magnificent golden Custodian armor, a masterpiece of craftsmanship refined to its absolute pinnacle, gleamed beneath the arena lights like flowing liquid metal, standing in stark contrast to the weathered sands around him.

Most intimidating of all was his size, far surpassing that of a standard Astartes. Even with power armor taken into account, Custodians were already taller and more powerfully built than Space Marines on average.

Yet [I Am Not God], standing upon the sand, looked like a golden giant descended from myth, towering more than two heads above the four Astartes approaching side by side from the opposite end.

His was not a clumsy bulk, but a perfectly proportioned form that embodied supreme strength, meticulous genetic enhancement, and absolute authority. Simply standing there with his spear in hand, he radiated a silent pressure like a mountain bearing down upon all before it.

This was the majesty of the Emperor's personal guard, the most direct expression of the Master of Mankind's military might.

Opposite him, four figures emerged from the gate and formed a line, each bearing different colors and a distinctly different presence:

A Thousand Sons warrior in interwoven dark blue and crimson, surrounded by a subtle psychic aura, See You Tomorrow.

A World Eater still wearing the practical gray-white colors of the Legion's War Hounds era, though an unmistakable savagery already seeped from his presence, Scorchwind.

An Emperor's Children warrior in splendid, ornate armor decorated with elaborate patterns and golden trim, radiating elegance and pride, Rivane.

A Death Guard warrior in heavy, unadorned dark-green armor, emanating silent resilience and the faintest trace of a sweet, decaying scent, EndlessSpring.

Four against one.

Four Chosen who had passed equally rigorous selection, each representing the defining traits of their Legion and the skills of a top player, against a special individual temporarily granted the identity of a Custodian.

By any measure, it was an extraordinarily uneven contest. Yet that very imbalance gave the match incomparable drama and suspense.

In the Death Guard section of the stands, silence reigned.

Their Primarch, Mortarion, the Death Lord, stood as silently as a perfect reflection of his sons.

Exiled to a death world in his childhood, he had survived through sheer tenacity, forging an iron will and an extraordinary tolerance for pain. He was renowned for his endurance and reticence.

He merely watched the arena below in silence, the shadows beneath his hood concealing every hint of expression. It was as though this unexpected duel, like his philosophy of death as eternal, gradual, and inevitable, was merely another insignificant yet unavoidable stage in a far greater narrative.

His silence was itself a statement.

Then, just as the oppressive standoff reached its peak and the war drums were about to sound for this wildly uneven battle, something changed.

The Emperor's Children warrior in magnificent purple armor, [Rivane], moved without warning, her elegant power sword in hand.

But she did not charge toward the Custodian.

Instead, she pivoted with extraordinary grace, her power sword tracing a cold arc through the air. Its point was not aimed at [I Am Not God], but held steadily toward the three temporary allies standing beside her.

At the same time, her steps were light and swift. Within moments, she had withdrawn from the four-warrior formation and taken up position slightly behind [I Am Not God], standing at the golden giant's side.

Two against three!

The situation reversed so abruptly that everyone was left staring in disbelief.

"What?! Aren't we supposed to be on the same fucking side?!" [Scorchwind] roared uncontrollably, as though flames might erupt from behind the World Eater's visor.

His chainaxe buzzed furiously as he pointed it toward the suddenly defecting Rivane.

"Wasn't this supposed to be four of us against one golden bodyguard in an exhibition match?! What the hell is this?! Switching sides right before the battle?!"

Faced with Scorchwind's accusation, Rivane seemed slightly embarrassed. Yet when her voice came through her helmet, it carried an almost matter-of-fact lightness.

"Sorry, everyone. I Am Not God and I... know each other in real life. We're classmates."

The reactions of the Primarchs in the stands were even more remarkable.

Magnus's single eye narrowed instantly. He was not angry so much as displeased and deeply curious. He turned toward the brother beside him who was renowned for perfection and elegance, Fulgrim, Primarch of the Emperor's Children.

His voice carried a note of interrogation.

"My brother, do you have nothing to say about your child's decision to... reconsider her allegiance in the middle of the field? This does not seem entirely consistent with the traditions of our gathering."

Fulgrim, the Phoenician, merely smiled with effortless grace, as though everything unfolding before him were nothing more than an entertaining play.

He lightly smoothed an imaginary crease from his long silver-white hair and replied in a rich, melodious voice.

"Magnus, my brother, why so serious? Father has not intervened, has He?"

He looked down at Rivane with a strange hint of admiration in his eyes.

"Look. She has made her choice, one founded upon a more fundamental bond. On the battlefield, recognizing and following the path one believes to be correct or important is itself an expression of graceful composure and decisiveness, is it not?"

"My children pursue perfection, and perfection has never taken only one form."

His words deftly evaded the accusation of betraying an ally, elevating the act into a personalized choice of one's own path. It was sophistry and aesthetic supremacy in the purest style of the Emperor's Children.

Angron's reaction, meanwhile, was far more direct and violent.

He slammed one hand against the railing before him and bellowed down into the arena. His voice resembled the roar of a wounded beast and even overwhelmed the clamor of the crowd.

"You there, recruit! Scorchwind!"

He shouted the player's ID directly, his blood-red eyes fixed upon the momentarily stunned World Eater below.

"If you lose this fight just because one useless ornament changed sides and bring shame upon my World Eaters, then once this match is over, you will drag yourself to the Legion's dueling pit!"

"I'll personally teach you how to use an axe! Do you understand me?!"

The threat and brutality in that roar sent a shudder through [Scorchwind].

A personal challenge from his Primarch.

He immediately suppressed his anger at Rivane's betrayal and his shock at the sudden change in circumstances. Savage fighting spirit reignited in his eyes.

Losing to a Custodian might be understandable. But if he performed poorly enough to receive personal training from his Primarch afterward...

The thought alone was too terrifying to contemplate.

He growled, raised his chainaxe high, and locked his crimson gaze upon the golden and purple figures opposite him.

"Fine! Two against three, then! We'll still tear you apart and turn you into scrap! EndlessSpring! See You Tomorrow! Stop standing around! Attack!"

[EndlessSpring] of the Death Guard nodded silently and raised his heavy power scythe.

The psychic light around [See You Tomorrow]'s staff began to flow once more. His gaze remained calm, as though the sudden loss of an ally had not surprised him at all.

Or perhaps, in his calculations, every change had already been accounted for.
