Chapter 21 - Chapter 21 : The Limits of Friendship (3)

### Morning — Round Two

The sun rose over the Grand Coliseum, painting the arena in shades of gold and crimson.

Sixteen competitors remained.

Five of them stood together at the competitor's entrance, waiting for the day to begin.

Ryo was, predictably, half-asleep against a wall.

Mochiko stretched, her phoenix mark already faintly glowing with anticipation.

Kagari stood close to Noah, their shoulders almost touching.

Sora observed the crowd, sharp eyes cataloging threats.

Leo was there too—eliminated, but unwilling to miss a moment. His notebook was already open.

"Today's matchups," Noah said quietly, unrolling the bracket.

**Second Round — S-Class Tournament**

- Match 1: Noah Reinhart vs. Kenta Fujimoto

- Match 2: Ryo Kazehaya vs. Mira Ashford

- Match 3: Mochiko Qiuyue vs. Taro Yamada

- Match 4: Kagari Hitsugi vs. Lin Wei

- Match 5: Sora Yamino vs. Kaelen Voss

- Match 6: Ren Takami vs. [Winner]

- Match 7-8: [Other matches]

Ryo opened one eye. "Mira Ashford. The creative fire mage."

"You've fought fire before," Mochiko said.

"Not like her. She's different."

Noah nodded slowly. "She doesn't follow patterns. That makes her dangerous."

"Good." Ryo closed his eye. "Boring fights are exhausting."

### Match 1 — Noah Reinhart vs. Kenta Fujimoto

The crowd buzzed with anticipation as Noah walked to the center of the arena.

Across from him, Kenta Fujimoto was lean and quick, with the restless energy of a wind mage. His feet barely seemed to touch the ground.

The proctor's voice: "Begin!"

Kenta exploded into motion—not toward Noah, but sideways, circling, creating distance. Wind gathered around him, ready to launch.

Noah didn't move.

*He's calculating,* Kenta thought. *Waiting for me to commit. Fine. I'll force him.*

"Wind Cutter!"

Blades of air shot toward Noah—three of them, angled to cut off escape.

Noah raised one hand. "Gravity Distortion."

The wind blades curved mid-flight, pulled off course by shifting gravity. They harmlessly struck the ground around him.

Kenta's eyes widened. "You can deflect—"

"Gravity Crush."

Weight slammed into Kenta mid-stride. He stumbled, fought to stay upright—

Noah was already moving. Ice formed at his fingertips. "Glacier Spear."

Three spikes flew. Kenta twisted, avoiding two, but the third caught his shoulder—not deep, but enough to stagger him.

*He's too strong,* Kenta realized. *I can't win trading spells.*

He changed tactics. Wind wrapped around his legs, propelling him forward at impossible speed. Close range. Disrupt the mage.

Noah saw it coming.

He drew his practice sword.

The crowd gasped—again. The Reinhart prince, mage and swordsman?

Kenta lunged. Noah sidestepped—calculated, precise—and brought his blade up. Not to strike, to parry. To control.

Then: "Gravity Crush. Point blank."

Kenta slammed into the ground, pinned, gasping. Noah's practice sword rested against his throat.

Silence.

Then the proctor: "Winner — Noah Reinhart!"

The crowd erupted.

Noah sheathed his sword, offered Kenta a hand, and walked off without looking back.

In the stands, Kaito watched with those cold, empty eyes.

*Still calculating,* he thought. *Still predictable. Good.*

### Match 2 — Ryo Kazehaya vs. Mira Ashford

Ryo ambled onto the arena floor like he was going for a stroll.

Mira Ashford met him at the center—fire mage, creative, unpredictable. She was grinning.

"I've been wanting to fight you," she said.

Ryo raised an eyebrow. "Why?"

"Because everyone says you're unbeatable. I want to see if that's true."

"It's not." He shrugged. "I'm very beatable. Just lazy."

