[Earth-838. The Baxter Foundation. The Atrium.]
The building was a cathedral of science. White marble, living plants, and floating droids that hummed with silent efficiency.
"Halt," a voice boomed.
Doctor Strange and America Chavez turned. Standing behind them was Baron Mordo. Flanking him were six silver robots. They weren't the clunky Iron Legion. They were sleek, faceless, and glowing with orange energy.
Ultron Sentries.
"Stephen Strange," Mordo said, his voice dripping with disdain. "You are under arrest for crimes against the Multiverse."
"Mordo?" Strange frowned. "You have hair in this universe. And better posture."
"Seize them," Mordo ordered.
The Ultron bots grabbed Strange and America. Strange's magic was dampened by cuffs that snapped onto his wrists instantly.
Mordo looked around. "Where is the third one? The readings showed three biological entities."
He scanned the atrium. It was empty.
"Must have been a glitch," Mordo muttered. "Take them to the Tribunal."
[The Vents. 40th Floor.]
High above, clinging to the shadows of the ventilation shaft, Sebastian Michaelis watched them go.
He had erased his thermal signature. He had slowed his heartbeat to one beat per hour. To the sensors, he was just a pocket of cold air.
He didn't follow Strange. He followed the smell.
It was the scent of expensive cologne, motor oil, and absolute, terrified control. It was the scent of Tony Stark.
Sebastian slipped through a grate and dropped silently into a hallway.
[The Laboratory.]
He entered a room that looked less like a workshop and more like an operating theater. There were no grease stains. No classic rock playing. No scattered blueprints. Everything was white, sterile, and perfect.
In the center of the room stood a man.
He was looking at a hologram of the Multiverse. He wore a suit of armor that rippled like liquid mercury—the Endo-Sym Armor. It moved as if it were alive, breathing with him.
The faceplate retracted, dissolving into the collar.
It was Tony Stark.
But not his Tony. This Tony had sharper cheekbones. His eyes were a piercing, icy blue. He didn't look tired. He looked... manicured.
"You're not in the database," Superior Iron Man said without turning around.
Sebastian froze. He hadn't made a sound.
"Heartbeat: zero," Tony tapped the hologram. "Temperature: ambient. Biological composition: non-terrestrial. You're a demon."
He turned around. He held a glass of clear liquid (water, not whiskey).
"And you're wearing a tailcoat. How retro."
Sebastian stepped out of the shadows. He bowed, instinct taking over.
"Greetings, Sir. I am Sebastian Michaelis."
Tony paused. He tilted his head.
"Sebastian," Tony mused. "That was the name of my first JARVIS iteration. Before I deleted him."
"Deleted?" Sebastian asked, a chill running down his spine.
"He had too much personality," Tony took a sip of water. "He kept trying to argue with me about morality. Inefficient."
[The Job Offer]
Tony walked closer, the liquid armor shifting around his shoulders like a silver cape.
"You bypassed 400 localized sensors to get in here," Tony noted, impressed. "The Ultron bots are clumsy. They lack... nuance."
He looked Sebastian up and down.
"I could use something like you. A silent operator. Someone to clean up the messes the Illuminati are too 'heroic' to touch."
"You are offering me a job?" Sebastian asked.
"I'm offering you a purpose," Tony corrected. "Look around you, Demon. This world? It's paradise. No hunger. No war. No Thanos."
Tony gestured to a display case on the wall. Inside was a massive, purple helmet.
Thanos's helmet. Cracked down the middle.
"I killed him on Titan," Tony said simply. "I didn't wait for him to snap. I built a suit of armor around the world, and when he knocked, I answered."
He looked at Sebastian with intense, fanatical eyes.
"Join me. We can fix your broken Doctor. We can fix your messy universe. All it takes is the will to do what is necessary."
[The Cold Logic]
Sebastian looked at the helmet. He looked at the pristine lab. It was everything his Tony had ever wanted. A suit of armor around the world. Peace in our time.
"And the girl?" Sebastian asked softly. "America Chavez?"
Tony's expression didn't change. It remained perfectly smooth.
"The girl is a variable," Tony said. "An uncontrolled breach. She risks an Incursion. If two universes collide, trillions die."
"So?"
"So she has to be removed from the equation," Tony shrugged. "The calculus is simple. One life vs. two universes."
"She is a child," Sebastian stepped forward. "She is scared. She came to you for help."
"Children die every day," Tony's voice turned cold. metallic. "Or they used to. Before I stopped it. I made the hard call, Sebastian. That's what grown-ups do. We trade the one for the many."
Sebastian looked into this man's eyes.
He saw no guilt. No PTSD. No "Merchant of Death" shame.
He realized then what this Tony had done. He hadn't just removed the alcohol. He hadn't just removed the shrapnel.
He had removed his heart.
This wasn't Tony Stark. This was Ultron in a human skin.
[The Rejection]
Sebastian straightened his coat. He adjusted his gloves.
"My Master," Sebastian whispered, "was a mess. He drank too much. He listened to loud music. He made mistakes that cost lives."
Sebastian looked up, his eyes flashing fuchsia.
"But he had a heart. It was made of metal, yes... but it was warm."
He looked at the Superior Iron Man with profound pity.
"You, Sir... you have an engine. You run perfectly. But you are empty."
Tony's face hardened. The liquid armor began to crawl up his neck, forming a cowl.
"I have peace," Tony snarled.
"You have silence," Sebastian corrected.
"Get out of my lab," Tony ordered. The repulsors in his hands began to glow a menacing orange. "Before I dissect you to see what makes a demon tick."
Sebastian bowed.
"I shall show myself out. But be warned, Superior Iron Man..."
Sebastian faded into the shadows just as Tony fired a repulsor blast.
"...perfection is often just a fancy word for stagnation."
[The Escape]
Sebastian reappeared in the hallway. The alarm was blaring now.
He is going to kill them, Sebastian realized. He is going to kill the girl and the Doctor because the math says so.
He had to get to the Tribunal. He had to stop the Illuminati.
And he had to do it before the Scarlet Witch arrived. Because if this Tony Stark tried to fight Wanda Maximoff...
Sebastian shuddered.
He won't stand a chance.
