Chapter 78 - Chapter 79: The Void in the Room

[New York City. Hell's Kitchen. Nelson, Murdock & Page Law Offices. Three Months Later.]

Matt Murdock sat behind his cluttered desk, his red-tinted glasses resting on his nose. The neighborhood outside was loud—sirens, arguments, the rumble of the subway—but Matt filtered it out. He focused on the sounds inside his office.

He heard the nervous, fluttering heartbeat of Foggy Nelson standing by the filing cabinet. He heard the steady, confident rhythm of Pepper Potts, CEO of Stark Industries, sitting in the leather chair opposite his desk.

And then... he focused on the corner of the room near the door.

Nothing.

Matt frowned slightly. He tilted his head, enhancing his hearing, pushing his radar sense into the corner.

He could smell Earl Grey tea, expensive wool, and a faint, metallic scent like a freshly struck match. He could feel the spatial displacement—someone was standing there. A tall man.

But there was no heartbeat.

There was no sound of breathing. No expansion of lungs. Even the fabric of the man's suit made absolutely no sound when he shifted his weight. To Matt's superhuman senses, the man in the corner wasn't a living being. He was a black hole. A walking, talking void.

What the hell is in my office? Matt thought, his grip tightening on his white cane.

[The Client]

"We appreciate you taking this meeting, Mr. Murdock," Pepper said, her voice smooth and professional. "I know Stark Industries usually uses a massive corporate firm, but we need someone who knows the streets. Someone who knows Wilson Fisk."

"Fisk is running for Mayor," Foggy chimed in, trying to sound brave. "He's untouchable right now. He's using eminent domain to bulldoze low-income housing and commercial properties for his 'New Hell's Kitchen' project."

"Including an old Stark R&D warehouse on 47th Street," Pepper nodded. "He's filed an injunction to seize it. We need you to block it in court. And we need you to do it quietly."

"We can file the paperwork, Mrs. Stark," Matt said, keeping his voice steady while his mind raced. "But taking on Fisk... it's dangerous. For you, and for us."

"I am aware," Pepper said. "Which is why I am not leaving you unprotected."

She gestured toward the corner of the room.

"This is Sebastian Michaelis," Pepper introduced him. "He is my... personal attaché. He will be acting as your driver and bodyguard for the duration of the trial."

[The Introduction]

"A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Murdock," a voice said from the void.

Matt flinched. The voice was impossibly smooth, cultured, and perfectly modulated. But the vocal cords... Matt couldn't hear the wet friction of a human throat. The sound just seemed to manifest in the air.

"I don't need a bodyguard, Mrs. Stark," Matt said quickly. "I'm perfectly capable of taking care of myself. I know the neighborhood."

"I insist," Pepper said firmly. "Fisk's men have a habit of making opposing counsel disappear. Sebastian will ensure you make it to the courthouse. He is very efficient."

"I assure you, Sir," Sebastian said, stepping forward. Matt felt the cold air move as the tall man approached the desk. "I will be as unobtrusive as a shadow."

Matt swallowed hard. He could smell the ozone now. The sulfur.

He's not human, the Daredevil part of Matt's brain screamed. He's a monster.

"Fine," Matt said, forcing a smile. "But I drive myself."

"As you wish," Sebastian replied. "Shall we proceed to the courthouse to file the injunction, Sir? The car is waiting."

[The Ride]

Ten minutes later, Matt and Sebastian were sitting in the back of a heavily armored Stark limousine, driven by a silent Stark security agent.

The divider window was up. The cabin was completely soundproof.

Matt sat stiffly on the leather seat, his hands resting on his cane. He could hear the engine, the tires on the asphalt, the driver's heartbeat.

But from the seat next to him... absolute, terrifying silence.

"You are very tense, Mr. Murdock," Sebastian observed quietly. "Your heart rate is currently resting at ninety-five beats per minute. An elevated state for a simple car ride."

Matt turned his head, aiming his red glasses at the spot where the voice originated.

"Cut the crap," Matt said, dropping his "helpless blind lawyer" persona. "I don't know what Pepper Potts thinks you are, but I know you're not a bodyguard."

"Oh?" Sebastian sounded amused. "And what do you think I am, Sir?"

"I don't hear a heartbeat," Matt said, his voice low and dangerous. "I don't hear you breathing. Your body temperature is exactly room temperature. You don't make a sound when you move. You're a walking corpse. Or something worse."

There was a pause. The silence stretched.

Then, Sebastian chuckled. It was a dark, rich sound that made the hairs on the back of Matt's neck stand up.

"A human lie-detector," Sebastian mused. "How utterly fascinating. The Master always did surround himself with exceptional individuals."

Matt gripped his cane, ready to deploy the billy club hidden inside it. "I'll ask you once. What are you?"

Sebastian leaned in closer. Matt could feel the cold radiating from him.

"I am a servant of the House of Stark, Mr. Murdock," Sebastian whispered. "And I am here to ensure that Mr. Fisk's lawyers do not breathe a word out of turn. But since you are a man of the cloth... or at least, a man who spends a great deal of time in confessionals..."

Sebastian's fuchsia eyes glowed in the dim cabin. Matt couldn't see the light, but he could feel the sudden, oppressive demonic energy saturate the air like a physical weight.

"Let us simply say," Sebastian smiled, his voice dropping into a register that vibrated Matt's bones, "that if the Devil of Hell's Kitchen ever needs a reference regarding the lower realms... he need only ask his driver."

Matt froze. The air smelled like fire and brimstone.

"We have arrived at the courthouse, Sir," Sebastian said cheerfully, the demonic pressure vanishing instantly. The door clicked open. "Allow me to assist you with the door. Watch your step."

Matt stepped out onto the pavement, his heart hammering in his chest.

He was Daredevil. The Man Without Fear.

But as the tall butler closed the car door behind him, Matt Murdock realized he was terrified.
