Chapter 8 - The Quiet Test

Chapter 8: The Quiet Test

The hospital room had returned to its normal rhythm.

But "normal" was only what people believed it was.

Machines continued to beep softly. Nurses moved in and out. Conversations resumed at a lower volume, as if nothing unusual had happened earlier.

Yet the air never fully returned to ease.

Something lingered.

Unspoken.

Unconfirmed.

And Vegeta still stood near the window.

Silent.

Thinking.

Watching.

Not relaxed.

Not distracted.

Simply present.

---

Inside the crib…

I could feel it again.

That focused attention.

Not random.

Not emotional.

Directed.

Vegeta was studying me again.

Carefully.

Like a problem that refused to fit into known categories.

I remained still.

Not because I lacked awareness.

But because there was no need to respond.

Revealing too much too early would be unnecessary.

Observation first.

Reaction later.

That was enough.

---

Vegeta finally moved.

Slow.

Controlled.

No sound of urgency.

No announcement.

Just footsteps across the clean hospital floor.

The room didn't immediately notice.

Only I did.

He stopped beside the crib.

His shadow fell over me slightly.

"…Hmph."

That sound again.

Always the same.

But the meaning had changed.

Less dismissive.

More focused.

---

Vegeta bent slightly.

He did not touch me.

He never did things carelessly.

Instead, his presence changed.

A subtle shift in energy.

Controlled Ki pressure.

Not aggressive.

Not dangerous.

But deliberate.

A test.

A question without words.

---

The atmosphere changed instantly.

The air felt heavier.

Not to everyone.

Only to those sensitive enough.

A few distant voices paused mid-sentence outside the room.

Even the medical equipment flickered slightly.

Bulma noticed first.

"…Vegeta?"

But he didn't answer.

His eyes stayed fixed on me.

---

I felt the pressure pass over me.

Like invisible weight pressing against awareness itself.

So this is his method.

Simple.

Direct.

No tools.

Just presence and control.

I understood immediately what he was looking for.

Reaction.

Instinct.

Fear.

Instability.

Anything that would confirm "normal infant behavior."

But I was not normal.

Still…

I chose restraint.

Not because I had to.

Because it was unnecessary to reveal anything yet.

---

The pressure increased slightly.

Still controlled.

Still measured.

Vegeta was adjusting.

Testing step by step.

Like refining a hypothesis.

The air grew heavier again.

But I did not move.

Not even a twitch.

Only awareness.

Stillness.

Perfect stillness.

---

Vegeta's eyes narrowed.

"…Tch."

A small sound.

Not irritation.

Assessment.

He increased it again.

Just a fraction.

Still not enough to harm.

But enough that even trained fighters would feel discomfort.

---

Outside the room, someone finally spoke.

"What is that pressure…?"

Another voice replied uncertainly.

"It's coming from inside…"

But no one entered.

No one interrupted.

Because the source was Vegeta.

And Vegeta did not explain himself.

---

Inside my mind, I observed everything clearly.

System interface flickered.

---

[NOTICE]

[EXTERNAL ENERGY SOURCE: VEGETA]

[PRESSURE TYPE: CONTROLLED KI PROBE]

[USER RESPONSE: NONE DETECTED]

---

Interesting.

Even system acknowledged it as "probe."

Not attack.

Not threat.

Observation.

Good classification.

---

Vegeta stopped increasing pressure.

A pause.

Then silence returned.

The air lightened again.

The room slowly returned to normal.

But Vegeta did not move away immediately.

He stayed there.

Looking.

Thinking.

---

"…No reaction," he muttered quietly.

He straightened.

Crossed his arms again.

But something had changed in him now.

Not visible.

Not dramatic.

Subtle.

Recalibration.

---

Behind him, Bulma finally spoke again.

"Okay, seriously… what was that?"

Vegeta didn't answer immediately.

Then:

"…Nothing important."

As always.

But this time, even he seemed less certain about his own answer.

---

I sensed something shift in the room.

Not in energy.

But perception.

The Z Fighters outside were still lingering.

Curiosity had not left them.

Piccolo's voice was faint but sharp.

"That child… is not normal."

Goku scratched his head.

"Maybe he just didn't notice?"

Piccolo responded instantly.

"No."

Simple.

Final.

No doubt.

---

Vegeta finally turned away.

But as he did, his eyes narrowed slightly one last time.

Not at the room.

Not at Bulma.

At me.

"…Hmph."

And then he left the immediate side of the crib.

But not the situation.

Not in his mind.

That had already been locked in.

---

Inside my thoughts, I closed my awareness slightly.

Not sleep.

Just control.

Everything was proceeding as expected.

Slowly.

Carefully.

The first step of awareness had already passed.

Now came the next phase.

Observation turning into attention.

And attention…

into change.

The system flickered once more.

---

[NOTICE]

[STATUS UPDATE: USER NOW UNDER EXTERNAL MONITORING]

[PROBABILITY OF FUTURE INTERACTION: INCREASED]

---

I didn't react.

There was no need.

Because now I understood something clearly.

This world had already started watching me.

And soon…

It would start responding.