Mira laughed. "I like you."

"Everyone does."

The proctor's voice: "Begin!"

Mira struck first—not with fire, but with a flash of light. A blinding burst, designed to disorient.

Ryo closed his eyes.

*Smart,* he thought. *But I fight with more than sight.*

He moved—not away, but toward. Phantom Step carried him forward, closing distance while Mira was still recovering from her own spell.

She sensed him coming. Fire erupted around her—a defensive ring, pushing him back.

Ryo leaped over it.

Mira's eyes widened. "What—"

His practice sword tapped her shoulder.

"Dead," he said cheerfully.

Mira stared at him. Then, slowly, she started laughing.

"You're impossible."

"So I've heard."

The proctor: "Winner — Ryo Kazehaya!"

Ryo offered her a hand, pulled her up. "Good fight. Creative opener. Almost got me."

"Almost?"

"I closed my eyes."

She stared at him. "You closed your eyes against a flashbang?"

"I sensed you instead. Works better."

Mira shook her head, still laughing. "You're insane."

"Probably."

He ambled off the arena floor.

### Quarterfinal Matchups

That evening, the new bracket was posted.

**Quarterfinals — S-Class Tournament**

- Match 1: Noah Reinhart vs. Takeshi Nomura (Earth knight, defensive specialist)

- Match 2: Ryo Kazehaya vs. Akio Tanaka (Speed fighter, dual daggers)

- Match 3: Mochiko Qiuyue vs. Yuki Harada (Water mage, control specialist)

- Match 4: Sora Yamino vs. Ren Takami (The match everyone wanted to see)

Kagari's name wasn't on the list.

She'd lost in the round of sixteen.

No one had seen it coming—least of all Kagari herself. Lin Wei's precision wind magic had been faster, sharper, more relentless than anyone anticipated. Kagari had fought well, but not well enough.

She sat on the balcony that night, staring at the stars, saying nothing.

Noah sat beside her. Closer than usual.

"You fought well," he said quietly.

"Not well enough."

"You'll have next year. More Stars to earn."

Kagari was silent for a long moment. Then: "I know. It just... hurts. Now."

Noah didn't have words for that. He wasn't good with feelings, with comfort, with any of it.

So he just sat there. Present. Quiet.

After a while, Kagari leaned against his shoulder—just slightly.

He didn't move.

### The Match Everyone Wanted

Sora vs. Ren Takami.

The undefeated martial artist against the flawless swordsman.

Everyone was talking about it. Even the upperclassmen. Even the faculty.

Sora showed no emotion when she saw the bracket. Just a slight nod. Acceptance.

Ren Takami, across the room, met her eyes. Held them.

Neither looked away.

Leo was taking furious notes. "This is going to be incredible. Speed versus precision. Unarmed versus blade. No one knows who'll win."

Mochiko watched Sora carefully. "She's not nervous."

"Sora's never nervous."

"No. She's focused. There's a difference."

Ryo, miraculously awake, studied Ren from across the room. "He's good. Really good. But Sora's different."

"Different how?"

"Hard to explain." He shrugged. "She fights like someone who's already lost everything. Nothing left to fear."

No one knew what to say to that.

### The Night Before Quarterfinals

The balcony was quieter than usual.

Four of them remained in the tournament: Noah, Ryo, Mochiko, Sora.

Two watched from the sidelines: Leo and Kagari.

Leo broke the silence. "Tomorrow, quarterfinals. Then semifinals. Then finals. Three fights in one day for the winners."

Mochiko nodded. "Endurance matters as much as skill."

Ryo yawned. "Good thing I conserve energy."

"You nap between fights?"

"If they let me."

Sora's voice came from the shadows: "Ren Takami. Tomorrow. I've been waiting for this."

No one doubted her.

Under the stars, six friends sat together—fighters and supporters, winners and losers, bound by something stronger than tournament results.

Tomorrow, the real battles began.
