Chapter 75 - Chapter 75: The House Always Wins

[Stark Tower. The Boardroom. 6:01 AM.]

Pepper Potts stared at the steaming cup of French roast in front of her. She looked up at Sebastian Michaelis, who stood with his hands neatly folded behind his back, a picture of absolute, terrifying serenity.

"Proceed with the vote," the older board member, Sterling, cleared his throat. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out his encrypted StarkPad to review the morning's data.

Sebastian's fuchsia eyes flicked toward Sterling.

Sterling unlocked the pad. He opened the hidden folder where Sebastian Shaw usually deposited his daily reminder of blackmail—photos, offshore accounts, undeniable proof of Sterling's embezzlement.

The folder was empty.

Sterling blinked. He refreshed the network. 0 Bytes. He looked across the table. Two other board members were staring at their own devices, their faces pale, mouths slightly open. The chains were gone.

Sterling slowly looked up at the tall butler standing at the head of the table.

Sebastian offered him a polite, closed-mouth smile. It was a smile that promised absolute ruin if Sterling made the wrong choice.

"The motion on the floor," Sterling said, his voice suddenly much stronger, "is a vote of no confidence in CEO Pepper Potts. All in favor?"

Silence. Not a single hand was raised.

"All opposed?"

Twelve hands shot into the air.

Pepper let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. She slumped slightly in her chair, a genuine smile breaking across her tired face. Happy Hogan let out a loud, unprofessional whoop from the corner.

"The motion fails unanimously," Sterling announced, tossing his pad onto the table. "Stark Industries remains under the direction of Mrs. Potts. Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go change all my passwords."

Sebastian picked up his silver tray.

"A wise decision, gentlemen," Sebastian murmured. "The Master always despised a mutiny."

[The Hellfire Mansion. The VIP Lounge. 6:15 AM.]

The ringing of the encrypted phone shattered the quiet of the VIP lounge.

Sebastian Shaw snatched it off the table. He listened for exactly five seconds before his face turned a mottled, furious purple. He threw the phone against the mahogany wall, shattering it into plastic shrapnel.

"The vote failed," Shaw snarled, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Those cowards. Potts must have offered them a larger bribe."

Emma Frost sat on the leather sofa, her legs crossed, inspecting her manicured nails. "How unfortunate for you, Sebastian."

"It doesn't matter," Shaw marched over to his heavy, encrypted laptop. "I don't need the board. I have ten billion dollars in the Inner Circle liquid accounts. I'll launch a hostile buyout right now. I'll drown Stark Industries in litigation until they hand over Vault 4."

He typed in his master password.

A red error message flashed on the screen.

Transaction Denied. Insufficient Funds.

Shaw froze. He hit refresh. He checked the offshore routing numbers. He checked his personal Cayman accounts.

Balance: $0.00.

"Where is it?" Shaw whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, icy terror. "Where is my money?!"

"I believe," Emma said smoothly, picking up her empty champagne flute, "the Maria Stark Foundation for Orphaned Children just received the largest anonymous donation in human history. A very philanthropic gesture, Sebastian. The press will love you."

Shaw turned around. His eyes locked onto Emma. He realized she wasn't panicking. He remembered the tall, pale butler with the red eyes who had served the wine.

"You," Shaw's voice dropped to a lethal growl. His mutant power flared. He absorbed the ambient kinetic energy in the room—the sound waves, the heat, his own fury—his muscles bulging beneath his velvet jacket. "You and that English freak set me up."

"I am simply restructuring the club," Emma replied coldly.

Shaw roared. He lunged forward, throwing a punch packed with enough absorbed kinetic energy to shatter a bank vault. He aimed straight for Emma's face.

Emma didn't flinch.

In a heartbeat, her skin crystallized. The soft flesh and white fabric turned into flawless, indestructible organic diamond.

Shaw's fist connected with her diamond cheek.

CRACK.

It wasn't Emma who broke. Shaw screamed in agony as the bones in his hand and forearm shattered into dust against her impenetrable skin. The kinetic energy backfired, throwing him across the room. He crashed into the poker table, collapsing in a heap of splintered wood and broken pride.

Emma stood up. The diamond shifted back into soft skin and blonde hair. She walked over to the groaning Black King.

She knelt down, took his uninjured hand, and smoothly slid the heavy onyx Hellfire ring off his finger. She slipped it onto her own thumb.

"The King is dead," Emma whispered, looking down at him with absolute disdain. "Long live the White Queen."

[Stark Tower. Sub-basement Level 10. 7:00 AM.]

The elevator doors opened with a soft ding.

Pepper Potts stepped out into the pristine, heavily armored sub-basement. Sebastian followed close behind, his hands resting naturally at his sides.

"I don't know how you did it, Seb," Pepper said, walking toward a massive, circular blast door at the end of the hall. "But the board is terrified of you. And Shaw's company just filed for emergency bankruptcy."

"I merely balanced the books, Mrs. Stark," Sebastian replied modestly. "A butler must ensure the household accounts are in order."

Pepper smiled, scanning her retina on the security pad next to the blast door.

"Shaw wanted this room because the old board rumors said Tony was building weapons down here again," Pepper said. "World-killer stuff. Experimental repulsor tech. They thought Tony lied about leaving the weapons manufacturing business."

"And did he?" Sebastian asked softly.

"See for yourself."

The heavy vault doors hissed, gears grinding as they parted. A warm, brilliant blue light spilled out into the corridor.

Sebastian stepped into the room.

It wasn't a weapons cache. There were no missiles, no guns, no armor plating.

Instead, sitting in the center of the vast room, was a colossal, self-sustaining Arc Reactor. It was ten times the size of the one in the tower above. It hummed with a deep, resonant power, pulsing like a living heart.

"Vault 4," Pepper whispered, looking up at the glowing blue core. "It's a clean energy grid. Tony was designing it to power the entire eastern seaboard. Free, infinite, clean energy. He wanted to give it to the world before..."

She trailed off, her eyes watering.

Sebastian stood in the blue light. He felt the hum of the machine vibrating in his chest. It didn't smell like gunpowder or death. It smelled like ozone, innovation, and hope.

He remembered the Superior Iron Man in the other universe—a cold, empty shell who built a suit of armor out of fear and control.

Then he looked at this. A heart built to give warmth to millions.

This is the legacy, Sebastian thought, a rare feeling of genuine pride swelling within his demonic soul. This is why I served him.

Sebastian took a step forward. He placed his white-gloved hand over his own chest and bowed deeply, not to Pepper, but to the glowing blue light of the reactor.

"It is a masterpiece," Sebastian said, his voice thick with a reverence he reserved for very few things in the universe. "The Master's heart... is as brilliant as ever."

He straightened his coat, looking back at Pepper.

"Shall we go upstairs, Mrs. Stark? I believe it is time for breakfast. And I make an exceptional Eggs Florentine."

[End of Arc 12]
