**[Current Academic Marks: Oliver Rill: 4 | Leo Ashbourne: 4 | Elara Fenwick: 4 | Ilana Fenwick: 4]**
Four marks Each. From all four of their primary instructors. In one engagement.
Leo let out a low whistle, his merchant's mind instantly calculating the value. "Four marks. That's… that's a significant starting capital."
Ilana nodded, her eyes wide. "Grath's mark is particularly noteworthy. He rewards us for first combat engagement."
Oliver stared at the number '4' next to his name. For months, his only metrics had been failure to manifest and the scornful looks of others. These marks weren't for raw power; they were for *use*. His undefined grey mana had been a vital component in a successful whole. The validation was quiet but profound.
Elara whooped, forgetting her nausea. "We're on the board! Top of the Bronze class! Suck on that, Kaelan!"
As if summoned by the mention, a rustle in the foliage announced another group's arrival. It was Kaelan and two of his followers, looking slightly battered but purposeful. They stopped at the edge of the small clearing, their eyes taking in the charred spider carcass and the triumphant, group.
Kaelan's expression was unreadable for a moment, then settled into its usual arrogant mask. "Got lucky with a spider, I see." His eyes flicked to the fading notification lights on their wrists. "Marks for pest control. How… quaint."
Leo crossed his arms, his earlier contemplation gone, replaced by a cool defiance. "Efficient pest control. No bruises, no broken barriers. Just a plan and execution. You should try it sometime."
Kaelan's jaw tightened. The popping sounds around him intensified for a second. "We're hunting real prey. A Rockhide Boar. It's been trampling a sector we're trying to clear. Something with actual *consequence*." He gave Oliver a lingering, disdainful look. "Enjoy your fog and your… flowers."
He turned and led his group deeper into the forest, the sounds of their aggressive passage fading quickly.
The brief elation dimmed, replaced by a renewed sense of competition. The marks were a milestone, but Kaelan was right about one thing—this was just a spider. The forest, and the academy, held far greater challenges.
"A Rockhide Boar," Ilana murmured. "That's a significant step up in threat level. If they subdue it, they'll likely earn marks from Grath and Vex for environmental management."
Oliver nodded, looking from the dead spider to the dark path Kaelan had taken. Their first victory was real, but it was just an entry in a ledger. A ledger everyone was now fighting to top. He had four marks, a team that worked, and an affinity that was still a mystery. But for the first time, he also had proof—his way, the cooperative, analytical way, could yield results.
"Come on," he said, turning back toward the safe zone. "We need to log the encounter details with the Aegis console. And," he added, a hint of his old curiosity returning, "I want to study a sample of that shadow-web residue before it fully decays."
As they walked, the weight of the marks in their records was a new kind of fuel. They were no longer just trying to survive the year. They were starting to compete in it.
